As we came out of the Portal to greet the people waiting for us, I was telling Eric “Communication and co-operation. We made that one look easy because earlier people took the effort to tell us what problems they had, and we took the time to talk it over and work together to create a solution to all those problems. That’s our advantage in there, communication and co-operation.”
We didn’t get any further in that conversation, because Matt’s parents, Nell, and Jim and Rick were there to greet us. Rick had his camera up to catch us just as we appeared. We were tired and dirty, but Eric didn’t even ask Cindy for a ‘Bless’ this time. We didn’t need it. We were fine.
Nell gave Cindy and me hugs, but not as nice as I’d like. That would have to wait until later. They could do their best to kill me tonight. I would happily cooperate. Or, no, we had training down in Birmingham.
“Everybody, before we scatter, please remember that Mr. Jeffreys is running another training session down in Birmingham tomorrow, so don’t celebrate too hard tonight!” Yep, I saw Nell’s pout.
Jim wanted to be reassured that we were all fine. Eric had to make a speech while Rick recorded it. Eric made the point that I’d just made, that aside from how long it took we had a relatively easy time, because of two factors. First, we worked together very well. Since our first dive we never got surprised again no matter what our opponents did.
Second, previous divers here had left accounts of what they had done, what worked, and what didn’t work. We were able to use that knowledge to make a plan that worked. None of us were hurt. We might be tired because it was a lot of work, but otherwise we were fine. We owed a lot to those people who had gone before us.
After Eric was done with his speech, he said he needed to talk to Jim and our team. We’d be back with our families in just a minute.
Eric grabbed Jim and led him back into the trees away from everyone else. The rest of Team Newbie followed them. When he stopped he waved us all to move in, then he started talking to Jim.
“We may have a problem. Tell me if I’m wrong, here. This Portal has been here since they first arrived. It wasn’t found until later, but it’s been here for a year and a half. Last March, it probably didn’t do anything because someone had been in it already. However, five months ago, on August first, EVERY PORTAL IN THE WORLD spit out a dozen or so of its boss monsters. Where did the ones from this Portal go?”
“I’m willing to listen to someone explain how they were wiped out and the bodies all carefully counted by passing turkey hunters. If we can’t establish that, though, we need to track them down and wipe them out before they have 30 babies and start spreading out. We don’t need a colony of Giant Rats here in the Wheeler Refuge, where there’s no one except hikers, fishermen, and poachers.”
Jim nodded and said “I’ll try to find out. That’s all I can say right now.”
Eric said “Okay.” What else was he going to say? ‘That’s not good enough! Tell me now!’? No, if Jim didn’t know then he didn’t know.
And that reminded me of the “Gadsden Green”, a portal somewhere in north Gadsden that hadn’t been found yet. We knew the rough area, because it had spewed out two a bunch of goblins -the shorter less-scary version of orcs- twice. Both times they had rampaged through the neighborhood until they were all killed, and they’d killed a lot of retired people and housewives and children before they were wiped out.
I was thinking that, on the night of February 29th, Team Newbie was going to be hanging out in that neighborhood about midnight to see where they came from and see if we could kill them all before they caused any trouble. We all lived in the Gadsden area! It was sort of a public service!
We went back to everyone else, gathered up our stuff, and got back in the cars. When we got back to the Visitors’ Center, we all stopped and went in. I stayed out of Cindy’s way as she ran for the bathroom. Margie followed her. Had they been holding it all day? I certainly hadn’t. I’d watered more than one tree while we built the raft. The rest of the team -with Jim and Rick- went over to the help desk.
Since I’d talked to them before, I said “All done, it’s safe for a couple of months now.”
Jim asked “Who monitors that Portal at night?”
The guy behind the desk said “We have a motion-detector alarm here, and we can view the cameras. We saw you walk by with the canoe earlier, then bring it back. Is it back in the shed?”
I said “Yes, and the two paddles are back where we found them.”
“Good. Now, is there anything else I can help you with? I’m glad you all made it out safely. It didn’t look like anyone was hurt.”
Eric said “No, we’re all fine. But, we have questions about last August first. Do you have tapes of what happened at midnight on the night of July 31st?”
“No, there are no tapes. We didn’t get funding to install that stuff until after August first.”
“So, we have no idea what happened at that Portal that night?”
The man shook his head. “Nope. No one was there. No one was here. We all go home every night when we close the Center.”
Eric said “Fuck”, very loudly and very clearly. I think everyone else on the team nodded in agreement. Then, he turned to Jim. “Jim, I don’t think we need to panic, it’s January and they are probably holed up somewhere for the winter, but we have got to find them before spring. How fast do rats breed?”
Jim nodded. “I agree. I’ll call Mr. Smith.”
Matt had his phone out. “Normal rats have a three-week gestation period, 20 to 23 days. Giant Rats are probably slower, but they’ve had five months now. That colony is going to be huge.”
Eric said “Yeah, but we’re on Earth. We get to use shotguns. Napalm. Grenades. Flamethrowers. Machine guns. A-10s. Us grunts don’t go in until the artillery and the air strikes are done. We just do mop-up. Yeah, and we have to find them first.”
I had to point out the obvious. It’s one of my many valuable skills. “It may be a good thing that Matt and I didn’t try to land on that island. It would have been real exciting, for a few seconds.”
Matt nodded at me. “Word, man. Word.”
Eric said “Yeah, that’s the FIRST place we look. But, I think we want to call out the National Guard and surround that island first. Maybe lob a couple of high-explosive 105mm artillery rounds in there, before anyone goes in. And make sure the Guards actually fire at anything that moves. We don’t want any to get away!”
Then he nodded. “Yeah, I’m not in command, here. I don’t WANT to be in command, I’m not qualified. But, I want to be reassured that competent personnel ARE in command.”
Jim said “All six of you may well get hired as consultants.” He shrugged. “Or, they may decide they don’t need amateur help.”
Matt suggested “Maybe send a drone in there before we call the Army?”
Eric agreed. “Yes, that might be a good idea.” He turned to the Forestry Service guy. “Do y’all have any drones?”
“We don’t here, but I can get someone with a drone here if we need it.”
Eric turned to Jim. “Can ALPRA make that a formal request for assistance?”
Jim turned to the Service guy. “ALPRA would like the Forestry Service to investigate rumors of a monster colony on Rat Island. If you send us a bill, we’ll pay it.”
“And you are?”
“Jim Milton. Here’s my card. I am authorized to contract for services when time is short and it involves Portal Outbreaks.”
“That should be good enough. Can I call this number when we get the drone?”
“Yes, please. We need to know one way or the other as quickly as possible.”
“If the guy is available, he should be here tomorrow. I’ll let you know.”
“Thank you.”
We all thanked him for his hospitality and help, and hit the road. Well, Eric and Matt’s dad turned right, to go back south. Nell turned left, towards Decatur for the hotel. Shower, dinner, and all night in a hotel room with Cindy and Nell!
