Chapter 7
After May supervised the departure of Denise and watched as she was ushered down to the parkade and into a van, she made her way back upstairs. As she approached Kevin’s desk, she spied a couple of females crowded around it. They must be new. Kevin, at nearly six foot and 180 pounds, had the rugged good looks that women seemed attracted to. However, he rebuffed all their advances, and some of them were quite bold, because he was gay with a boyfriend named Bobby.
When May reached the desk the women drifted away so her partner could examine the leather bomber jacket confiscated from Denise. She watched as Kevin searched through the two front pockets and the one inside before speaking.
“Anything?” May asked after Kevin was finished.
“Nothing in the pockets but there is this.” He pointed at the logo face up on the desk. “It may help us.”
May peered down at the crest containing the letters EHS on top of what looked like two swords crossed. On the bottom was the word hockey.
“Huh huh, school logo and I guess the owner of the coat plays hockey which fits in with Denise’s story about drugging somebody called The Coach. Now all we gotta do is figure out which school.”
“Already on it.”
Keven flipped open his lap top. The very action made May wince. Despite her partner’s assurance that it wasn’t some evil instrument of the devil, May remained unconvinced. She still hadn’t figured out whether or theory was true or not because she was so scared of computers she barely touched one. Her refusal to even make an attempt to try and learn its most basic functions was legendary in the office.
She could barely force herself to watch Kevin scroll through the emblems of all the city high schools. It was only when he stopped and pointed to something that she dared to look closer. Her partner pointed at the logo of the Evergreen High School Sabres.
“Looks the same to me, how about you?” Kevin asked.
May glanced down at the crest on the jacket and then back at the one on the computer before nodding in agreement.
“Now give me a moment and I’ll see if I can get a lead on the owner of this jacket. Since it’s made of fine leather and bears the crest of the high school, somebody may just think it’s valuable enough to warrant a lost notice.”
May warily eyed her partner as he began typing something on the keyboard.
“What’s that for?” She asked. “What are you doing now?”
“Checking out social media. It’s the way people communicate these days and if somebody lost a school jacket it just may be mentioned on something like Face Book or Twitter.” Kevin explained.
May nodded although she didn’t understand a thing her partner was saying.
“See,” Kevin announced after a few minutes of scrolling. “This jock from Ever Green High is complaining to his Face Book friends that he lost his school jacket at a wild weekend party that celebrated the Sabres winning a hockey cup.”
May blinked and frowned, wondering if her partner had performed some kind of magic trick right before her eyes. But, as she looked down at the lap top, she had to admit to herself, Kevin had found something interesting.
Does he mention his name?” May finally asked after staring dumbfounded at the lap top for a moment.
“Yup. Rory Michaels and he’s thoughtful enough to leave an email address so he can be contacted if somebody finds it. I guess that means us,” Kevin stated as he typed something else on his lap top.
