Chapter 15
We left in my car. Morgan directed me to a nice restaurant and we had a drink before going to the dining area and having a great meal.
On the way to the hotel, her phone rang. It was the hospital. Susan had left! We went to the hospital to get the details and determine what should be done by us, if anything.
I turned out that she used a shift change to leave her room. Going to an employee changing room, she found clothing and shoes that fit. After that, she simply walked out. I wasn’t impressed with their security but she wasn’t in a secured location because she wasn’t under arrest or considered a flight risk. Her identification and money were in the room. She couldn’t have taken them without raising an alarm. The employee area used a locked area for valuables. One cleaning employee admitted she had left a ten-dollar bill in the pocket of her, now, missing slacks.
Morgan and I left figuring she had walked to the nearest bar. We got in my car and that’s where we headed. There was a nice one with a restaurant and then there was a seedier one. We picked the one we figured she would choose. It had an original name, “Joe’s Bar and Grill.” I wasn’t sure there was much grill.
We went inside. There was a group sitting and standing around a table plus a couple of other men sitting at the bar. It wasn’t a place that I would choose for anything much less to bring my fiancé.
Morgan held onto my arm as we walked in. She was looking around concernedly. I was also. We saw the center of attention of the group and her mother at the same time. Her mother was drinking and was also topless. We went to a table out of the way.
“Morgan, we aren’t going to be able to stop this without help. I hate to say it but we should call the cops or get out. If we really interfere, we will have trouble.”
“I know, Evan. I want to make one attempt to get her out of here though I doubt I will be successful.” I nodded and gave her hand a squeeze.
We stood and walked toward the table together holding hands. Morgan said, “Hello, Mother. I see you’ve started back. We’re leaving. If you survive this night, don’t call. I’m moving my license elsewhere as well.”
She looked at her mother who at least looked embarrassed. She didn’t attempt to rise. They looked at each other for a long moment. Morgan said, “Good bye, Mother. Good luck in your new life.” She turned away. We walked out with me watching our backs. Two men began to walk toward us.
I stopped and turned to face them with Morgan between me and the door. “Gentlemen, we’re leaving. If someone tries to stop us, there will be problems.”
One of them said, “Yeah, and they will be your problems.”
I responded, “Possibly.
“Morgan, back toward the door. Call 9-1-1 if they won’t let us out.”
“You’ve got her mother. You’ll just have to be satisfied with her. Morgan is not available. We’re leaving.”
I backed toward the door and Morgan went out. Still watching, I followed her. No one went after us. I reached into my pocket and pulled the keys and unlocked my car with the fob. We got inside it. I quickly backed out of the parking place and left.
“Evan, I hate it but I’m going to cut ties with my mother. I don’t want to associate with her while she is playing with strange men. I suspect she will wind up back in the hospital soon. I had already talked to the broker in the office about being under her license rather than mother’s. She was about to terminate the agreement with mother anyway. Mother has four agents under her license. Only two of us are active. Fred is planning to leave her also. I’m going to make it happen Monday.”
I pulled up at the hotel and we went inside and to our room. Once there, I pulled her into my arms and just held her comforting her. I knew she was right in what she would do but that didn’t mean the action would be without emotional cost. After a while, we changed into our sleeping clothes and crawled into bed. I kissed and held Morgan through the night. As always, it felt delightful. We woke holding each other tightly.
We cleaned up and went into the restaurant for breakfast. We were dressed and went on to Sunday school and church. It was a good lesson and then service. We left for lunch and then went to our new home. We didn’t do anything but look. Monday would see the carpet installed and then I would have my furniture moved in and placed. We went by Susan’s to check mail and determine if she had been there. The house seemed to be undisturbed. Susan wasn’t there.
We left and stopped for supper before returning to the hotel. We went inside and changed clothes to our sleeping togs. We crawled into bed together.
In the morning, we got out of bed, cleaned up, and left to start our days. We ate breakfast together in the restaurant at the hotel. We left for our offices. I would meet Morgan for lunch and then drive to the house to meet the carpet people to get the new carpet installed.
At lunch, Morgan told me that she and her mother’s other agent who was active talked with the broker. She agreed to put their licenses with her directly. Her mother came in just before lunch looking terrible. The primary broker went into her office and told her mother that she only had two agents left and that they weren’t active. The primary broker terminated their relationship for cause and told Susan to pack her stuff and leave. Morgan said that Susan was troubled but was in her office, now her former office, packing her things. Morgan had left to meet me for lunch. She said, “Evan, I have an appointment away from the office at four to show two houses. I will stay with you until time to meet my clients if that’s okay with you.”
“Of course, it is. I’m off the rest of the day and will meet the carpet installers and watch over the installation at our new house. I will have the furniture delivered Saturday and the same two guys are going to help move it inside and place it.”
We finished eating and left for the house. We let the carpet guys through the gate. They came in and started to work after going over the work to be done with me. They went to it and seemed to know what they were doing quite well.
It took them almost two hours to finish including their clean-up. They even vacuumed the newly carpeted floors! Once finished, I had to sign that I approved and they left. I was impressed. They performed well and left the place immaculate.
Morgan said, “When is the furniture due along with your helpers?”
“Everything hits on Saturday. I figure to be finished and be sleeping here Saturday night.”
She grinned, “We’ll be sleeping here Saturday night. Evan, I like sleeping with you even though that’s all we’re doing.”
I smiled and kissed her.
At that moment, Morgan’s phone rang. It was the local hospital calling to report that her mother had been admitted after being transported from a motel room. She had been gang banged again perhaps by even more men this time. She had also been beaten. They recognized that she had skipped out last time. She was considered a real danger to herself now and would be held in a confinement ward. Morgan was given the information about where she was going to be located this time and when she could visit. Morgan thanked the person calling. I had been listening since Morgan had put the phone on speaker. She thumbed the phone to off.
