Prologue: The Reinforcements Arrive

Robert Wilkinson was not a man who was easily impressed.

It was part of his job not to be.

He was the man who came up with new shows to air. The tactical brain behind three television series currently running on traditional networks, two more exclusive to streaming services, and five older shows still producing healthy residual checks for Wilkinson Productions.

He had seen brilliant pitches turn into garbage.

He had seen terrible pitches somehow become hits.

He had seen talented people implode, mediocre people stumble into success, and executives spend obscene amounts of money chasing the latest trend six months after everyone else had already found it.

It took a lot to impress Robert Wilkinson.

He was impressed.

The whole thing had started as a favor for one of his top producers. The man’s kid was apparently a huge fan of esports.

Wilkinson knew enough about esports to know that they were growing faster than some traditional sports. Beyond that, his knowledge had been limited.

The producer had pitched it as a webseries.

Nothing expensive. Nothing ambitious.

A few episodes. A few minutes apiece. Cameras following a new semi-professional World of WarMachines team around as they prepared for competition.

Something they could put online to remind people that Wilkinson Productions was still creating new material between major releases.

Wilkinson hadn’t seen much money in it.

But keeping one of his best producers happy was worth the comparatively small expense.

So he had made a deal with an agent.

The agent had access to a new esports team. They were willing to let cameras in. No carefully controlled interviews. No public-relations people hovering over every conversation. The cameras could simply record them and see what happened.

If they got something useful out of it, great.

If they didn’t, Wilkinson could always hand the footage over to some second-string writers and editors and tell them, “Try to make this funny, if you can.”

Then his producer sent him the footage.

The writers didn’t need to make it funny.

It was already hilarious.

Wilkinson had spent most of an afternoon watching increasingly ridiculous moments play out on his office screen.

The team bickered.

They joked.

They screwed things up.

They recovered.

They reacted to situations in ways no writer would dare put into a first draft because someone would complain it was too contrived.

And somehow, they were actually good at what they did.

That was the important part.

It would have been easy to make a comedy about a terrible esports team.

This wasn’t that.

These were talented people who took what they did seriously, surrounded by personalities and situations that refused to cooperate with anyone’s desire for dignity.

Wilkinson leaned back in his chair.

It was like The Office, but about esports.

Not literally. He didn’t need another mockumentary.

But the lesson was the same.

You didn’t have to make the sport the story.

You made the people the story.

The competition gave them something to care about. Something to fight over. Something that put them under pressure.

Then you watched what happened to them.

These people had flaws.

They had personalities.

They were real.

Most importantly, they were just weird enough that professional writers could exaggerate them slightly and produce great television.

Wilkinson wanted this.

Now.
