Chapter 36
Once back at school, we went to our dorms and put our things away. I met Alice and Grace in the common area of the girls’ dorm.
Grace said, “I would like to hang with you guys. Looking back on my activities, I haven’t done well on my own.”
Alice said, “Grace, what do you mean? You’re welcome to hang with us though we’re pretty dull.” She smiled.
Grace gave a tremulous smile back “I’ve told you a bit about my past.” Alice and I nodded slowly. “I want to be different and that means not being with the people I used to hang with and being with people who follow my new lifestyle. Guys, I need good examples. Even if Mitch and I don’t work out, I needed to change. Good examples of a relationship are good for me. I need to be around good people to help me make the transition.”
Alice said, “We can do that. I think you and my brother have real possibilities but, even if it doesn’t work, you have needed a more healthy lifestyle from what you’ve said.”
“Yes, that’s very true. I’ll be around you and your friends a lot.”
“It’s no problem, Grace. Alice and I like you.”
Moments later, Marilyn and Bob came into the room and walked over to us. Marilyn looked serene. “I took Bob home over the weekend. We had fun.” She smiled. “Life is good.” Bob gave her a hug. They sat together on a love seat facing us.
Ten minutes later, it was time for supper and we went, in a group, to the cafeteria and got in line for supper. So started another week of college life.
Tuesday, my parents told me that they were coming for the weekend. Since it was my mother calling, I put Alice on who said she was looking forward to seeing her and Mister Short Friday. She said that Mom could help her cheer on their favorite quarterback.
Wednesday, Mitch called Grace while she was sitting with us. He planned on coming for the weekend. He wanted to stay with me if that would work. When she asked, I told her that would work or we would find a place for him. She smiled and told him that she expected him Friday. She was looking forward to his appearance. I talked to Joe who was going home with Barbara as had become their habit. From what he said, there was much to accomplish to get a place to live and to get married. While he didn’t know Mitch, he didn’t mind him using his bed while he was gone since Mitch was a friend of mine.
It’s Friday and people are expected. Mitch arrived first. Joe had left his meal ticket and key for Mitch, too. Grace engulfed him with an embrace and hard kiss. They both looked happy to see one another. My parents called and had checked in at the motel. Dad was buying supper and we were invited. I told them we would join them shortly.
I took Mitch up to my room with Grace and Alice in attendance. I told them that we would join my parents for supper and eventually return to the common room or our beds depending upon the hour. Everyone was good with that. Mitch would be able to eat in the cafeteria with Joe’s meal ticket.
We went down with them and left in my car leaving them in the common room.
I had been told their room number. I parked beside Dad’s car and we went to the door and knocked. Mom opened the door greeting us with hugs and kisses. She passed Alice to Dad. I gave him a hug after hugging Mom. We sat down together in the small sitting area of the room. My parents were excited to see both of us and each of us. I realized that my fair lady Alice was loved by them, too. That worked for me since I loved them and her.
We were all sitting in the sitting area of the room. Dad said, “We’re glad to see the star quarterback and his girl tonight. We plan to take you out tonight.” He looked over at Alice grinning. “You have taught him to use utensils by now?”
Alice grinned back. “Actually, he’s learned quite well. Unlike most football players, he’s teachable.” She leaned against me.
She said, “We’ll have some company tomorrow at the game. My brother, Mitchell, is here to see Grace. Jerry came up with a meal ticket and a room for him. He and Grace are becoming more emotional. I think that’s good.”
Mom said, “The ladies’ cheering section is becoming known more and more known. I heard it mentioned in passing in the grocery store. You know that, if the team continues to win, a game will be televised. I think they will show your group.”
Alice shrugged. “I hope to avoid the notoriety that one of the Alabama quarterback’s girl received if there are cameras. That would be embarrassing.”
I said, “He was a senior and she a model. We’re neither one.”
Dad said, “Son, you will have to be ready. Sooner or later, you or your friends on the team will be noticed. Winning does that.”
“Dad, I think this weekend will either make that a coming truth or quiet things. This will be our toughest opponent. They have a long history of winning in the conference.”
“Are they undefeated?’ Mom wanted to know.
“No, but their only loss was to a top five nationally ranked team.”
Alice said, “Jerry, I just don’t want you to get hurt.”
“I plan to try to avoid getting injured though all of us do that.”
Dad smiled. “Let’s go eat. We’ll be a little early and avoid the crowd.”
Mom nodded and stood. I stood and gently pulled fair Alice up and into my arms.
She smiled. “Thank you, Jerry.’
“You’re welcome, fair Galadriel.”
We followed Mom and Dad to his car. He drove us to a local steakhouse. We got out and went inside. It was early enough that we were seated with no waiting;. Our server was a college student.
He said, “You’re Short.” He looked at Alice. “You’re his girl who leads the cheering for the team. It’s an honor to serve you tonight.” He looked at Mom and Dad. “You must be one of set of parents. Which one?”
Mom grinned. “We’re Jerry’s parents though we like Alice very much.” Dad grinned and nodded. Mom continued, “We’re here for the game tomorrow.” After a half second pause, “We’re also here to spend time with Alice.’
“I appreciate the opportunity to serve you tonight. I’m Ron. I’ll be at the game, too.” He took our drink orders and departed leaving us to review the menus.
By the time he returned with our drinks, we were ready to order. He took my mother’s order and then moved to Alice. She ordered and then said, “Ron, come by the stands where I’ll be with Jerry’s parents. We would be glad to see you.”
“Thank you. I will plan on that.”
We sat back sipping our beverages until our salads were delivered. Dad prayed and then we ate. Our salads were good. All four of us liked blue cheese dressing which was quite good at this chain. We enjoyed our salads. Ron didn’t hurry us bringing out our appetizer just as we were finishing our salads. He placed it where we could all reach the two platters, one of fried onions and another of stuffed mushrooms. He left with our empty salad bowls.
