Chapter 6: The Twin Everyone Loved

Kael woke up before dawn and checked his ribs first.

The dark mark was still there. It was about the size of a coin, black at the center, with thin lines spreading outward. It did not hurt. When he pressed it, the skin felt the same as the skin around it.

He put on two layers of clothing and tied his belt tight.

Does it look different? Maltherion asked.

“No. Same as last night.”

Then leave it alone. I will think about it.

“You said it was not supposed to be there.”

I said that. I also said I do not know what it is. Do not ask me again until I have something to tell you.

Kael took out his notebook and wrote the date, the size of the mark, and the time he first saw it. Then he hid the book under a loose board beneath his bed and went to breakfast.

The Voryn training yard was a wide stretch of packed dirt behind the main hall, surrounded by wooden racks of practice swords and stone weights. Every morning, the children of the house and a few relatives’ sons gathered there for two hours of instruction.

Master Garrick ran the lessons. He was a lean man with a gray beard and a stiff back, a retired soldier who had reached the peak of Ashen Marrow before an injury ended his career. The family paid him well, and he took the job seriously.

Everyone in the yard knew how the realms worked. The first realm, Ember Vein, was where a person awakened the energy inside their body and learned basic techniques. The second, Ashen Marrow, sank that energy into the bones and raised strength and speed. Most students spent years in Ember Vein. Reaching Ashen Marrow before eighteen was rare.

Lys had reached it at sixteen.

“Line up,” Garrick called. “Today we test spirit gathering.”

Twelve students formed a row. Lys stood at the front, because he always did. Kael stood at the end, because he always did.

Lord Voryn sat on a bench at the edge of the yard with a cup of tea. He came to watch about once a week. Everyone knew why.

“Palms up,” said Garrick. “Gather spirit energy from the air, pull it into your hands, and hold it for ten breaths. Those who can make it visible, do so. Begin.”

The students closed their eyes. For a moment, the only sound was breathing.

Then a blue-white glow appeared above Lys’s palms.

It was clear and steady, about the size of a fist. It did not flicker. It stayed above his hands as if it had been placed there.

A murmur ran through the other students.

“Good,” Garrick said. “Hold it, Lys. Count with me. Five. Six. Seven.”

At ten, Lys opened his eyes and let the light fade. He looked a little embarrassed.

“Very good,” said Garrick. “Textbook. Your control is better than some Ashen Marrow cultivators I have trained.”

Lord Voryn set down his cup. “Well done, Lys.”

Lys smiled and bowed to his father. “Thank you, Father.”

Kael kept his eyes on his own hands.

His palms were empty.

He had tried everything the book described. He pulled air into his lungs, directed his attention to his hands, and reached for spirit energy. A little warmth gathered in his fingers. It stayed there, faint and invisible, like body heat.

Nothing appeared. No light, no glow.

He had not awakened Ember Vein. That was the plain fact. Every other student in the yard had at least a spark of internal energy. Kael had a notebook full of breathing notes and a voice in his head.

Do not try to copy him, Maltherion said. That method gathers energy from outside. Your body does not work that way yet.

“Then how does it work?” Kael whispered, so low that no one could hear.

From the inside. The Black Ash Circulation is meant to force an awakening. The yard drills are not.

“So I should stop.”

Do what the master says. Look ordinary. Keep your real practice for the night.

Kael agreed. He held his hands out until the ten breaths were over.

Garrick walked down the line, nodding at each student. A boy named Torin had managed a tiny spark. A girl named Mira had made a faint gray glow. When he reached Kael, he stopped.

“Nothing again?”

“Nothing, Master.”

Garrick sighed. It was not an unkind sound, but it was tired. “Keep at it. Some people awaken late.”

“Yes, Master.”

The other students did not laugh. They did not need to. A few of them looked at Kael, then at Lys, and then away.

After the lesson, Lord Voryn walked across the yard. Kael thought for a moment that his father was coming to speak to him. But the man stopped in front of Lys instead, put a hand on his shoulder, and said, “The Tournament of Seven Cities opens next year. If you keep this up, you can win it.”

“I will try, Father.”

“You will do more than try.” Lord Voryn’s voice was warm. It was a voice Kael had heard many times, always directed at his brother.

Then the older man glanced down the line. His eyes passed over the other students and stopped on Kael for about one breath.

“Keep trying,” he said.

That was all.

Kael bowed. “Yes, Father.”

Two words, said Maltherion. Your brother got a full speech.

“I noticed,” Kael said under his breath.

Does it bother you?

“It is useful information. I do not have to feel it.”

You are lying to yourself.

“Maybe.” Kael turned to put away the practice sword he had not used. “But it is a lie that helps me work.”

That afternoon, his mother called him to the sitting room.

Lady Voryn was a tall woman with a gentle face and a habit of folding her hands when she was nervous. She sat by the window with a cup of tea going cold in front of her. She had been sewing, and a half-finished embroidery lay on her lap.

“Kael, dear. Sit.”

He sat.

“I heard about this morning,” she said. “About the spirit gathering.”

“It is fine, Mother.”
