Chapter 13: Kept

Incest Sex Story: Chapter 13: Kept - When Cass told her father she was gay, he didn't get angry. He smiled, and decided a girl who wants girls just never had the right man — and that he'd be the one to prove it. To both of us: she was mine and I was hers, in secret, and had been for a year. He used my paintings to get close. Made me watch. Then made me part of it. By fall he had both our bodies and thought that was all of us. It wasn't — and the part he never reached is why we'll never get out.

By the time the leaves were down and the yards had gone to mud, it had all folded back into ordinary — the way the worst things do, once the world has decided not to look at them.

School went on. The block went on. There was a hum out there, the whole ordinary racket of the world — homework and pep rallies and my mother’s headlights swinging into our drive at nine, the TV going through the wall to nobody — and it ran on the far side of the glass from me and meant nothing and couldn’t get in. I moved through it the way you move through weather. None of it touched the thing I lived in now.

Cass was showing by the end of October. Not much — a softness low in her, a new care in the way she sat down — but I’d known that body longer than my own, and I saw it before anyone. Her father saw it and was delighted. He told the neighbors his girl had gone and gotten herself in a spot over the summer, some boy, said it rueful and warm, a good man standing by his kid, and the neighbors clucked and brought casseroles and thought the better of him for it. Nobody asked the first question. Nobody ever does, with a man like that.

Mine hadn’t caught up to me on the outside yet. I was still flat, still able to pass, and I’d already built my own version of his boy for when I couldn’t — a name, a party, a mistake, the whole tidy little lie standing ready. My parents hadn’t noticed a thing, which was the least surprising fact of my life.

“They’ll figure it out eventually,” I said to Cass one night. My mom, my dad, the school, somebody. I meant it as the dread it was. But somewhere down under the dread there was a splinter of something else, and she heard it before I did, because she always did.

“You think if they find out, something happens.” Not a question.

I didn’t answer, which was answering.

“Nothing happens, June.” She said it gently, from the far side of already knowing. “They find out, and your mom cries, and my dad’s over there inside the hour being the nicest man on the street, and by the end of it they’re grateful he’s around to help. He’s good at this. It doesn’t crack anything open.” Her hand found mine in the dark. “There’s no out to it. I looked. There’s him, and there’s us, and everything else out there is just noise.”

So we quit looking for the door. There wasn’t one, and hunting for it only wore you down, and there were better things to do with the little he left us.

The nights in her room were the biggest part of it. Most nights we came to it already wrung out — straight down the hall from his room, both of us still leaking what he’d left in us — too used-up for much beyond her back to my front and my hand on the low warm curve of her that was going to be a person. But some nights, not many, we got the real thing back for a while. Us.

It came back on a night neither of us could sleep. We were lying nose to nose in the dark, her belly a warm fact between us, and out of nowhere she said, “You know what I keep thinking about.”

The old opener. I braced for it to hurt, the way everything she’d started that way had hurt for months.

“All that time we spent being so superior about it,” she said. “Boys. The equipment. One trick, remember. Not even the headline.” A beat — her timing still perfect, still hers. “Turns out it was the whole story.”

And I laughed.

It came up out of me before I could stop it, a real one, the first in longer than I could have told you — awful and helpless and true, because it was true: the two of us who’d been so sure we were above the whole stupid business, lying here knocked up by the same man, and only Cass in all the world could have gone and found the joke in that, and she had, she’d reached down into the worst thing that had ever happened to either of us and come up with it and handed it to me — and this time, after every dropped plate since her birthday, after all the months I couldn’t catch what she threw, it caught. It finally caught. She was laughing too, both of us shaking with it, quiet so he wouldn’t hear, her hand flying up over her own mouth and then over mine — and for a minute, one whole minute, there was no summer and no studio and no him and no babies. There were just the two girls who used to lie in this bed and laugh at the entire world from inside the only thing either of them had ever needed.

Then it wore itself down the way laughing does, and her hand went soft over mine, and I lay there in the quiet after with my eyes open.

Because I knew what it was, even while I was still inside it. I knew everything now, all the way to the bottom, always a beat too late to be any use. That laugh was the best thing I had left, and it was the whole size of the world I was going to get to have: two girls in a narrow bed, in the one room he’d decided to let us keep, laughing soft so the man who owned the house wouldn’t hear how much of us was still alive in here. It was the one thing he never got. He’d taken the studio and the birthday and both our bodies and the two lives starting up inside us that we hadn’t asked for and were going to love anyway — and he never once got that. That was the grace. It was also the bars. They’d been the same thing for a while now.
