Chapter 12: Two More Beds

Romance Sex Story: Chapter 12: Two More Beds - After the car accident, sisters Sarah (23) and Allie (14) leave Catalpa for a Gainesville bungalow and a life they cannot put on an application. They tell the street they are orphans sharing a house for school. They tell each other the truth. Aunt Judith drives the same highway and almost asks. Campus never does. What they keep behind a new deadbolt is a marriage without a courthouse.

It was Sarah who said it, standing in the doorway of the small room they’d been calling an office.

“We need two more beds.”

Allie was on the floor with a laptop charger and a bag of curtain hooks. “For who.”

“Aunt Judith.” Sarah didn’t dress it up. “She already texted. ‘Checking on you girls before the semester gets crazy.’ That’s two weeks of warning if we’re lucky. One if we’re not.”

Allie sat back on her heels. The king in the master was still the only bed in the house. The office had a desk and a chair. The third bedroom had a lamp and good intentions.

“So we pretend I sleep in here.”

“We pretend we both have rooms,” Sarah said. “And there’s a guest room. That’s what sisters who inherited a bungalow look like. Not one mattress and a harness under it.”

Allie flushed, then tried to make it a joke. “You’re the mommy. You should’ve thought of that when we ordered the first one.”

Sarah’s mouth twitched. “I was busy cooking.”

They ordered that night on Sarah’s laptop at the kitchen table. Two full beds, cheap frames, decent mattresses, express again. One for the small bedroom. One for the third room they’d keep made up and untouched, like a stage set. Extra sheets. A second dresser from the same site so Allie’s clothes weren’t all in Sarah’s drawers when Judith opened the wrong door.

Allie watched the confirmation email land.

“She’s going to know anyway.”

“She doesn’t get to know.” Sarah closed the laptop. “She gets a tour and coffee and the story about how we split the house because we’re adults and we grieve differently. She does not get the truth.”

Allie stood, restless. “House first.”

“Yes.”

“And when the beds get here we don’t christen those.”

Sarah looked at her for a long second. “Those beds are for Judith. This one—” she tipped her head toward the master—”is still ours. After the boxes are broken down. After I say so.”

Allie hated how that worked on her. She also didn’t argue.
