Chapter 5: The First Breath

Kael sat still and stared at the dead candle.

“What do you mean, it is not your technique?” he asked.

Maltherion did not answer right away. When he did, his voice was flat and careful.

The Black Ash Circulation moves heat. It does not call anything out of the body. It does not change the color of fire, and it does not make a second heartbeat.

“Then why did it happen?”

I do not know.

“That is the second time tonight you have said that.”

Then you should understand how serious it is. Maltherion paused. Something in you changed the method while you were using it. Until I know what, we go slowly. No more practice tonight.

Kael looked at the back of his hand. The mark was gone, and the skin looked normal. He also noticed that Maltherion had stopped talking about teaching him a path and had started talking about control.

He is worried, Kael thought. Good. A worried teacher is easier to question.

He lay down and said nothing more. Sleep took a long time to come.

The next morning, Kael went through the day as usual. He ate breakfast with the family. His mother asked if he had slept well, and he said yes. Lys talked about a sword lesson with a visiting master. Their father nodded along and did not look at Kael once.

Kael ate his rice and counted how many times anyone said his name. It was twice, both times by servants.

That evening, he went to his room early and locked the door.

You want to try again, said Maltherion.

“Yes.”

I said we should wait.

“You said we should go slowly. A day is slow enough.” Kael sat on the bed. “Every night I wait is a night my brother gets ahead. I do not have time to be careful.”

You are a fool.

“Probably. But I am a fool who has been told the method is safe.”

I never said safe. The voice sounded irritated. I said it was a basic method. Basic does not mean gentle, especially for a body like yours.

“Then tell me what to expect.”

Pain.

“How much?”

More than you think.

Kael thought about that. Then he put a folded cloth in his mouth, so he would not cry out and wake the servants in the next hall.

“Start,” he said.

The first breath went smoothly. Kael pulled the warmth up from his chest, as he had done the night before, and sent it along his right arm.

The second breath was harder. The heat stopped at his elbow, as if it had hit a wall.

Push, said Maltherion. Your channels are closed. Normal cultivators open them over years, with medicine and a master. You have neither. So you will open them by force.

“By force?”

Breathe.

Kael pushed.

Pain shot up his arm like a hot nail being driven into the bone. His fingers curled. Sweat ran into his eyes. He bit into the cloth and kept going, forcing the heat through a passage that was not ready for it.

The heat broke through the elbow. It ran up to his shoulder, and then down his back, and then it hit the next blockage.

Kael’s whole body shook. His legs went numb. He heard himself breathing through the cloth in short, hard gasps.

Do not stop, said Maltherion. If you stop now, the heat will turn back and damage your arm.

Kael did not stop. He pushed again, and the next blockage gave way, and the pain doubled.

His vision went gray at the edges. His ears rang. He could no longer feel the bed under him, only the heat and the pain and the sound of his own heart.

On the sixth breath, the room started to tilt.

Kael knew what was happening. He had read about it in one of his father’s old books. When a body could not take the strain, it blacked out. If the practitioner was lucky, they woke up the next morning. If not, the heat kept moving through their channels while they were unconscious, with no one to guide it.

He pictured his right arm with ruined channels. Maybe permanently.

Keep going, said Maltherion. His voice sounded far away. You are almost through the first section.

Kael did not answer.

He was thinking about how Maltherion had said keep going and do not stop, but had never once said you are doing well or that is enough. A real teacher would watch his student’s limits. This one only watched the clock.

He wants to see how far I can go, Kael thought. He is testing me.

His hands were shaking so hard he could barely hold the position. His body was giving up.

He made a decision.
