Chapter 25: No Boys Allowed

Adrian and Georgina descended the stairs towards the Slytherin dungeons hand in hand. Georgina was still having difficulty believing what had happened. She had a boyfriend. An actual boyfriend. Adrian Selwyn, whom she’d known for nearly six years, who had apparently fancied her for more than a year without daring to say anything, had kissed her, held her, and asked her to be his girlfriend. And she’d said yes. Several times, in fact, and rather loudly. She glanced at him. He smiled.

“What?”

Georgina shook her head.

“Nothing.”

“You’re doing it again.”

“Doing what?”

“Smiling at me.”

She grinned.

“Get used to it.”

“I intend to.”

They reached the last flight of stairs and turned into the familiar stone corridor leading towards the Slytherin common room. Georgina was just considering whether she could persuade Adrian to give her one more kiss before they went inside when two boys emerged from a side passage. Marcus Flintley and Theodore Nott. They stopped directly in front of the couple. Adrian blinked.

“Marcus?”

Marcus folded his arms.

“Selwyn.”

Adrian glanced at Theodore.

“Nott.”

Theodore nodded solemnly.

“Selwyn.”

Georgina looked between them.

“What the bloody hell is this?”

Marcus sighed.

“Sorry, Georgie. Orders.”

“Orders?”

Theodore nodded towards the common-room entrance.

“The girls have taken over.”

Georgina stared.

“What?”

“The common room,” Marcus explained. “They’ve commandeered the whole bloody place.”

Adrian frowned.

“Why?”

Marcus looked at Georgina. Then at Adrian. Then back at Georgina.

“Take a wild guess.”

Georgina closed her eyes.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake.”

Adrian looked amused.

“Let me guess. Draconia?”

“Malfoy and Crabbe,” Theodore confirmed. “Joint command.”

Georgina groaned.

“Of course.”

Marcus continued.

“They started gathering girls about an hour ago. Then Malfoy announced that the common room was required for a private function.”

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

“A private function?”

Theodore nodded.

“Female attendance only.”

Georgina laughed.

“Oh, those absolute bitches.”

Marcus looked faintly aggrieved.

“They threw us out.”

Adrian laughed.

“Seriously?”

“Every last one of us,” Theodore said. “Even the first-years.”

Georgina stared.

“The first-years?”

Marcus nodded.

“Apparently they were considered a security risk.”

She laughed harder.

“Oh, Merlin.”

“Some of them didn’t even know what was happening,” Theodore added. “One poor little sod was halfway through his homework.”

Adrian shook his head.

“And nobody objected?”

Marcus gave him a flat look.

“Have you ever tried arguing with Draconia Malfoy when she’s organised something?”

“No.”

“Exactly.”

Georgina wiped tears of laughter from her eyes.

“So what are you two doing here?”

Marcus gestured towards Adrian.

“Collecting him.”

Adrian blinked.

“Collecting me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because,” Theodore explained patiently, “the girls want Georgina, and they don’t want you.”

Adrian looked at Georgina. She looked back. Then both began laughing. Marcus sighed.

“Look, it’s not personal.”

“Of course not,” Adrian said.

“They’ve got questions.”

Georgina grinned.

“Oh, I bet they bloody have.”

Marcus glanced at their joined hands. Then raised an eyebrow.

“Well, well.”

Adrian looked down. Georgina followed his gaze. Neither released the other’s hand. Marcus smiled slowly.

“Interesting.”

Georgina narrowed her eyes.

“Don’t start.”

“I haven’t said anything.”

“You’re thinking it.”

“Am I?”

“Yes.”

Theodore looked at Adrian.

“Come on. We’ve been told to make sure you don’t get inside.”

Adrian laughed.

“By whom?”

“Crabbe.”

“Oh, Vic.”

Marcus nodded.

“She was quite specific.”

“What did she say?” Georgina asked.

Theodore hesitated. Marcus sighed.

“Something along the lines of, ‘If Selwyn comes through that door before we’ve finished with Georgie, I’ll personally throw him into the lake.’”

Georgina burst out laughing.

“That’s my girl!”

Adrian looked mildly alarmed.

“She wasn’t serious, was she?”

Georgina grinned.

“Probably not.”

“Probably?”

She patted his arm.

“Don’t worry. She likes you.”

Marcus laughed.

“Imagine what she’d do if she didn’t.”

Theodore glanced towards the entrance.

“We really should get moving.”

Georgina looked at Adrian. Her smile softened.

“Well, boyfriend.”

Marcus went very still. Theodore blinked. Adrian smiled.

“Yes, girlfriend?”

Marcus’s mouth fell open.

“Hang on.”

Georgina turned towards him.

“What?”

Marcus stared.

“Did you just call him your boyfriend?”

Georgina grinned.

“Yes.”

Theodore looked at Adrian.

“Selwyn?”

“Yes.”

Marcus looked between them. Then let out a long breath.

“Bloody hell.”

“What?”

Marcus shook his head.

“Nothing. Just...”

He smiled ruefully.

“Congratulations.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Thanks, Marcus.”

Marcus nodded. Then turned to Georgina.

“Seriously. I’m happy for you.”

Her expression softened.

“Thanks.”

He smiled.

“He’s a decent bloke.”

Georgina squeezed Adrian’s hand.

“I know.”

Theodore shook his head in amazement.

“One date.”

Adrian smiled.

“One very good date.”

Georgina laughed.

“The best.”

Marcus looked at Theodore.

“Oh, the girls are going to lose their bloody minds.”

Georgina grinned.

“That’s what I’m counting on.”

Adrian turned towards her.

“I suppose this is where we part company.”

Georgina sighed dramatically.

“Apparently.”

He smiled.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”

She nodded.

“Breakfast?”

“Of course.”

For a moment, they stood looking at each other. Then Georgina glanced at Marcus and Theodore.

“Turn around.”

Marcus blinked.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

Theodore raised an eyebrow.

“Why?”

Georgina gave them a look.

“Because I’d like to say goodbye to my boyfriend without an audience of two bloody idiots.”

Marcus grinned.

“Oh, this should be good.”

“Marcus.”

“All right, all right.”

He turned around. Theodore followed, although neither made much effort to conceal his amusement. Georgina faced Adrian. He was smiling.

“Subtle,” he murmured.

She grinned.

“Never claimed to be.”

Then she slipped her arms around his shoulders. Adrian placed his hands gently at her waist. Georgina leaned down and kissed him. It was a warm, lingering kiss, and when they separated, she was smiling so broadly that Adrian couldn’t help smiling too.

“Goodnight,” she whispered.

“Goodnight, Georgina.”

She kissed him once more, quickly. Then stepped back.

“Go on. Before Vic comes looking for us.”

Adrian laughed.

“Good idea.”

Marcus turned around.

“Finished?”

Georgina glared.

“Unfortunately.”

“Come on, Selwyn.”

Adrian reluctantly released Georgina’s hand. Then he looked back at her.

“Until tomorrow?”

“Until tomorrow.”

Marcus and Theodore began escorting him away. After a few steps, Adrian turned. Georgina was still watching. He raised a hand. She blew him a kiss. Marcus groaned.

“Oh, Merlin. He’s going to be insufferable.”

“Probably.”

“Get used to it!”

She watched the three boys disappear around the corner. Then she stood alone in the corridor for a moment. Her smile softened. She looked down at her hand, remembering how Adrian had kissed it in the tearoom. Then touched her lips. My boyfriend. She laughed quietly.

“Bloody hell.”

From somewhere behind her, a familiar cold voice spoke.

“Miss Goyle.”

Georgina turned. The Bloody Baron was drifting silently along the corridor, his silver bloodstains gleaming in the torchlight. She straightened instinctively.

“Evening, Baron.”

He regarded her solemnly.

“I understand the common room has been requisitioned.”

Georgina winced.

“Sorry about that.”

The ghost’s expression remained unreadable.

“Miss Malfoy informed me that an important matter concerning the welfare of Slytherin House required immediate attention.”

Georgina closed her eyes.

“Oh, she bloody didn’t.”

“She did.”

The Baron paused.

“She also requested that I discourage unnecessary interruptions.”

Georgina stared at him.

“You agreed?”

He inclined his head.

“The affairs of the House must occasionally take precedence over ordinary arrangements.”

For a moment, Georgina simply looked at him. Then she began laughing. The Baron watched her with grave disapproval.

“Miss Goyle.”

“Sorry, Baron.”

She tried to stop. Failed. The ghost sighed.

“Young people.”

Then he drifted through the wall. Georgina approached the entrance to the common room. She could hear voices on the other side. Female voices. Quite a lot of them. Laughter. Someone calling for more tea. And, unmistakably, Victoria Crabbe’s voice.

“—and if she doesn’t tell us everything, I’m going to—”

“Victoria,” came Draconia’s cool reply, “do try to exercise a little patience.”

Georgina grinned. Oh, you two. She knew exactly what awaited her. Questions. Teasing. An interrogation that would probably last until midnight. And she had news that would make every girl in that room scream. She smoothed her blouse, adjusted her skirt, and took a deep breath. Then she gave the password. The stone entrance opened. Georgina Goyle stepped into the Slytherin common room. And every girl in the room turned to look at her.

The common room was packed. Armchairs had been arranged in a broad semicircle around the fireplace, the sofas were occupied, and several younger girls sat on cushions on the floor. A large table was covered with tea, biscuits, chocolates, and enough refreshments to sustain a prolonged interrogation.

There wasn’t a boy in sight. At the centre of the gathering sat Draconia Malfoy, looking thoroughly pleased with herself. Beside her was Victoria Crabbe, who broke into an enormous grin.

“GEORGIE!”

Georgina laughed.

“Oh, you absolute bitches.”

The room erupted in laughter.

“Good evening, darling,” Draconia said pleasantly.

“Evening, Draco.”

“Did you have a nice afternoon?”

Georgina folded her arms and surveyed the gathering.

“Well, well. This looks familiar.”

“Doesn’t it?”

“Same chairs. Same table. Same bloody audience.”

“More or less,” Draconia agreed.

Georgina looked towards the refreshments.

“Better biscuits this time, though.”

A seventh-year girl laughed.

“We made sure.”

“Very thoughtful of you.”

Georgina turned back to her friends.

“Only last Saturday, I was sitting over there helping you two interrogate Vic. Now you’ve decided it’s my turn.”

Victoria laughed.

“Fair’s fair, Georgie.”

“Oh, I know.”

Georgina grinned.

“Believe me, I’ve been expecting this all bloody afternoon.”

“Then I trust you’ve prepared your answers.”

“Some of them.”

“Only some?”

Georgina’s smile became positively wicked.

“Well, I wouldn’t want to spoil all the surprises.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“Georgie.”

“What?”

“You’re hiding something.”

“Already? I haven’t even taken my coat off!”

Victoria sprang up and hurried towards her.

“Come here, you daft cow.”

She threw her arms around Georgina, who hugged her back warmly.

“Hello, Vic.”

Victoria drew back and examined her face. Then her grin softened.

“Oh, Georgie.”

“What?”

“You look so happy.”

Georgina smiled.

“I am.”

“Really?”

Georgina nodded.

“Really, Vic. I had a wonderful time.”

Victoria hugged her again.

“Bloody brilliant.”

Draconia rose and joined them, embracing Georgina more gently.

“I’m glad, darling.”

“Thanks, Draco.”

For a moment, the three friends stood together, smiling. Then Georgina looked towards the waiting armchair.

“Right, then.”

Victoria blinked.

“What?”

“Let’s get this bloody interrogation started.”

The girls cheered. Draconia laughed.

“Such admirable cooperation.”

“Don’t get used to it.”

Georgina removed her coat, handed it to Victoria, and marched towards the armchair with the air of someone voluntarily presenting herself before a tribunal. She sat down, crossed her legs, and accepted a cup of tea. Then she looked around the semicircle.

“All right, ladies. Who wants to know what?”

Every hand in the room shot up. Georgina laughed.

“Oh, fuck. This is going to take all night.”

Victoria settled into the chair beside her.

“We’ve got all night.”

Draconia resumed her place opposite.

“Then let us begin.”

Georgina took a leisurely sip of tea. She knew exactly what was coming. After all, she’d helped organise Victoria’s interrogation the previous Saturday, and she’d enjoyed every minute of it. Tonight, she was willing to endure the same treatment. In fact, she was looking forward to it. Because she had something wonderful to tell them. And she intended to enjoy every second of their reactions.

“First question,” Victoria announced. “Did you have a good time?”

Georgina stared at her.

“That’s your first question?”

“Yes.”

“Vic, I walked in here smiling like a bloody idiot. What do you think?”

The girls laughed. Victoria grinned.

“I want to hear you say it.”

Georgina leaned back in her chair, cradling her cup of tea.

“All right. I had a wonderful time. Absolutely wonderful. Best Saturday I’ve ever had.”

Victoria’s expression softened.

“Really?”

“Really.”

Draconia smiled.

“Excellent. Now perhaps we can proceed to the interesting details.”

“Such as?” Georgina asked innocently.

“Where you went, what you did, what you talked about, and whether Mr Selwyn behaved himself.”

Georgina burst out laughing.

“He behaved beautifully.”

“Did he?” Draconia asked.
