Prologue: The End of the Old Life
Hello, my name is Luke, well it used to be, it’s now Paula. I bet you are wondering why two names? Well it started in the year 2020. Covid-19 was running amok, Kobe Bryant, Little Richard, and many other celebrities had died, and murder hornets (although that did not become a thing). I was on my deathbed having contracted Covid. My body was shutting down, the last thing I remember was the pretty nurse calling for a crash cart, wishing not to die, but falling into the void called death.
Forty-three, I was Forty-three years old and I died on my birthday. I was heading home from my weekend job to relax when the symptoms started to show their ugly head. The next day I was hit hard, coughing, high fever, body aches, headache, the works. I called 9-1-1 when I started having trouble breathing and passed out as the next thing I remember I was in the hospital with a pretty nurse checking my vitals.
As I said, I was coming back from my second job, My primary job was a professional gamer. Some might consider this career not a real job but I made real money from it. From 9 in the morning to 9 at night I would practice, or stream on YouBook or FaceTube. Admittedly my streaming donations were starting to stall due to Covid. I barely made rent and bills and took up a job on the weekends to make ends meet. Probably where I got this damned illness, someone not wearing a mask interacting with me. I was a clean freak during this outbreak, wearing a mask every time I had to go out. Hand sanitizer with me whenever I went out. Even a little do-hicky to open doors with so I didn’t have to touch the handles.
“It’s not fair!” I shouted into the void, no longer in the hospital, but in limbo.
“Who said life was fair?” A soft voice whispered.
“What? Who said that?” I looked around for who said that.
“I did” I looked around and saw her, a young girl maybe 13. “I just turned 13. I was at my birthday party, I was swimming, then ... then...” She started to tear up. I went over and held her as she sniffled and cried for a few minutes.
