My daughter and my son were always close, but I never realized how close until I came home early one evening and found them in my son’s bedroom, lying naked in each other’s arms, sound asleep. Yes, I was shocked at this unexpected turn of events in our house. But as I watched my very contented sixteen-year-old daughter sleeping in the arms of my barely a year into puberty fourteen-year-old son, I could not really blame them.

My son Todd is outgoing and always full of fun. On the other hand, my daughter Rose is introverted and painfully shy around boys except for her brother. When it was just the two of them together, it was all laughs and teasing. She holds her head up, and her eyes sparkle. I would sometimes catch Rose hugging and kissing her brother when she thought I was not looking. Rose comes out of her shell when she is with Todd. If Todd has friends over, Rose retreats to her room with barely a nod to acknowledge them and keeps her eyes down whenever she must walk by them. “I’m sorry, Mom. It was my fault. I made him do it. Don’t punish Todd. Please, Mom. He doesn’t even have to know you caught us. We don’t do everything grown-ups do. We just...”

I sat on the edge of Rose’s bed and held her hand, “It’s okay, Honey. I know you love your brother, and he is the only boy you are comfortable being with. You’re both at that curious age, so I can’t say I am that surprised. I won’t say anything to Todd if you don’t want me to, but you and I need to talk.”

“I know, Mom. I won’t ever do it again. I promise.”

“Don’t make promises you will not be able to keep. As soon as I’m out of the house, the two of you will want to do it again. I know you, Rose. You will not do anything to disappoint your brother or make him unhappy. So you will do it again despite anything I say on the subject, even if it means you will get in trouble for it.”

Rose didn’t answer me. She just looked away, knowing that what I said was true, “Rose, you need to tell me what you have been doing with your brother. Please, don’t lie to me. This is important.”

I heard Rose sniffle. “We take all our clothes off, and I let him touch me. He likes when I touch him. Then we kiss and cuddle and rub each other down there. Honest, that’s all we do.”

“Rose, I’m not going to say anything to Todd about what I saw tonight. But I want you to be careful. Don’t let anyone know what you do with your brother. And for god’s sake, don’t let him put his penis in you.”

“So it’s okay if we do it again now that you know?”

“Yes, but no fucking.”

Finally, Rose smiled, “Mom, you said fucking.”

“Yes, Honey, I did, and you better not be.”

“We won’t, Mom, I promise.”

How could I deny my daughter a little comfort from her brother? I was not any better. I was younger than Rose when my cousin took my cherry, and I was not one bit sorry about it. It wasn’t long before Todd turned his head and kissed his sister. They no longer cared if I saw them kissing before they went up to Todd’s bedroom to cuddle and masturbate each other. They went back to kissing. Todd had moved his hand away from his sister’s breast. I reached between them and unbuttoned the top button on Rose’s pajama top. Then another and another.

Rose stopped kissing her brother and looked at me. “Mom?”

“It’s okay, Rose. I know Todd touches you, and it’s okay.” I undid the last two buttons and exposed Rose’s budding A-cup breasts. “Go ahead, Todd. I know Rose likes it when you touch her.”

Todd seemed reluctant to touch Rose as he asked his sister, “Maybe we should go upstairs, Rose?”

“No. I guess not. Mom has seen you touch me before but is she going to touch me down there too?”
