As Bess drove to the office on Monday, she was buzzing, both physically and emotionally. Yes, her and Stuart did spend a lot of the weekend in bed (she reflexively squeezed her thighs together as she cast her mind back) but they also went out together, just enjoying each other’s company and talking a lot about their lives in the past and their hopes for the future. It’s amazing how much closer they felt, Bess thought.
As she parked and came into the store, was standing just inside the doors. He turned around grinning. “Well, hello, beautiful!”. He leered at her.
“Morning!” Marco said brightly on the other side of her. She let out a small squeal as he groped her while kissing her neck. Bess cast a panicked look into the store but there didn’t seem to be any customers around. She pushed Marco away, her face beet red. “Marco,” she hissed, “This is really dangerous. We can’t do that here.”
“Fine, fine,” Marco grinned. “Maybe we will visit your office soon.”
Bess found her face reddening. “Uh, I don’t ... know...” she stammered.
“You know you want to,” Bruce glowered at her, also making a grab. She batted his hand away and hurried across the store into the sanctuary of her office. What am I going to do? she thought in something of a panic. I can’t keep fighting them off.
In order to maintain discretion, Stuart drove back home on Sunday and was now driving in from home. He also felt strange. It was as if he was flying high but seeing a lot of his past life below him. He could now admit to himself that he was falling for Bess. This weekend confirmed it. Not only did they drive each other to some explosive orgasms but talking to her was so easy. He found himself enjoying every minute of their time together and was keen for more soon. And yet, this meant that his time as part of the group with Bruce and Marco was coming to an end. I’m going to remain faithful to her ... there’s no way I can be the one to hurt her like this, he thought. He set his jaw as he thought about the current situation and the need to ensure that Bess was not harassed by the other guys.
He went into the store. Some customers were by now moving amongst the big box warehouse space, floating between beds and wardrobes like twigs borne by the current. Bruce gave him a weird look.
“You were, uh, a bit uncontactable over the weekends?” he said, part question, part statement of fact.
“Uh, yeah, doing a few things,” Stuart said, pushing down the memory of dimly being aware of the buzzing phone while he was preparing to enter Bess on Sunday morning, as she sat on the table amongst the remains of breakfast, leaning back, legs wide open, her eyes shining...
He shook himself back to reality. “Um, so yeah,” he said somewhat lamely, “what have you been up to?”
Bruce grinned. “I was also doing ... a few things,” he said lavisciously. He elbowed Stu, “Our manager is one hot item in the sack. Showed it to me again after I dropped her car off. Bitch couldn’t get enough!”
Stuart stared at him. Oh no ... did I really used to be like this?
“Yeah, that does sound epic,” he tried to play along, gritting his teeth.
Marco approached them, grinning from ear to ear. “Greetings, boys,” he beamed at them, “I think we should corner Bess in the office again tonight, eh? Sounds like she is up for it, from what Bruce is telling me. All these stuck-up bitches...”
“Um, yeah, look, guys, I think we should do some work, hey?” Stuart said, clearing his throat. Bruce and Marco gave him weird looks. Bruce raised his eyebrows.
“Right-o,” he said after a short silence. He moved away with Marco. “Can I help you?” he asked an older couple, looking at a bed.
Stuart drifted around until he was a bit closer to Bess’ office. He looked furtively around and saw to his relief that both Bruce and Marco seemed to be occupied with customers. He quickly walked up the stairs and entered the door.
Bess was sitting at the desk, reading a report, or rather staring at it. She looked up as he entered and gave him a weak smile.
“Hey there,” he said, suddenly feeling at loss for words. Normally, he insulated himself from any emotions that women in his life were showing. It was, her considered, none of his concern – only his own well-being was. But now it was as if Beth’s mood had a direct connection to his own heart. This was the reason why he knew to shut and lock the door and cross the room to her desk in a few quick strides, right before the dam broke.
Bess’ eyes brimmed with tears as he knelt next to her while she collapsed against him. She buried her face in his shoulder, sobs wracking her entire body.
Stuart patted her back, feeling a mix of helplessness and rising anger. He could guess what the reason for this outburst was. “It will be okay,” he said. The words sounded hollow and he thought it might be best if he just held her for a bit.
This seemed to do the trick as Bess gradually got hold of herself. She looked up at him, her face tear-stained. Stuart felt a surge of pity and tenderness, another unfamiliar sensation.
“I’m sorry,” his manager said, sniffling, “I’m being unprofessional.”
He reached out, wiping the tears away. “Don’t be,” he said, “I think we’ve both been a bit unprofessional this weekend”. This got a wet giggle out of her, at least.
“Is it...?” He indicated a direction with his head, his jaw clenching.
Bess nodded. “I don’t know how I can work like that...” she drew in a shuddering breath, “I know, I know, I obviously encouraged them on Friday and now they think they are just ... entitled to me. It was just a mistake and now I’m paying for it.” Her voice shook again, threatening to turn into a wail.
Stuart took one of her hands, holding it in both of his. “You didn’t encourage them,” he said, “You were ... look, in the end, they (we, his mind supplied, we. Stop trying to dodge responsibility!), they ... had a plan and it worked,” he found he couldn’t bring himself to say “we”.
“It’s not your fault,” he said firmly, “I will talk to them. Make sure you don’t have any more trouble. I promise.”
Bess smiled at him again through the tears. Every time she did that, Stuart felt like the sun was breaking through the clouds. Impulsively she hugged him against her fiercely. He stroked her hair, trying to ignore the way that her breasts pressed against his chest were having a predictable effect.
“Thank you,” she said, stroking his cheek, “I’m so sorry for this again.” He put a finger against her lips, as if shushing any apologies. She smiled again and again he caught himself thinking how much her smile lit up everything.
He patted her hand and then gave her a quick kiss, tasting salt and heat. “It will be okay,” he said again, feeling more sure of himself this time.
Stuart exited the office and made his way towards where Bruce just finished talking to a customer. He turned around and grinned at Stuart salaciously. Clearly, the fact that he went to Bess’ office didn’t escape his attention. On seeing them, Marco also made his way across.
“Weeell,” Bruce began, leering. “If it isn’t Stewie, making his moves already. Is she ready for more action after work today, you reckon?”
“Uh, look, guys, I don’t think she is interested in anything,” Stuart said, giving him a cold look.
“Why, what do you mean?” Marco asked.
“I mean ... look, guys, I think we need to pull our heads in. What happened, happened, but it was a once-off, okay?” said Stuart.
Bruce looked annoyed. “Look,” he said, “we know she liked, she knows she liked it, what’s wrong with you? You know we can break these bitches...”
“Stop calling her that!” Stuart barely restrained himself from shouting. He was surprised at himself at this visceral reaction.
“What the fuck is wrong with you, man?” Marco asked.
“Yeah,” Bruce sputtered, “what’s come over you all of a sudden?”
“Sorry,” Stuart mumbled. He drew a deep breath, “Look guys, just ... why don’t you just drop it? We don’t want to get in trouble for sexual harassment, do we?”
Bruce looked at him, his lips twisting in a humourless smile. “Is that so?” he asked slowly, “You think I don’t know where you were this weekend?”
“I don’t see how that’s relevant...” Stuart began.
“That’s very relevant,” Bruce cut him off, “You, what, think you can just have her for yourself now? We helped you on Friday, man! We are all entitled to her.”
“You are not...” Stuart again restrained himself. “Look, I’m telling you, she is not interested. You want to get yourself in trouble, you go right ahead.”
Bruce looked at him for a long moment. “Well, Stuwie boy,” he finally said, “I don’t think I will be the one who is in trouble, not by a long shot. Are you sure you don’t want to reconsider your opinion on this situation?”
“No” Stuart said thickly. After the way that Bruce was talking about Bess, he was increasingly finding close proximity with him unpalatable. What’s happening to me? he thought.
“Oookay,” Bruce said, “Well, it’s your choice. Let’s get back to work, Marco. Stuwie here probably doesn’t have much to do, now that he is in the manager’s good books as her little lapdog, eh?” he winked at Stuart who felt his fists clench as he watched them walk away.
Stuart walked the floor, his mind far away. How dare he talk about Bess this way, he thought. Yeah? the other part of his mind asked, well, someone is on a mighty high horse, considering. He quickly avoided continuing that thought in his mind. It doesn’t matter, he thought desperately, I’ve changed, something happened, something about being with Bess, it changed me. He walked on, past the couches and beds.
The day passed quickly. He found himself constantly watching Bruce and Marco. Whenever Bess had to leave her office, it seemed that her interactions with her were purely professional and even on the cool side. As the day went on, she seemed to be a bit more relaxed, despite her still wary air. Sometimes, he caught a quick smiling glance from her and gave her one back, feeling warm inside.
He quickly ducked into her office at the end of the day. She reassured him that she was okay. She seemed to be on the verge of asking if he was coming to her place but she held herself back. Bess also didn’t know what was happening but she felt she wanted a bit of time to sort out her feelings. Stuart was willing to give her space (another thing that was not at all characteristic of his relationships up to that point). Little did he know that his openness to letting her work things out almost made it more complicated for Bess as it made her feelings for him even stronger.
He again reassured her that everything was going to be okay and they parted with a quick kiss.
Towards the end of the following day, Stuart was perturbed to see a woman enter the store and stride directly towards Bess’ office.
“Excuse me, ma’am ... may I help you?” he asked, intercepting her.
The woman looked him up and down, seemingly appraising him. Then she took out her employee ID, flashing it at him.
“Hester Linde, HR” she pronounced coldly. “I’m here to see the manager.”
“Uh, er, yeah, sure,” Stuart stammered, completely taken aback. “Just in that office over there.”
He watched as she walked up the stairs, disappearing inside the office. Turning around, he noticed Bruce also watching her, a small smile playing on his lips. What was he playing at? he wondered. He felt uneasy, his heart heavy within his chest.
