She was at the stove in one of my shirts and nothing else. The hem hit the tops of her thighs. Coffee was already poured. Toast had gone a little too dark, which was how she had always made it at home, as if she did not trust bread until it had suffered.
“Sit,” she said without turning around. “If you hover I will burn the eggs on purpose.”
I sat. My kitchen looked like someone else’s kitchen with her in it. That should have scared me more than it did.
We ate. The first minutes were shy in a way last night had not been — forks, glances, the ordinary noise of plates. Then she set her mug down and said, “I’ve been with Stacy since winter.”
I waited.
“Not dating. Not exactly. Her parents would lose their minds. We just ... started. After a sleepover that stopped being a sleepover. She’s the first girl I ever touched. The first person, really, that I wanted.” Allie looked at me over the rim of the mug. “I figured out I was gay and then I figured out I had been thinking about you since before I had words for it. I didn’t come here to make you do anything. I came because I missed you. The rest happened because I wanted it. I still want it.”
“I was going to tell you about Cathy this week,” I said. “That I’m gay. That I hadn’t told Mom and Dad yet.” I almost laughed. “I had a speech. It did not include a strap-on.”
“We can still do the speech if you want. I’ll pretend to be surprised.”
“Don’t you dare.”
She reached across the table and took my hand. Her palm was warm from the mug.
“If you need last night to be a one-time insane thing,” she said, “I can try. I won’t be good at it.”
“I don’t want it to be one time.”
The smile she gave me then was not the airport smile. It was quieter. Older.
We did not leave the apartment that day. I cancelled the museum. I cancelled the walk. I left a message for my advisor that I had a family visit and would miss Thursday’s seminar. Allie borrowed a pair of my shorts and we did dishes like people playing house, except the playing kept sliding off.
The first time that morning was in the shower, which was too small for two people and therefore perfect. I washed her hair. She washed mine. Then she put her mouth on my breast under the water and I braced both hands on the tile and let her suck until my knees went unreliable. I lifted her against the wall. She wrapped her legs around me. We did not have the harness. We did not need it. I fucked her with three fingers, thumb on her clit, and she came with her face in my neck and my name in her mouth like it had always belonged there. I came from the pressure of her thigh and the sound of her. We used all the hot water. The landlord would have opinions. I did not care.
Afterward we lay on the couch in towels and watched the last forty minutes of Notorious with the sound low. She put her head in my lap the way she had asked to the night before. This time neither of us pretended it was innocent. I combed her damp hair with my fingers. She dozed. I watched Cary Grant and thought about calling our mother and saying Allie had landed safely, which was true, and that everything was fine, which was a different kind of true.
I did not call.
Friday we went out because the list still existed and because I wanted, stupidly, to see her in my city in daylight. Coffee in a place with too many students. A bookstore where she bought a cheap paperback and I bought nothing and we kissed between the stacks until a clerk cleared his throat. We bought her a nightgown that actually fit. She wore it for eleven minutes that night and then took it off and dropped it on the floor and said, “I didn’t fly three thousand miles to be modest.”
That night I ate her on the kitchen table because she sat on it to steal olives from a jar and I could not walk past her. I pulled her hips to the edge and put her feet on my shoulders and licked her until she shook apart with a hand over her own mouth. Then she slid down, turned me, and returned the favor on the same wood, messy and laughing when a fork hit the floor. We never made it to the bed until after midnight. The harness stayed in the closet. Hands and mouths were enough. When we finally slept she was half on top of me, one breast against my ribs, and I thought: this is what people mean when they say they could get used to something.
Saturday the heat broke. We walked along the canal and ate bad pizza on a bench and she told me about applying to schools, about not wanting to stay in San Mateo just because it was easy, about Stacy, who knew Allie was visiting her sister and did not know the rest.
“Are you going to tell her?” I asked.
