Chapter 17

Romance Sex Story: Chapter 17 - After the car accident, sisters Sarah (23) and Allie (14) leave Catalpa for a Gainesville bungalow and a life they cannot put on an application. They tell the street they are orphans sharing a house for school. They tell each other the truth. Aunt Judith drives the same highway and almost asks. Campus never does. What they keep behind a new deadbolt is a marriage without a courthouse.

Thursday had been on the fridge in Allie’s handwriting since the cereal meeting: drinking.

Maya had asked, in the group chat Allie showed me with an eyeroll, whether drinking meant pitchers. Allie had typed family night and muted the thread. That was the public word. The private word was: I would be home. I would not be a bench. She would not have to ask like she was applying for a grant.

I left the lab at four-thirty because a blocked night that starts at nine is a night you already sold. The PI lifted two fingers. Fine. Mateo was at the far bench and did not ask again. I had already given him the only sentence he needed.

Allie was in the kitchen in one of my shirts and very little else, which was not a strategy so much as a climate.

“You’re early,” she said.

“That’s the point of a holiday.”

“Rabbit holiday.”

“House holiday. You just live here.”

She hooked my wrist, birth-hold, and I didn’t drop it. The curtains were doing their one job. 8th Avenue could walk itself.

We ate standing up because sitting felt like postponing. Leftover pasta. The pie tin still on the counter, unused, Judith’s relic. Allie pointed at it with her fork.

“One day we’re going to have to bake or admit we’re only daughters when she’s looking.”

“Not tonight.”

“Good. Tonight is not pie.”

Phones went face-down on the island. Hers first. Mine after I sent Judith nothing, because Sunday was Sunday and this was Thursday. Gerald clicked off. The pool filter made its new expensive sound in the yard. Ordinary house. Protected night.

“Two or three,” Allie said, counting like a smartass. “Midweek happened. This is the locked one. Sunday we can argue later.”

“You’re doing minutes during dinner.”

“I’m horny enough for both of us. Somebody has to keep the books.”

I laughed into the pasta. “That’s the compromise. Not a ration. You don’t have to be a weather system I hide from. I just had to put it on a calendar so I wouldn’t give the night to a gel.”

“Come here, then.”

We didn’t make it to choreography in the hall. I had her against the fridge half a minute later, my shirt pushed up, her mouth already impatient. She was fourteen and built like a yes. I was twenty-three and finally not performing for an aunt or a nine o’clock. That was all the help the evening needed.

“Bed,” I said.

“Tyrant.”

“Hydrated.”

The king had two chargers and no audience. Allie pulled the shirt off and knelt up like she’d been thinking about this since the cereal spoon. I put my mouth on her first because she had been the pulse all week and because I like her inconvenient. She fisted the quilt from Catalpa and then remembered she could be loud. She was loud. The windows were windows. Gainesville did not get a vote.

When she came the first time she laughed, wrecked and pleased. “That’s one for the minutes.”

“We are not keeping minutes with my mouth on you.”

“Speak for yourself.”

She pushed me onto my back and paid attention like she’d been insulted by every night I’d had a headache. Hands, mouth, the unhurried version, the one that said I live here instead of please. I let her. I did not ration the sound I made. After, she wiped her mouth on my thigh like a heathen and looked proud.

“Still not a dummy.”

“Still not a rabbit,” I said, which was a lie in the specific and a truth in the treaty.

We lay there long enough for the fan to click its third click. Allie traced the scar on my hip from the jungle gym, the same map she’d known before Georgetown taught it a second language.

“You know what I like about Thursday,” she said.

“The branding.”
