Chapter 11
"Umh, Six?"
"Yeah?"
"The cat," I was nervous about this, "Umh, Pyewacket?"
"Yeah?"
"She says," I said ... just to clarify that this isn't my idea, "She says you can fix her eyes..."
He held up a hand, "Let me guess. So she can see in color?"
"Huh?"
"That's what they all ask for," he said, "Sure. Pyewacket?"
Yes, my Lord?, she said.
Pyewacket actually bowed. Groveled, really. She raised her haunches and lowered her front to the ground. Tail tucked between her legs she inched forward until she was close.
I was amazed. I have never seen a cat abase themselves ... cats are haughty, aloof, proud, arrogant, vain, conceited, snobbish, superior, self-important, pompous, supercilious, condescending, patronizing; scornful, contemptuous, disdainful; stuck-up, snooty, hoity-toity, uppity, high and mighty, and la-di-da!
La-di-da? Never have I even considered that. But ... it certainly fits. Cats condescend to allow humans to live with them.
Six said, "I see you know who I am."
Yes, my Lord.
"So ... you want to see in color." Not a question. A simple statement of fact.
Pyewacket doesn't even know what color is ... she only knows she can't see it and ... That ... is unacceptable.
Yes, my Lord. Please.
Another shocking event. Cats don't beg. Dogs beg ... cats finagle. The world has tilted from 23 degrees to 25 and is coming to an end.
"Good Lord, Pyewacket ... where's your dignity?" I said.
Shut up, you.
"If I give you color, I have to change your eyes." He pointed at me. "Your eyes will look like his."
"Round?" asked Pyewacket.
"Yes, and ice blue ... just like his."
You might as well go the whole way and make me human.
"You'd love that, wouldn't you, Pyewacket. Back in your real body? Released from Pharaohs Curse? Sorry, kid. I'm not ready for that."
"So ... wait a minute ... the tales are true?" I said. "She's really a witch?"
"He. He was the most powerful mage of all time."
