Chapter 8: Clean
Incest Sex Story: Chapter 8: Clean - When Cass told her father she was gay, he didn't get angry. He smiled, and decided a girl who wants girls just never had the right man — and that he'd be the one to prove it. To both of us: she was mine and I was hers, in secret, and had been for a year. He used my paintings to get close. Made me watch. Then made me part of it. By fall he had both our bodies and thought that was all of us. It wasn't — and the part he never reached is why we'll never get out.

I got her up off the daybed when the shaking had worn down to nothing, and she let me move her — dead weight, no help in it, whatever fight she’d had all spent on him and gone — and I walked her out of the studio and through his dark house with the throw around her shoulders and her blood gone tacky where it pressed against my arm. The kitchen still smelled like her birthday. Lemon, sugar, the little smoke off the candles; it hadn’t had the decency to fade yet. We went through it and up the stairs, past his shut door, and I got her into her own room and shut that door too — the one door in the house that was hers — and it wasn’t enough between us and the rest of it, but it was what there was.
I ran the water in her bathroom till it went warm, wet a washcloth, and cleaned her up the way you’d clean up a little kid, sitting her on the edge of the tub, and she let me do that too. The blood came off her thighs easy enough. It had mostly dried, and it went pink and then gone under the cloth, and I rinsed and wrung it and the water ran red and then clear. That part I could fix.
It was the rest of it that beat me. He’d left so much in her — I hadn’t understood how much until I was down there trying to get it out, and it kept coming, thick and gone yellow-white, welling up slow no matter how many times I folded the cloth to a clean side. A whole night of him, working its way back out of her on its own time, more than I’d have believed one body was built to hold. I kept my eyes on the cloth and my hands moving and got what I could off the outside of her — and I could feel the rest of it without looking, the heat coming off her, the swollen give of her under the cloth, everything down there so wrecked and tender that she hissed and jerked whenever I brought it near where she was torn. What he’d put up inside her I couldn’t reach at all. After a while I quit trying, because there was no getting to it.
“Leave it,” she said finally. Hoarse. Not looking at me. “Some of it just — some of it gets to stay, I guess.”
I wanted to stand her in the shower and run it over her till it came off clean, but there was no clean to get her to. What he’d put in her was past where the water went.
She laid her hand flat and low on her own stomach then — right where his had been at the end — and held it there. She didn’t say anything and I didn’t either. There’s a kind of thing you can’t take out and look at with the lights on. You just know it’s in the room with you, and there was nothing to do about it that night, so we let it be.
She caught my wrist when I went to fold the cloth again. “You can look, you know.” She was watching my face instead of the wall. “You looked at it all night for him. You can look at it for me.”
So I made myself. I’d kept my eyes off it the whole time, not let them do the thing they do — but she’d asked, so I looked, and I looked the way I look at everything, all at once and to the bottom. There was nothing left of her hymen. The little wall we’d never once gone through, the place I’d bring my fingers up to and stop at every time because it was the one thing neither of us ever said out loud but both of us left alone — torn clean out of her, no scrap of it left. And she didn’t shut anymore. That was the part I couldn’t get past. She hung open where I looked, slack and raw and used, the lips of her puffed fat and bruised dark down one side where his girth had dragged, the inside of her showing pink and angry, and none of it drew closed when I lifted the cloth away. I’d drawn this exact thing in charcoal an hour ago, every line of it, and made myself not know what I was drawing.
“That bad.”
“No,” I said. It was a lie and she knew it and let me keep it.
Then I watched her reach for it — the old thing, I could see it come up in her, the reflex of it. “Bright side.” A breath that wanted to be a laugh and didn’t make it. “You always did want your fingers in me. Chickened out every single time.” Beat. “Nothing in the way now. He took the whole door off the hinges.”
“Cass.” And for the first time in the whole long run of us, I couldn’t pick it up. Couldn’t bat the terrible thing back the way I always had, every time, for years. The one reflex the two of us had never once missed just died in the air between us — and she watched it die, watched me fail to catch what she’d thrown, and that was almost the worst thing in the whole night.
“It’s supposed to be funny.” Still smiling. The smile wasn’t working and she wouldn’t quit doing it. “It’s — June, it’s supposed to be funny, you’re supposed to —”
And then it went. All of it at once.
She cried the way she’d shaken earlier, like it had been standing behind a door all night waiting for the room to empty. I got down on the floor in front of her and got my arms around her and she came down off the edge of the tub and into my lap, too big for it, the both of us folded up on the bathmat, and I held on and didn’t say any of the things you’re supposed to say, because none of them were true. It wasn’t okay. It wasn’t going to be.
“I’m sorry,” she kept saying into my neck. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry —”
“You didn’t do anything.”
“I did, though.” She pulled back to look at me — wet-faced, past the crying already, into something harder. “That’s the — that’s the thing, June. At the end. I — “ Her mouth worked and nothing came. “You saw.”
I had. I’d drawn it. “That wasn’t you.”
“It was me. It came out of me, he didn’t fake that, I heard myself.” She pressed the heel of her hand down between her legs, hard, like she could push it back out of her body. “Don’t tell me it doesn’t count. You’d know. You always know when it’s real on me.”
And that was the worst one, because it was true — and because she was asking the one person who’d never once lied to her about her own body not to start now. So I didn’t. “I know,” I said. It took everything I had. “I saw it. I know exactly what it was.” I’d built my whole life on reading what her body meant, and I’d stood three feet off with a dead stick of charcoal in my fist and watched it mean yes. If I told her now that it hadn’t, I’d be breaking the last true thing between us to make her feel better for a minute. She didn’t need me to lie to her. She needed me to still be the one who saw her straight. So I stayed that.
She said the rest into my shoulder, quiet enough that I almost got to not hear it. “It was never like that with you. A whole year, and it was never once even close. And I don’t — I don’t understand how he —” She stopped herself.
A month ago I’d have said don’t. I’d have flinched off it and let her swallow the rest alone. But flinching was the thing I’d been doing all summer with a stick of charcoal in my fist, and I was done with it for one night. “He got somewhere I never did,” I said. Out loud, to her, the whole ugly truth of it. “A year of me, and he got there in an hour. I was three feet away. I watched him do it.” She went rigid against me, braced for this to be the thing that finally drove me off her for good. I held on. “You’re not carrying that one alone. I saw it too. It’s in me now, same as it’s in you.”
It wasn’t a comfort. There was no comfort in it. But it was the two of us holding the same unbearable thing at last, out in the open between us, instead of her holding it by herself while I pretended my eyes had been shut. That was the most I had to give her that night, and I gave all of it.
She was the one who moved first. She got her mouth on mine, there on the bathroom floor, still wet-faced, and it wasn’t soft. It was the way I’d kissed her the night before, starving — except it was her doing it to me now, hard, both hands coming up into my hair, and I knew what she was reaching for before she said it.
