Chapter 3: The Planning
Three days ago I rode up to the house and there are a couple of cars in the driveway. One is the sheriff’s car. Zulu and I are cousins and good friends. Remember he is a former Marine, an officer like Captain Jack.
I rush into the house thinking something is wrong. I was right.
Debbie is crying, Dove is telling her everything will be alright, Mike and Zulu are at the kitchen table drawing on a sheet of paper.
“Can somebody please tell me what is going on?”
Debbie runs to me crying even harder than before, “This is all my fault. We should just leave and go to Florida.”
“Nobody is going anywhere young lady. We are going to handle this problem once and for all.” That was Captain Jack speaking in his best command voice. He is old but he is in charge.
“What is going on?”
“It seems that the people who trafficked your wife a few years ago want her back.”
“How did you find that out?”
Dove spoke up, “I have been warned and it looks like she was right.” The “She” being that Shaman whose picture is on the wall behind me.
“When is this going to happen?” Notice I said, “going to happen” not “supposed to happen.”
“Tomorrow night at around mid-night. They think we will all be asleep. We are going to surprise them.” Mike is the one talking. He is drawing a map with firing positions and a kill box. Ambush 1-0-1.
“Let me see what you have.” I also have been there and done that, I think I may still have the tee-shirt. You know the one that says “Kill them all. Let God sort them out.”
The plan looked good. The only problem I saw was that they had a superior force. The recon Zulu had done showed them with 14 people in two vans, all probably armed to the teeth. We have what seven shooters at most?”
“No, we have nine, you, Zulu, Joe, Captain Jack, John, Sean, me, JJ, and Grandma Becky. The two women will be at the windows in the attic with rifles. The other seven of us will be in a trench that Joe is going to dig just before dark with the backhoe. Two feet deep with the dirt piled on the side towards the house. That gives us four feet of cover.” Mike has a good plan.
