Chapter 1: Mangas Coloradas O’Shea
Debbie— I am sitting in front of the Veteran’s Hospital in Memphis smoking my second cigarette. This black guy keeps trying to talk to me and I am trying to avoid him. He has seen my tattoos and he knows. I stomp out the butt and go back inside.
I am not a vet, but my father is. I go up to his room and look in. He seems to be sleeping peacefully so I decide to go to the cafeteria and get some breakfast.
In the cafeteria I go through the line and get a couple of eggs, bacon and toast with a cup of coffee. It is 9am and the breakfast crowd is gone and there are plenty of empty tables. I pick one that has a big redheaded man sitting at it and ask if he minds if I join him. He motions for me to sit. I notice he is nursing a cup of coffee.
I had just started to eat when that black guy from the street walks in. He is with a friend. I thought that maybe he would leave me alone if I was with someone, but no. He walks over to the table and says something about me going out to his car with him.
“Look I am here with my father, and I just want to be left alone.”
“I know what you are bitch. And I know who you belong to. This won’t take long, just come out to my car in the parking lot. I have the money.”
“Please leave. I don’t do that anymore.”
“Get your ass up and...”
The red headed man stands up. He is big. He towers over the black man at maybe 6’5” and 230 pounds. The black guy is maybe 5’7” and 150lbs at the most. He starts to say something to the big man when his friend grabs him by the arm.
“Junior, remember me telling you about the conversation I overheard? This is the Marine. Let’s go.”
