Valentine’s Day Flash

Sweethearts in high school, Cindy and Paul became long distance lovers in college. Separated by six hours of Interstate highway, they called each other every night.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, darling!”

“Oh, Paul, it’s so good to hear your voice. I miss you so much.”

“I miss you, too, Cindy. In fact, I missed you so much, I drove up to see you! I’m pulling into your parking lot right now.”

“You are? Holy Mackerel. That’s great ... except...”

“Except what, darling?”

“Except I missed you so much I drove down to see you!”

“Wow. That was so sweet of you. This shows we’re truly made for each other. We think alike.”

“Yeah. We must have passed each other. I’m so sorry.”

“At least I’ll be able to sleep in your bed. I still have your extra key from Christmas. My key is under the mat, so when you get there you can have my bed. Maybe we’ll have special dreams about each other.”

“No, Paul.”

“No what?”

“Don’t go in my apartment.”

“Why not?”

“Because I lent it to Cheryl and Dave. They live in the dorms with roommates, and I figured for Valentine’s Day...”

“That’s what I love about you. You’re so generous. Okay. I’ll just head back. I should be there by two a.m. I can’t wait to hold you in my arms.”

“Wait. I have an idea. Why don’t we meet halfway? We can get a motel in Claremont. That way we’ll be in each other’s arms even quicker, and still on Valentine’s day.”

“You’re so smart! But one thing puzzles me. Your car is still here in the parking lot.”

“Oh. Um. It wasn’t running well. Dave let me borrow his in exchange for the room.”

“You’re so resourceful, my darling! See you soon!”
