“Derek! You’re here!”

Carly nearly knocked over her coffee when she saw him walk into Acme Storage Center.

“Well, hey doll. You called and I’m here.”

Carly blushed. “That’s not why you’re here. I called you almost ten times last year. You never returned my calls.”

“Well ... been busy, doll. Miss me?”

“Yes!” She caught herself and laughed. “I mean, your unit’s almost in default. Mr. Henderson was going to auction your stuff. Thank god you at least got that call.”

“Wouldn’t want that.”

“Where have you been? Florida? You said something about Florida last time.”

“Here and there.”

“Doing what?”

He raised an eyebrow.

Carly blushed. “Sorry. None of my business.”

She laughed, a little too loudly.

Derek leaned against the counter and looked her over. “You look good, Carly. You been working out or something? Your tits look delicious. So does your ass.”

Carly giggled, her face turning beet red. “Oh! Stop it!”

“That’s not appropriate conversation, sir.”

Derek looked up. A man was looking at him angrily. He dismissed the man without a second thought.

“Kevin, don’t talk to our customers like that,” Carly snapped.

“What he said was inappropriate. You can file for sexual harassment if you want. I’ll back you up. I heard everything.”

“Oh, get lost, Kevin. I know how to handle myself.”

Kevin didn’t know what to say.

Derek chuckled. “He got a crush on you or somethin’, doll?”

Carly grimaced. “He’s a pest. Don’t worry about him. He’s not important.”

Derek rolled his eyes. “As if a cockroach like him could do anything to me.”

Carly smoothed her hair. “Yeah. You’re something, Derek. Say, you got time to meet up for a coffee after this?”

Derek snorted. “Got work, doll. You know how it is.”

Carly’s smile faded. “Yeah. I get it.”

She sighed. She couldn’t figure out why she wanted to go out with this man. His jacket was worn, his jeans needed washing, and he hadn’t shaved in days. Carly’s mother would have taken one look at him and dragged her away by the ear.

God, she’d missed that smile.

Kevin appeared from the back office with a stack of invoices. “Carly, Mr. Henderson needs these checked. I was wondering if you’d like to have lunch with me?”

“Oh.” She glanced at Derek. “Can we do it another day? Sorry. I’m kind of busy.”

Kevin’s smile faltered as he looked at the otherwise empty office.

“Right.”

Derek watched him for a moment and smirked. “He’s trying pretty hard, isn’t he? You about to step out on me, doll?”

Carly laughed. “God, no! It’s not like that. He’s just Kevin.”

Derek grinned when Kevin’s shoulders sagged. “Trying too hard for this sexy fox, aren’t you, buddy? She’s out of your league, you know.”

Carly giggled like a schoolgirl. “Oh, stop it, you!”

Kevin stared at him and then went back into the office.

Derek watched him leave, an amused little smirk on his face. “Seems like a nice guy.”

“He is.” Carly shrugged. “Just not my type. Too predictable, you know. The boring type.”

Derek chuckled.

She felt her cheeks warming again. “So! Your account. You owe a hundred and eighty-six dollars.”

“Holy shit! For that little unit?”

“You have a ton of late fees. I managed to get Mr. Henderson to hold off on the auction, you know. We usually don’t keep units that are in default open for so long.”

“Did you, now? And why’d you do that for me, doll?”

“Well, you know ... you’re a long time customer. We need to take special care of them.”

Derek smirked. “Oh really?”

She nodded eagerly. “And I told him you’d be back and settle everything.”

Derek studied her for a moment. “That was sweet of you. You sure you can’t do anything else for me, doll? Money’s a bit tight at the moment.”

Carly thought about it. “I could make that invoice seem like a mistake in the system. I’ll make Kevin help me. He’ll do anything I say.”

“Attagirl, Carly. That’s the girl I know. Not just a fox but also devious like a snake. I owe you one.”

Carly beamed. “Don’t worry about the bill, Derek. I’ll take care of it. You’re safe for another few months.”

“My hero.”

She giggled. “Oh, stop.”

“Listen, I need to grab something from my unit.”

“Of course! Take your time.”

Carly hesitated. “So ... are you back in Atlanta?”

She smiled nervously. “I mean, it’ll be nice seeing you around.”

“Maybe you’ll see more of me.”

Her eyes widened. “Really?”

“That depends on whether you behave yourself, doll.” He winked at her. “I usually like the ones that don’t.”

Carly burst out laughing. “Derek! You’re too much.”

He turned and started toward the storage units.

“Hey!” she called. “Maybe we could get a drink on Friday? I’m off at six.”

“Busy Friday.”

“Oh. Saturday?”

He considered her for a moment. “Tell you what. I’ll think about it.”

Carly smiled. “Okay! I’ll wait for your call.”

He disappeared down the corridor with a nod. Carly stood grinning at the empty doorway.

“Seriously?”

When she turned, Kevin was standing beside the counter, looking hurt.

“That guy?”

“What’s wrong with him?”

“Nothing, apparently.” Kevin shook his head. “He looks like trouble, Carly. He’s a bum. I know guys like him. They’re dangerous.”

“Are you trying to tell me I’m an idiot? That I can’t figure out who I can and cannot talk to?”

“Carly, that’s not what I meant. Please...”

She rolled her eyes. “You’re just jealous of him because I don’t want to go on a date with you.”

Kevin walked away, looking sad.

The smile disappeared from Derek’s face before he reached the first row of units. “Fucking idiot.”

He shook his head.

Shame this act doesn’t work half as well on men, he thought bitterly. Would make everything so much simpler. Girls were easy. At least this one called before his lease ran out ... and before he lost his most prized possessions.

He stopped in front of his unit, keyed the lock, and rolled the metal door up with a loud rattle that echoed through the empty corridor. Inside, the air hung thick with dust, old paper, and something faintly sour.

He stepped in, waited for the single bulb overhead to stop flickering, then pulled the door halfway down behind him.

The space was nearly bare. Just a folding chair, a cheap table, and the box. It sat farther back, smaller and cleaner than the rest, positioned with deliberate care.

A flicker of satisfaction cut through the tension when he saw it still untouched.
