Chapter 3: Life Study

Incest Sex Story: Chapter 3: Life Study - When Cass told her father she was gay, he didn't get angry. He smiled, and decided a girl who wants girls just never had the right man — and that he'd be the one to prove it. To both of us: she was mine and I was hers, in secret, and had been for a year. He used my paintings to get close. Made me watch. Then made me part of it. By fall he had both our bodies and thought that was all of us. It wasn't — and the part he never reached is why we'll never get out.

He brought the coffee out most afternoons now, the way you tend a pot you’ve got going. I learned to hear the inside door before it opened — and to hate the small lift in my own chest when I did, because some part of me had started listening for it.

That day Cass was in the cami — she was always in the cami now, with him drifting out — and I was losing the light and my nerve both, because the cami flattened her into one gray wall and I couldn’t find her underneath it.

He saw it before I said it. He always saw it.

“You’ve been fighting that shirt twenty minutes,” he said to me, from his spot leaning in the inside doorway, over the rim of the mug.

“It’s fine.”

“It’s gray. Everything worth painting on that girl’s under it, and you’re out here doing a study of laundry.” Warm, easy, a man being helpful. And that was the thing, that was always the thing — he wasn’t wrong. I had been painting the gray.

“Cass. Do the artist a favor. Off.”

“‘Off.’” Cass didn’t move, but she rolled her eyes loud enough to hear. “So refined, Dad. Truly. A patron of the arts.”

“I built the gallery, didn’t I? Patron gets to say off.”

She laughed — she always laughed at him, it was half of how they loved each other — and reached for the hem. And then she didn’t, quite. A hitch. A half-second where a year ago, just us, she’d have had it over her head without a thought, and now she cut a look at the inside door, at him leaning in it, and I watched her decide it was fine, he was cool, he was Dad. She pulled it off.

And there she was, bare to the waist in the last of the good light, and the room got its color back all at once — the warm coming up off her skin, the soft new weight of her, the small motion when she breathed. My hands knew what to do before I did; that was the trouble. I’d loved this view a hundred times in this room with no one in it but us, and my hands loved it now the same greedy way, and they did not care one bit that this time there was a man in the doorway loving it too. I put the warmth into her chest and my stomach rolled over doing it and my hand never wavered. You can be sick and sure at once.

“There.” He came in off the doorframe to the board, quiet, looking from her to what I’d made of her. He set a finger an inch off the canvas, over her chest. “You’ve gone soft right here. You’ve got the swell of it, but you’ve smudged the nipple down to nothing, and you’ve barely laid the shadow under the breast — so it sits there flat, like a doll’s. That’s not what’s in front of you. A real painter doesn’t go shy on a nipple.”

And he was right, which was the unbearable part. I had gone soft there, every time. I’d give Cass back true everywhere — the throat, the ribs, the paint-stained hands — and then my brush would gentle on its own the second it reached her breasts: blur the tip of her, keep the whole underswell in half-light. That was the one part of her I only ever finished in the black folder, in the dark, for no eyes but ours.

“Dad. Oh my god.” Cass, arms doing a slow not-quite-cross. “You cannot stand there pointing at my — it’s weird when you—”

“It’s a painting term. Chiaroscuro — that’s your word, June, you taught me that one. I’m being supportive.” Hands up, wounded, delighted.

She threw a cushion at him; he ducked out laughing; it blew off the way all of it blew off. And I stood there with the one thing I only ever painted true for us named out loud in her father’s mouth — and then I did what he said. I laid the shadow in deep under her breast and gave her back the nipple he’d caught me hiding, frank and full, and she came up off the board real and heavy and not only mine anymore. And it was better. That was the part I couldn’t stand. That he was right, and that my hand thanked him for it.

By the next week the cami didn’t come off, because it didn’t go on. That was how he did it — nothing was ever its own event; each thing was only the reasonable next inch off the last, and you can’t make a stand at an inch.

It was the shorts next, on an afternoon that felt like all the others.
