Chapter 3: The Soul That Could Not Be Swallowed

Kael did not answer the threat. He sat on the edge of his bed and listened to his own heartbeat.

He said “use.” He did not say “take.”

“You said you cannot break the wall,” Kael said. “So how will you use my body?”

Like this.

The cold came back.

This time it did not creep. It hit him all at once, like a wave of black water. Kael’s head snapped back. Maltherion’s will drove into his mind like a spear, aimed straight at the center of his soul.

Open!

Then the gold woke up.

It felt like a mountain falling on him. Light burned behind his eyes, and every bone in his body rang like a bell. Kael opened his mouth to scream.

He bit down on the blanket instead.

He was afraid. He was more afraid than he had ever been, and part of him wanted to beg. His knees shook. Tears ran down his face. But one thought stayed clear through the pain: If he hears fear, he will push again. And again.

So he held on to the one thing he could control. He let his breath go slow through his nose. He pressed his nails into his palm and counted.

One. Two. Three. Four.

He nearly broke at six. He almost screamed at seven.

On the count of nine, the cold hand tore itself out of his mind.

Kael lay back on the bed. His shirt was soaked. His hands were shaking, so he hid them under the blanket, as if he were only cold.

The voice came back thin and hard.

Impossible.

“You are breathing hard,” Kael said quietly. His own voice was rough. “For a voice with no lungs.”

You mock me.

“I am guessing.” Kael stared at the ceiling. “That was your second try. You sounded weaker afterward. Maybe every attempt costs you something. Maybe it costs you a great deal.”

He waited.

“If I am right, you cannot afford to keep trying.”

Maltherion did not answer. Kael let the silence run. He had learned long ago that people say the most when they think no one is waiting.

You are observant, Maltherion said at last. More than a boy should be.

“Thank you.”

It was not praise. The voice moved slowly through his mind, almost circling. That light was not yours, Kael Voryn. I have looked at your soul twice. It is thin. It is plain. It would not stop a child with a stick. But that gold is something else. It does not belong to you. It does not even belong to this age.

“Then what is it?”

I do not know.

It was the first honest thing the voice had said all night. Kael could hear it. It sounded tired and a little bitter, like a man admitting he was lost.

Kael sat up slowly. He kept his face calm.

“Then neither of us can win by force,” he said. “You need me alive. I need you to stop attacking me. So let us talk like two people who need something from each other.”

Careful, boy.*

“I have three terms.”

He held up one finger.

“First, you never take my body without my permission. Not for a moment. Not even in an emergency.”

And if I refuse?

“Then I will never sleep without fighting you. I will never think a quiet thought. And whatever is behind that wall will keep turning toward you every time you push.”

The warmth in his chest pulsed, as if it agreed.

Maltherion was silent for a long time.

Continue.

A second finger. “Second, you tell me the truth. About who you are, what you want, and what is inside me. If I catch you lying, the deal is over.”

A thousand years of pride, and you ask me for honesty.
