SUSAN
ring, ring
“Huh? What’s that?” I thought.
ring, ring
Ugh. My phone. Who could it be? I was still half asleep.
ring, ring
Hey, what time is it? Two AM? Someone calling at this time? This better be good.
“Hello?”
“Sue, it’s Emily. I’m so sorry to wake you.”
“Emily?”
“Yes, Emily. I need your help.”
“Mine? Why?”
“It’s Jay.”
“What about him?”
“I think he needs to go home.”
“I’m sure he’s home now.”
“No, he’s not. He’s at Addison’s party.”
“Addison? The cheerleader?”
“Yeah, it’s one of those parties.”
“Oh. And Jay is there?”
“Yes.”
“What’s he doing there?”
“Being taken advantage of.”
“Are you sure?”
“I was there.”
“What about now?”
“I had to leave.”
“Why?”
“You’re not going to like this.”
“There’s a lot of things about today that I don’t like, one of them being woken up in the middle of the night.”
“I caught him in bed with Addison.”
“Addison? You’re kidding. Are you sure they weren’t just ... I don’t know, snuggling or something?”
“They weren’t snuggling, Sue. I saw it with my own eyes.”
“What exactly were they doing?”
“They were fucking like bunnies.”
“Fuckin’ figures.”
“Yeah. I’m sorry. I know how you feel.”
“What do you want me to do about it?”
“Someone needs to take him home.”
“I can’t take him home.”
“One of my friends called me from the party after I left. She thinks Jay is in trouble.”
“What kind of trouble?”
“They’re taking advantage of him, Sue.”
“Why don’t you call his mom?”
“I don’t know her number or I would have. Maybe you can get in touch with her.”
“Fine.”
“I hope he’s okay.”
“How can you say that after he screwed Addison?”
“He’s so little, Sue. I’m sure Addison was taking advantage of him but I couldn’t just hang around. I was too ... angry, I suppose.”
“Alright, I’ll call his mother.”
“Thanks, Sue.”
“I hope Jay’s mother appreciates this.”
“I’m sure she will.”
Jay at a cheerleader party? I’ve heard of those wild parties. I wasn’t too sure about this. I really should call his mommy though, so I laid down in bed holding the phone and asked it to call Ms. McMillan. However, before I could finish another call came in. Two calls at this time of night. This one better be good.
“Hi Sue, it’s Madison. I hope I didn’t wake you.”
“Somebody else already did. What is it?”
“Oh, were you sleeping?”
“I was, but I’m up now.”
“It’s about Jay.”
“Don’t tell me: you’re at the party.”
“How did you know?”
“Let’s say a little birdie told me.”
“You better get down here real quick, Sue.”
“Oh no. I’m not baby-sitting that little runt.”
“SUE! This is Jay we’re talking about. He needs you.”
“He needs to go home. I was about to call his mother just now.”
“I don’t think that’s the best thing to do.”
“Why not?”
“He needs to sober up first.”
“He’s drunk?”
“Drunk as a skunk.”
“Oh this I gotta see.”
“Do you know where Addison lives?”
“That was just a saying. I’m not coming to get him.”
“Sue, they’re hurting Jay. They’re making him...”
“What?”
“With all the sex that’s going on I don’t feel right about Jay. He’s so innocent.”
“Not as innocent as he has us all believe.”
“So you’re just going to leave him to the lions?”
“The lions?”
“All the girls that are here.”
“What’s he doing with them?”
“What do you think?”
“So they’re getting a taste of Jay, huh?”
“I’d say he’s getting a taste, literally, of all of them.”
“I don’t have a car or even a license, Madison. There’s no way I could come to his rescue anyway.”
“But you’re his partner.”
“Our Program week is over.”
“Not until Monday morning.”
“Being his partner doesn’t extend outside school.”
“But this is a school related function.”
“A party?”
“It’s the school’s cheerleading squad celebration.”
“You’re really pushing the limits here, Madison.”
“Fine. I’ll take him home myself.”
“Aaaaaa! I can’t believe this. Let me see what I can do first, okay? I’ll call you back.”
“Thanks, Sue.”
I got two calls about Jay in the span of five minutes. I hope I don’t get another one. Of course as soon as I get off the phone with Madison I get a text from Brenda.
Sue, if you’re up might want see if you can get in touch with Jay.
I texted back ‘why?’.
Chrissy called from partee at Addisons. Sounded stinking drunk. Just like her.
“So?” I texted.
J’s there.
I texted that I’d be taking care of it.
As much as I hated what Jay had done I couldn’t ignore him if he needed my help. Surely it would be right if his mother dealt with this, but what would happen if she caught him drunk? He’d be in major trouble, that’s what. Maybe I should check it out. I’d have to get Mommy up though. I didn’t want to but perhaps she’ll know what to do. Fortunately, I was able to get her up without waking Daddy, thank goodness.
“Mommy, I need our help.”
“What’s wrong, pumpkin?”
“It’s Jay. He’s at Addison’s party.”
“Who’s Addison?”
“She’s a cheerleader. The captain of the squad.”
“Okay.”
“Don’t you get it?”
“No.”
“It’s a cheerleader party.”
“I’m sorry, dear. I was never a cheerleader.”
“I forgot, you went to school in the dark ages.”
“Susan! That’s not fair.”
“I’m sorry, Mommy. I’m worried about Jay. Their parties are really wild. There’s booze and drugs and loose women there.”
“Loose women. Oh dear.”
“Don’t call his mother.”
“Why not?”
“He’ll get into trouble.”
“I figured he was already in trouble.”
“A lot more if she found out. This would be piling it on that much more.”
“She’ll find out one way or another. What do you propose?”
“I don’t know. I was hoping you’d help me. You always know what to do.”
“No, pumpkin, I don’t. But we’ll think of something. Do you know where this party is?”
“Yes, Mommy. Can we go? I need to see him.”
Here take the keys and warm up the car. Let me get ready. I’ll be out in five minutes.
I directed Mommy to Addison’s house and cars were parked all up and down the street. I had Mommy stay in the car while it was parked in the street.
“If you don’t mind staying here I’ll go in and get Jay. I shouldn’t be too long.”
“Take all the time you need, Sue.”
When I walked in there was loud music playing and everyone was sitting around talking. Nobody even said hello. I looked around for someone I knew well. Riley! Only Riley was lying passed out and nude on a chair. I was going to wake her when Madison found me.
“Oh good, Sue, you’re here. I was going to bring Jay home myself if you hadn’t shown up.”
“Why would you do that?”
