Chapter 15

When May and Kevin studied Ogilvie through the one way mirror they observed a very upset man. The lawyer, who was not cuffed, would pace frantically around the room like a trapped deer and then sit in a chair where he would drum his fingers on the table before getting up and resuming his pacing.

“Sure looks nervous to me,” May commented. “So maybe he knows the game is up. Otherwise why would we drag him all the way down town? Also, it must not have been a very pretty scene for him when the police escorted him out of his house in front of his wife and kids.”

“So know what? You think we should let him stew for another little bit?” Kevin asked.

“I think he’s pretty well softened up.” His partner replied.

“Yes, if you call looking like you’re ready to crap your pants mean softened up.” Kevin laughed.

“Let’s go then,” May announced as she pushed open the interview room.

Ogilvie turned towards the detectives at the sound of the door opening. They could see sweat on his forehead but they could see a look of bravado on his face.

So that’s how it’s gonna go. He’s gonna try a bluff so maybe we didn’t soften him up quite enough, May thought as she watched the lawyer prepare for battle.

“What is the meaning of this? Do you know how it looks to have the police march into my house unannounced and take me away in front of my family? Well, they acted like the god damned gestapo or something and you’ll all pay for this terrible embarrassment.” Ogilvie ranted.

“Why don’t you just can the histrionics so we can get down to business?” Kevin asked. His eyes bore into Ogilvie’s long enough to make his nervousness show again.

“What business? I have no idea of what you’re talking about. All I know is that I was enjoying a peaceful evening with my family when your police crash into my home like a gang of thugs.”

“Yes, it’s about the young woman you were asking about earlier,” May explained. “You know the one. You claimed she was a client of yours and had all kinds of documents to prove it. However, when she denied it, you skedaddled pretty quick. The next thing we know she gets shot right after we take her into a safe house. Now she’d dead. And guess what? We have the man who shot her in custody and he’s saying he got her address from you.”

Ogilvie paled and shifted uncomfortably in his chair at the accusations. His eyes flitted from May to Kevin then back again and he remained silent.

The detectives stayed mute as well because they wanted to keep the pressure on their suspect. May knew the tactic was working because she’d seen it all before. She could see the sweat break out on the man’s forehead again and watched the way he began licking and biting at his dry lips. She noticed his hands were under the table. No doubt they were held tightly together to stop from shaking which would betray his distress.

“Who did you give her address too?” Kevin demanded in a loud voice. “Don’t you know I set you up by deliberating leaving her address and name uncovered and you took the bait, didn’t you? We think right after you left you relayed the address to somebody who ordered a hit on her. Unfortunately we didn’t prepare ourselves quick enough and now she’s dead. So I’d say we have you dead to rights for assisting a murder which means in the eyes of the law you are guilty as the shooter.”
