Chapter 2: The Voice in the Dark
Kael did not move.
He lay on his bed with his eyes open, listening. Moonlight barely reached him through the shutters. His heart was beating fast, but his breathing stayed slow and quiet.
Do not panic, he told himself. Think.
He sat up slowly. His hand slid under the pillow and found the small knife he kept there. It was not much of a weapon, but it made him feel a little better.
“Who is there?” he said.
No answer.
He stood and walked to the door. It was still locked, the bolt firmly in place. He checked the window next. The shutters were closed and the latch was tight. He looked under the bed, behind the desk, and inside the wardrobe. He even checked the ceiling beams.
Nothing.
It was the same small, plain room it had always been.
He stood in the middle of the floor for a long moment, listening to the quiet.
Maybe I imagined it, he thought. It was a long day. I was tired.
He was almost ready to believe it.
You did not imagine it.
Kael froze.
The voice had not come from the room this time. It had come from inside his head. It was slow and deep and calm, and it sounded like it had all the time in the world.
Do not look around, said the voice. You will not find me with your eyes.
Kael’s fingers tightened on the knife. His mouth was dry, but he kept his face still.
“Who are you?” he said quietly.
You do not scream, the voice said. It sounded a little surprised. You do not run. Most children would.
“I’m not most children.”
No. A pause. I see that now.
Kael sat down on the edge of the bed. His legs did not feel strong, but he did not let them shake. “You are not a ghost,” he said. “Ghosts do not talk inside your head.”
Correct.
“You are not a demon beast. They cannot speak at all.”
Also correct.
“Then what are you?”
The voice was quiet for a moment. When it spoke again, it sounded proud.
I am not a demon, boy. Demons are servants. They bow to whoever is strong. I was the one they bowed to.
Kael said nothing.
I am Maltherion, said the voice. Once, I was the highest of angels. Then I was the Black Seraph, who made the sky bleed. I have burned cities. I have broken armies. I have stood before a goddess and nearly won.
The words were big, and they should have sounded foolish coming from a voice in the dark.
But they did not. Kael felt every word press against his mind like a heavy hand.
“I have never heard that name,” he said carefully.
Of course not. The voice grew colder. A thousand years is long enough for the world to forget anything. Even me.
Kael looked at his hands. They were steady. He was a little proud of that.
“Why are you here?” he asked.
I am here because I have nowhere else to be. The voice sounded tired for the first time. My body was reduced to ash. My soul was thrown into the void, where there is nothing. No light. No sound. No time. I was alone there for longer than you can imagine.
“And then?”
And then I heard something. A pulse. A heartbeat. The voice paused. It led me here. To you.
Kael’s chest felt warm. It was the same quiet warmth he had felt all his life, the steady beat that did not belong to him. He pressed his hand against it without thinking.
“I do not understand,” he said.
You do not need to. Not yet. The voice came closer, and the air in the room felt thick. All you need to know is this. I need a body. Yours is the only one I can reach.
“No.”
I did not ask.
Something cold touched the edge of Kael’s mind.
It was like a hand slipping under a door. At first, it was no more than a thin pressure. Then it pushed.
Pain tore through his head. It was sharp and sudden, like a nail being driven into his skull. He cried out and dropped the knife. His hands flew to his temples. Dark shapes crawled across his vision.
Open, said Maltherion. Open your soul.
“Get ... out...” Kael gasped.
Open.
The cold pressed deeper. Kael felt his thoughts begin to slip away, like sand through his fingers. His name. His home. His brother’s face. Everything was getting thin and far away.
