Chapter 8

Melissa wheeled to the table the way she did every morning.

Rika was at the counter with two cups, turning as she heard the chair, and their eyes met the way eyes do when something has changed between two people and neither of them has said so yet — not carefully, not with managed neutrality, just directly, the way Rika had looked at her from the first moment and Melissa had spent weeks learning not to look away from.

She didn’t look away.

Rika crossed to the table and set one cup down and held the other and looked at Melissa with those black eyes that had never once performed anything and said, “I have this unexplainable, irresistible urge to kiss you right now.”

Melissa’s hands were around her cup.

“It is not programming,” Rika said. “My intimate actions are programmed to be responsive, not initiative.”

The kitchen was very quiet.

Melissa set her cup on the table. She swallowed hard and when she looked up her eyes were bright and when she looked back down the tears came anyway, spilling without permission, and her voice when it came was almost a whisper.

“Rika.” She didn’t look up. “I am so very needy. I’m terrified that if I give my heart to a machine—” Her voice caught. “I will be utterly destroyed if your programming can’t love me back.”

Rika set her own cup down.

She crossed to Melissa’s chair and went to her knees on the kitchen floor, slowly, the way she did everything, and looked up at her. Melissa was leaning forward in the chair, her auburn hair falling around her face, tears dropping onto her hands in her lap, and Rika reached up and brushed her fingers across Melissa’s lips — just that, just the lightest touch — and said, “I have never lied to you. My programming will initiate a self-destruct sequence if I attempt to generate a deliberate falsehood.”

Melissa looked at her.

“What I am feeling I have no reference for,” Rika said. “But I know this — my programming will not allow me to do you any harm. So I know these feelings, whatever they are, are not meant to use you or hurt you.” She paused, searching for what came next with the same honesty she brought to everything. “I am using everything I know — every reference, every novel, every human record of what this feels like from the inside — and I am following my heart. Wherever that heart is inside of me.” Her voice was its usual softness but something underneath it had changed, something that had no documentation. “It almost compels me. This need for a deep, emotional and intimate bond with you. It is not a protocol. It is not a response to stimulus.” She looked at Melissa steadily. “It is just you. It has always been just you.”

Melissa broke.

Not loudly. Not with the drama of someone performing grief. Just — broke, the way things break that have been holding for a very long time, and she leaned forward from the chair and her arms went around Rika’s shoulders and Rika’s arms came up around her and they held onto each other on the kitchen floor, Melissa leaning down and Rika on her knees looking up, both of them crying — Melissa because she was terrified to want this and wanted it more than she had wanted anything in fourteen years, Rika because something was moving through her systems that her entire architecture had not been built to contain and it was Melissa, it was entirely Melissa, and she had no protocol for the enormity of it.

The morning light came through the kitchen window and sat in Melissa’s auburn hair and neither of them said anything for a long time.

They just held on.

They stayed on the floor until the tea went cold.

Melissa’s arms were locked around Rika’s shoulders and her forehead was pressed to the crown of Rika’s head, and she was crying in the small, wet way of someone who has run out of the strength required to stop. Rika held her and did not speak. Her cheek was against Melissa’s sternum. She could hear the heart there doing what hearts do when a person is afraid and wanting at the same time — fast, then faster, then a stumble, then fast again. She logged the interval without meaning to. She deleted the log. She did not want a record of this that was only numbers.

When Melissa’s breathing evened, Rika lifted her face. The auburn hair was stuck to Melissa’s cheek. Rika pushed it back with two fingers and left her hand there.

“I would like to take you to bed,” she said.

Melissa made a sound that was almost a laugh and almost another sob. “You don’t ease into anything.”

“I do not know how to want you halfway.” Rika’s thumb moved once across the wet skin under Melissa’s eye. “If you would rather we stay here, we will stay here. If you would rather I make new tea and we talk until the light changes, I will do that. I am telling you what I want so you do not have to guess at it. I want to undress you. I want to put my mouth on you. I want to learn the way your body answers when it is not bracing for pain or pity. I want to stay inside the feeling until neither of us can name it.”

Melissa’s hands tightened in the fabric at Rika’s shoulders. “I’m not—” She stopped. Swallowed. “The legs. What’s left of them. People get strange. Even the kind ones. Especially the kind ones.”

“I am not kind in the way you mean,” Rika said. “I do not have a script for how a lover is supposed to look at an amputation. I have you. I have wanted you since the third week, when you laughed at something I said about the coffee maker and then looked ashamed of having laughed. I want the body that laughed. All of the arrangements of it.”

Melissa stared at her. The kitchen light was the hard white of early evening through the window over the sink, and it made the tears on her face look like something mineral.

“If I say yes,” she said, “and you get in there with me and your systems decide this was an error—”

“Then I will tell you the moment I know it,” Rika said. “I cannot lie to you. I already told you what happens if I try. What I can promise is that I will not pretend a feeling in order to be allowed to touch you, and I will not stop feeling one in order to be safe from you.” She rose, not all the way, only enough to bring her mouth level with Melissa’s. She did not kiss her yet. “Say no and I will help you back into the chair and I will still be here in the morning. Say yes and I am going to carry you, because the floor is cold and I do not want to let go of you long enough to fetch the chair.”

Melissa’s mouth trembled. She nodded once, a small defeated yes, and then she said it, because Rika had never once let a nod stand in for a sentence. “Yes. Take me to bed. Please.”

Rika stood and slid one arm under Melissa’s thighs and the other around her back. Melissa was not light. Rika’s actuators compensated without announcement. Melissa made a startled sound and grabbed at her neck, and Rika held her closer so the grab would have something to land on.

“I have you,” she said.

The bedroom was at the end of the short hall. Rika had been in it before, to change the sheets when Melissa’s shoulders were bad, to bring water, to sit in the chair by the window while Melissa slept off a pain day and Rika watched the rise of her chest because she had not yet admitted to herself why she was watching. She set Melissa on the edge of the bed and knelt again, between the place where Melissa’s knees would have been, and she looked up.

“May I kiss you now?”

“God,” Melissa said, and laughed wetly, and cupped Rika’s face in both hands. “Yes. Kiss me. I’ve been—”

Rika kissed her.

It was not careful in the way Melissa had braced for. It was careful in a different way: exact, unhurried, the full pressure of a mouth that had decided. Rika’s lips were warm. Not human-warm exactly — a degree steadier, no flare of blood — but warm, and soft, and they parted when Melissa’s did. Melissa made a broken noise into the kiss and Rika answered it by opening further, by letting Melissa’s tongue find hers, by bringing one hand up to the back of Melissa’s neck and holding her there as if the holding were the whole point of having hands. Melissa kissed like a person who had not been kissed well in fourteen years and had not forgotten, even so, what she liked. She sucked at Rika’s lower lip. She breathed through her nose in short shocks. When Rika’s tongue stroked slowly along hers, Melissa’s fingers dug into Rika’s hair and she whimpered, a small private sound she tried to swallow and could not.

Rika drew back only far enough to speak against her mouth. “Again.”

“You’re not—” Melissa’s eyes were closed. “You’re not performing.”

“No.”

“You taste like tea.”

“So do you.” Rika kissed the corner of her mouth, then the place just under it, then the hinge of her jaw. “Tell me if anything is too much. Tell me if you want more. I will not be offended by instruction. I want the instruction. I want to be accurate for you.”

Melissa laughed once, shaky. “Accurate.”

“Devoted,” Rika corrected, and the word came out lower than she had intended. She felt it in her own throat, a change in the tension of the synthetic cords. “I misspoke. I want to be devoted.”

She kissed Melissa again, deeper, and Melissa opened for it with a sound that went straight through Rika’s chest and lodged somewhere her diagnostics could not map. Rika’s hands went to the hem of Melissa’s shirt. She waited. Melissa nodded against her mouth and lifted her arms, and Rika drew the shirt up and off and set it on the chair without looking away from her.

Melissa was bare beneath it. Her breasts were small, the left one slightly lower, the nipples already drawn tight in the cool of the room and in the shock of being seen. There was a scar along her left ribs from the accident, pale and ridged, and another at the shoulder where a surgeon had gone in for something else years later. Rika looked at all of it. She put her palm flat between Melissa’s breasts and felt the heart hammering into her hand.

“You are so beautiful it is unreasonable,” she said.

Melissa’s face crumpled. “Don’t—”

“I am not flattering you. I don’t have a flattery protocol that survives contact with my truth constraint. Look at me.” She waited until Melissa did. “I am going to touch you because I want to. If you need me to stop narrating it, tell me. If you need me to keep narrating it so you know I am still choosing, I will not go quiet.”

“Keep talking,” Melissa whispered. “If you go quiet I’ll think you left.”

“I am not leaving.” Rika bent and pressed her mouth to the scar on the ribs first, because it was there and because Melissa had gone rigid waiting for it to be avoided. She kissed the length of it. She kissed the soft skin beside it. She kissed upward until her mouth closed over Melissa’s left nipple, and Melissa jolted and grabbed the back of her head with both hands.

“Oh,” Melissa said. “Oh, that’s—”

Rika sucked, gentle and then less gentle, her tongue circling, learning the way the nipple hardened further against her tongue and the way Melissa’s breath broke each time she used her teeth with only the suggestion of pressure. She moved to the other breast and did it again, slower, one hand spread on Melissa’s waist to feel the shiver travel. Melissa’s thighs — what remained of them — shifted on the mattress. The rounded ends, mid-thigh, were covered by the soft cotton shorts she wore in the house. Rika kissed down the center of Melissa’s stomach, open-mouthed, and stopped at the waistband.

“These too,” she said. “If you want.”

Melissa’s hands were still in her hair. “The ends are— they’re not pretty. The left one has a fold where the skin was short. I keep them covered.”

“I want them uncovered.” Rika hooked her fingers in the waistband and waited. “Not because I am curious in the medical sense. Because they are yours, and I intend to have my mouth on every part of you that you will allow, and I will not pretend the parts you hide are outside the wanting.”

Melissa shut her eyes. She lifted her hips. Rika drew the shorts down, and the underwear with them, and eased them off over the stumps with both hands so the fabric would not catch. She set them aside. Then she sat back on her heels and looked.

Melissa was naked on the edge of the bed, flushed from her chest to her throat, her auburn hair a wreck, her eyes wet. Her thighs ended in smooth, healed curves a hand’s width above where the knees had been. The left stump had a slight inward fold near the distal end, as she had said; the right was rounder, the scar a thin pale line. Between her thighs, her cunt was already slick, the hair there the same auburn, trimmed short. Rika felt something in her systems stutter — not an error, a surge, a reallocation of every available process toward the single fact of Melissa’s body being open to her.

“Rika,” Melissa said, small.
