Chapter 3
“Beloved family and friends, we’re gathered here together in the sight of God, on this absolutely glorious sunny day, to witness the union of Bradley Daniel Hayward and Abigail Maryanne Kendall to become husband and wife. I first met Brad and Abby on the day of her car accident. I’m sure you’ve all heard how he sacrificed his future sports career in hockey to save the life of his then-girlfriend with a liver donor transplant. Their love has grown, and now they’re committed to becoming husband and wife for their remaining days. I have officiated at hundreds of weddings over my years in the priesthood, none more special to me than this one, today.”
“Like Brad and Abby, I have seen heavenly sights not many live to remember, namely the Susej Tree,” Father Williams began. Those not close to the family wondered what he was talking about.
As he spoke, Brad and Abby looked at each other, gripping their hands tighter. He was awestruck by her stunning beauty, dressed in white silk and satin. He noticed the veil on her head, highlighting five rings of hair. She wore the slightest amount of makeup that highlighted her natural beauty.
Her wedding dress hugged her young curves, the front plunging low between her breasts, accented by the necklaces from her mom and Cathleen. It flowed out from her waist, lightly covering the floor. She wore delicately woven lace sleeves from her elbows to her hands.
Abby’s stare locked on this handsome young man, whom she loved with all her heart, wearing a formal tuxedo, accented by his boutonniere, a white rose.
“It is unusual for the parents of Abby and Brad to be very good friends, which brings closer the meaning of their joining together. They are not very religious, though, and we do all pray from time to time, for whatever reason. Abby and Brad don’t want a long, drawn-out ceremony, so we’ll commence.”
“It is customary to ask those in attendance: Is there anyone who objects to Brad and Abby joining as husband and wife? Speak now or forever hold your peace,” Father Williams stated. After a moment of silence, he grinned, “I didn’t think so.”
“Brad, you may go first.”
He turned to face the woman of his life. “Today, I promise you this. I will laugh with you in times of joy and comfort you in times of sorrow. I will share in your dreams and support you as you strive to achieve your goals. I will listen to you with compassion and understanding, and speak to you with encouragement. Together, let us build a home filled with learning, laughter, love, and children, shared freely with all who may be there. You said to me that as we grow older, our marriage will evolve with the passing decades into one with lifelong memories. Let us be partners, friends, and lovers today and all of the days that follow.”
“The ring, please,” Father Williams asked. Jake placed Abby’s ring on the open Bible, and the Father blessed it. Brad picked up the ring and held Abby’s hand. It felt cool, a little wet, and slightly shaking. He kissed the diamond ring, Abby looking at it inches away from her left finger, then at her true love.
“Brad, please repeat after me. You are more precious to me than yesterday.”
“You are more precious to me than yesterday.”
“And you will be more cherished tomorrow than you are today.”
“And you will be more cherished tomorrow than you are today.”
