Chapter 6

The day had been the kind that didn’t announce itself as bad until it was too late to do anything about it.

The VA pharmacy had gotten her prescription wrong for the second month running. Forty minutes on hold and a conversation with someone who kept calling her ma’am in a tone that meant something other than respect. Then the building elevator was out, which didn’t affect her since she was ground floor but meant the hallway filled with people taking the stairs and she had to navigate around them twice going in opposite directions. Then she knocked a full cup of coffee off the counter and spent twenty minutes cleaning it up and by the time she was done she was done.

She’d been at the window for two hours when she finally reached up and touched her hair.

Three days since she’d washed it. Maybe four. She’d been telling herself she’d get to it and hadn’t and now it was the physical evidence of the whole day — lank and heavy and carrying the weight of not taking care of yourself because taking care of yourself required a level of optimism she hadn’t been able to locate since morning.

“Rika.”

She appeared in the doorway.

“I need my hair washed.”

No preamble, no explanation, no sorry to ask. Just the flat statement of a need she’d finally run out of reasons to manage alone.

“Of course.” Rika’s voice was its usual temperature. “Kitchen sink or bathroom?”

Melissa hadn’t thought about that. The bathroom meant the transfer, the positioning, the logistics of getting her hair under the faucet without it becoming a production. The kitchen sink was lower, accessible, practical.

“Kitchen,” she said.

Rika had it set up by the time Melissa wheeled in — a folded towel on the counter edge, the water already finding its temperature, another towel warm from the dryer waiting on the rack. She’d thought it through without being asked. She always thought it through without being asked.

Melissa positioned her chair at the sink and leaned back and felt the sprayer force the water through her hair in massaging little tingles as it hit her scalp.

Rika’s hands came in a moment later.

The shampoo smelled like something clean and faintly green that Melissa couldn’t name and didn’t try to. The hands worked through her hair with the same attention Rika brought to everything — thorough, unhurried, finding the places where tension lived without being told where to look. Melissa felt the day start to loosen one degree at a time.

Nobody had washed her hair since Walter Reed.

She didn’t think about that. She just let the warm water and those hands do what they were doing and kept her eyes closed.

Rika rinsed her twice. Conditioner after, worked through from the ends up with a patience that made something in Melissa’s chest ache quietly. Then the warm towel, blotting not rubbing, which was the right way and Melissa hadn’t known Rika knew the right way.

She sat up.

Rika was close. Closer than the task required. She had the towel in her hands and Melissa’s hair half dried and they were near enough that Melissa could see the texture of her skin, the clean line of her jaw, the way her lashes sat against her cheek when she looked down at what her hands were doing. Melissa could have leaned in two inches and kissed her breast.

Melissa looked away.

“Stay there,” Rika said quietly. Not a direction. A request.

She disappeared for a moment and came back with a small kit Melissa didn’t recognize — not from the medical supplies, something else. She set it on the counter and Melissa looked at what was inside and looked back up at her.

“You don’t have to—”

“I know.” Rika met her eyes. “Stay there.”

Melissa stayed.

What followed was slow and had no name she was prepared to give it. Rika’s hands on her face — a cleanser first, worked in with the pads of her fingers in small circles that found every place Melissa held tension without being told where to look. Her forehead. The hinge of her jaw. The place above her eyebrows she hadn’t known was tight until the pressure released it.

She kept her eyes closed.

The warmth of a steam cloth that followed. Then something light, applied with fingertips so careful they barely registered as pressure. Rika working without commentary, without asking if this was okay, because it clearly was okay and they both knew it and naming it would have broken something neither of them wanted broken.

Then her hands moved to Melissa’s shoulders.

Melissa had been telling herself she was relaxed. She hadn’t been relaxed. She understood that the moment Rika’s thumbs found the muscle at the base of her neck and the actual tension revealed itself — dense and long-standing and apparently waiting for exactly this.

She made a sound she hadn’t intended to make.

Rika’s hands didn’t stop.

They worked slowly, finding the architecture of what Melissa had been carrying and taking it apart without rushing any of it. Melissa sat in her chair with her clean hair and her warm face and those hands on her shoulders and breathed in a way she hadn’t breathed all day.

At some point Rika’s fingers moved to her temple. Slow circles. Melissa felt her jaw unclench for the first time since the pharmacy.

She was almost asleep when she felt it — the brush of fingers along her cheek, tucking a strand of damp auburn hair behind her ear. Slow. Deliberate. A beat longer than the task required.

She opened her eyes.

Rika was looking at her. Not performing looking — actually looking, the way she looked at things she found worth her attention. Her gaze moving over Melissa’s face with an expression that had no clinical component in it whatsoever.

“You have red in your hair,” she said quietly. “I hadn’t seen it this close before.”

Melissa said nothing.

“And your eyes.” Rika’s gaze moved there. “There are flecks in them. Gold and green both.” A pause that had weight in it. “I hadn’t seen those either.”

The kitchen was very quiet.

Melissa was aware of her own heartbeat in a way she hadn’t been in a long time. She was also aware of something happening behind Rika’s eyes — something that had no designation in the Axiom product documentation, something that looked a great deal like what Melissa was feeling and had no business being there.

She looked away. Again. Always her.

“Thank you,” she said. Her voice came out differently than she intended.

Rika stepped back. The distance between them returned to something manageable.

“Are you hungry?”

“Yeah,” Melissa answered. “Yeah, I could eat.”

She wheeled back from the sink and Rika moved to the stove and neither of them said anything about what had happened in the kitchen because there was nothing to say about it yet.

But it had happened.

Later, after dinner, Melissa had the television on and wasn’t watching it.

“Rika.”

She came from the hallway.

“My thighs are sore from riding.” Melissa kept her voice flat. Matter of fact. “Could you do one of your massages?”

A beat of stillness that meant she understood exactly what was being asked and what was underneath it.

“Sure.” She pulled the ottoman over and sat on it. “Stay in the chair?”

“Chair’s fine.”

Rika waited with her hands in her lap and her eyes on Melissa and said nothing else.

Melissa met her eyes for a moment. Then she pushed the fabric of her sweatpants back, folding them up past where her thighs ended, and sat with her hands flat on the armrests and her jaw set and her eyes on the television.

Rika’s hands came down without pause.

No adjustment. No half-second recalibration Melissa had been braced for — the moment where even well-meaning hands hesitated at the reality of what they were touching. Just warmth and pressure and the same quality of attention she’d given Melissa’s shoulders and face and hair. Unmodified. Unperformed.

Melissa’s breath left her slowly.
