Chapter 4: The Human Form
Incest Sex Story: Chapter 4: The Human Form - When Cass told her father she was gay, he didn't get angry. He smiled, and decided a girl who wants girls just never had the right man — and that he'd be the one to prove it. To both of us: she was mine and I was hers, in secret, and had been for a year. He used my paintings to get close. Made me watch. Then made me part of it. By fall he had both our bodies and thought that was all of us. It wasn't — and the part he never reached is why we'll never get out.

Oil paint in a hot room: linseed, turps, and under it that summer the coconut of Cass’s sunscreen. She wore it even indoors. Even bare on the daybed, with no sun to reach her. I’d got so I could mix her skin and not think about the skin. That was the thing that should have scared me and didn’t, anymore: how fast the unbearable turns into a Tuesday.
By the end of June it had climbed a degree at a time to get here — clothed, then a strap down, then bare to the waist, then nude — over weeks of afternoons, each step so small you could call it nothing, until nude was just how we started. She lay the way she lay now, easy, one arm behind her head, gone brown everywhere but the two pale bands the swimsuit kept. Her dad came out with the coffee. He had opinions about the pose these days the way he’d had them about the light, and he’d earned them the same way — by being right in a manner I couldn’t argue and couldn’t forgive.
“Hip’s gone dead,” he said.
“My hip is fine.” Cass, without opening her eyes. “My hip’s a professional.”
“Your hip’s asleep on the job.” And he didn’t tell her how to fix it, the way he had the first weeks. He set the coffee down and crossed the room and fixed it himself.
He put a hand on her — on the rise of her hip, his whole flat palm on my girl’s bare skin — and turned her the quarter-inch he wanted, and left the hand there a beat after the turning was done. Cass didn’t flinch. Why would she; it was Dad, it was the pose, he’d been righting her since she was a kid tipping off a bike. But I painted bodies for a living. I knew what a hand doing its job looked like, and this hand finished its job and stayed. Then it lifted, and he stepped back to see, and I was the only one in the room who’d counted the beat.
“Better,” he said. “See it?”
I saw it. God help me, I saw it — the line came alive off the hip where he’d turned her. I loaded the brush and put down what he’d made.
He tilted his head at her then, considering, a man framing a shot. “You’re painting her like a catalog. Arm here, leg there, all shut up like she’s waiting for a bus.” He crouched at the foot of the daybed, by her knee. “Cass. This leg — let it fall open. No — don’t do anything, that’s the whole trick, don’t pose it. Like when it’s just you in here. Easy.”
And she let her knee fall open.
She did it the way she did it for me — the loose, careless way, the way that meant she felt safe, the way I’d painted her a hundred times in private, for the black folder no one but us ever opened — except she did it now because it was her father asking, from the foot of the daybed, and the whole open front of her came up into the gold light for him to consider and for me to set down.
“There,” he said, gentle, the way you’d quiet a horse. “That’s a human being. That’s the human form. You can’t go your whole life a painter and be squeamish about half of it.” He looked at me over his shoulder, warm, reasonable, a teacher making his point. “Can she, Cass. Tell her she can’t be squeamish.”
“She can’t be squeamish,” Cass said, dutiful, eyes still shut, grinning, easy in her skin — mine and not-mine in the same breath. “She’s an artist.”
