Alternate History:
After Gettysburg, the Confederates reeled south towards a flooded Potomac having suffered casualties of 1/3 their starting numbers. The Union forces staggered after them having suffered casualties of 1/4. In our history, Lee managed to escape to Richmond, but what if he hadn’t?
These stories postulate that he didn’t. Consequences include the early fall of Richmond and return of the Confederate capital to Montgomery, the early assassination of Lincoln, 5 years of President Hamlin supported by a Radical-Republican Congress, and a stronger Reconstruction with 40-acre grants to each male adult freedman.
