Prologue: The Fall of the Black Seraph

One thousand years ago, the world of Aerathis was dying.

The sky had turned the color of old blood. Black smoke rose from every city, and the ground shook day and night under the feet of demon armies. Villages were gone. Rivers ran red. Mothers hid their children in caves and prayed to a goddess who seemed too far away to hear them.

At the center of it all stood a fortress of black stone. It was bigger than a mountain. Its towers were sharp like claws, and its walls were covered with glowing red marks that pulsed like a living heart. This was the home of Maltherion, the Black Seraph.

He sat on a throne made of broken swords. Six wings of shadow spread out behind him.

Maltherion had once been an angel, one of the highest in heaven. But he did not want to serve the goddess. He wanted to rule. So he left heaven, stole a piece of divine power, and twisted it with dark arts. The power burned him and changed him. His eyes turned black. His voice became cold. Now he was stronger than any demon, and he wanted to challenge the goddess herself.

In the great hall, a demon general knelt before the throne. His armor was cracked and his hands were shaking.

“My lord,” he said. “The goddess’s seven chosen leaders have joined together. Each one carries an aspect of her power. The Seven Archangels fly beside them.”

Maltherion smiled slowly.

“All of them?”

“Yes, my lord. All of them.”

“Good.” He stood up. The entire fortress groaned. “Then I will not need to hunt them one by one.”

He walked to the edge of the balcony and looked out. Far away, seven bright lights were rising over the horizon. They were white, gold, silver, and blue. They moved fast, like falling stars pulled back into the sky.

Behind him, a million demons began to roar.

“Open the formations,” Maltherion said.

The red marks on the walls flared. A huge circle of light spread across the land below. Inside it, the earth cracked open and beasts crawled out. They were giant wolves with burning eyes, serpents as long as rivers, and winged monsters with bone-white skulls for faces. They had been fed forbidden pills made from stolen souls. Their bodies were swollen with power, and their minds were empty except for hunger.

“Let them come,” said Maltherion. “Let heaven see what it made.”

The battle began at dawn.

The goddess’s seven chosen leaders came down first. When they raised their hands, beams of pure light tore through the demon lines. Hundreds of monsters burned to ash with each strike.

The Seven Archangels followed. Their swords were made of fire and their wings were wide and bright. They crashed into the demon army like a wave striking a cliff.

The ground exploded. A city called Varenhold, home to two hundred thousand people, vanished in one breath. A mountain range cracked in half. A lake boiled dry in seconds. Lightning fell from the sky for three days without stopping.

Maltherion fought at the front. He moved like a black storm. He crushed swords with his bare hands. He split beams of light in two and sent them back. He used soul techniques that ripped at the minds of his enemies, and some of them fell from the sky screaming.

Then he met Seraveil, the youngest of the Seven Archangels.

Seraveil was fast, and brave, and he did not run. He and Maltherion had trained side by side in heaven, long ago.

“Brother in arms,” Seraveil said. His sword was shaking. “Stop. Please. It is not too late.”

“It was too late the day I left,” said Maltherion.

Seraveil attacked anyway. He fought well. He even cut Maltherion across the chest, and black blood dripped from the wound. For one moment, Maltherion looked surprised.

Then he drove his hand through Seraveil’s heart.

The young archangel did not scream. He only looked at Maltherion with sad eyes. His wings turned to light, and the light blew away on the wind.

Above the battlefield, one of the chosen leaders cried out and fell to her knees. Then she got up again, and her light grew stronger than before.

On the second day, the seven chosen leaders joined their power and made a wall of light across the battlefield. The demon army could not pass. On the third day, the archangels broke through the black gate and burned the lower halls.

Maltherion was angry now. For the first time, he felt something like fear.

“Enough,” he said.

He rose into the sky. His six black wings opened wide, and the darkness around him grew thick. He called every soul he had ever stolen. Millions of them rushed into his body, screaming, and his power doubled, then doubled again.

The air turned heavy. The sun went dim.

Then a soft voice spoke from above.
