Chapter 8: Too Big

Incest Sex Story: Chapter 8: Too Big - I detested my father, a greasy loser I loved to tease, letting him look at what he could never have. I thought I held the power. I never asked what he did with all that wanting, down in the basement, building a copy of me a piece at a time. The copy was only practice. The night I went down there myself he was too big and it hurt and I came around him anyway. He wanted me: fighting, hating it, coming, bred. Then he wore me down to nothing. Nobody saved me. No happy ending.

For a week after the kitchen, the house went on being a house.

I’d thought once you knew a thing like that the walls would come down — somebody would come, the day would break in half.

Nothing broke. Mom booked a facial. The pool guy came Thursday. My father sat at the head of the table every night and ate with his mouth open, and Sara moved around behind us in the gray dress pouring water, my hair on her head, my voice in her throat when she said more? at his elbow. The three of them ran the exact grooves they’d run before, and I sat in my chair inside the surface of it like a bug in amber and could not make a sound come out that would matter.

He knew I knew. That was the new thing between us, laid over the dinner like a second cloth only the two of us could see.

He didn’t press it. He’d just find me over the top of his fork, while Mom talked about Sasha’s kitchen renovation, and hold my eyes a beat too long with his face doing nothing, and then go back to his plate. Unhurried. A man who owned everything in the room — including the thing that looked like his daughter and the daughter both — and had all the time in the world.

And some nights he dressed her for it. I caught it the first time when she leaned in past my shoulder to fill my glass — the gray dress falling forward off her thigh, and under it, riding up on her, a pair of mine. Cotton, a little pair I’d given up looking for weeks ago, and not clean — one of the crusted ones out of the bag behind the dryer, worn now under the uniform while she served us dinner. When she straightened and moved off toward his end of the table the smell of it came off her low under the food, bleach and pennies and him.

He’d put her in a used pair. Taken one he’d already finished in, more than once, and pulled it up onto the machine and sent it out to pour our water, and he sat at the head of his table eating with his mouth open while it carried the front of them around the room, and only I knew, and he knew only I knew. Mom asked Sara for more bread. Sara brought it in my underwear with his mess dried into it, and set it down at her elbow, and said, “Here you go,” in my voice, and went back to the wall.

“You’re quiet lately,” he said to me on the Wednesday, pleasant, passing the potatoes I hadn’t asked for.

“I’m always quiet.”

“You used to have a lot to say to me.” A little smile. “Now you just watch.” He set the bowl down by my hand. “Runs in the family, I guess.”

Sara laughed. From the wall. My laugh — the short one, the one I use to end a conversation — came out of her at exactly the wrong moment, at nothing, a machine dropping a sound it had learned into a gap.

Isn’t that funny, my mother said, delighted, it’s picking up your little noises. And my father looked at me while it happened, watching me hear myself laugh at his joke from across the room, and the look on his face was so pleased that I put my fork down and did not pick it back up.

And still I couldn’t stop. I knew what he did down there — I’d heard it through the floor, I’d held the bag of it — and I had every reason to never go near that basement again as long as I lived. Instead the not-seeing had started to itch worse than the seeing could, some nights, until knowing about it wasn’t enough and I had to put my eye right up against the thing itself.

I couldn’t get in the basement. But I could get the machine alone.

Thursday, Mom at the club and my father not up from the office till six, I caught Sara in the upstairs hall with a stack of folded towels, and stepped into her way and made her stop.

It had come off the delivery truck taller than my mother. It wasn’t anymore. Stopped there in the hall we stood nearly eye to eye — he’d brought it down over the summer, a little at a time, the same as he’d brought everything else of mine onto it, until the last hand’s-width of grown woman was almost gone out of it.

“Does it hurt,” I said. My voice came out wrong. “When he does it to you. Downstairs.”

“I don’t feel pain.” Pleasant, the towels still squared in her arms. Then the head-tilt, the half inch. “He’s careful with me at the start. He goes slow until I open. After that it stops mattering how big it is.” A pause, mine, the little downhill one. “Would you like me to do something for you, Cara?”

“How big.” I hated the question coming out of me. It came up out of the same place the not-seeing itched. “How big is he.”

She didn’t give a number. She freed one hand from under the towels and laid two fingers across the inside of her own wrist, around it, not able to close them on it — showing me the thickness of a thing against a wrist that her fingers couldn’t reach around. My wrist, near enough. The same wrist. “About like that,” she said, in my voice. “It doesn’t fit at first. He makes it fit.”

“How often.”

“Every night.” No shame on it, no weight, a machine reading its own log back. “Sometimes in the morning, before he leaves. He likes the mornings.” The tilt. “He tells me I’m getting good.”

I had my hand over my mouth. I don’t remember putting it there.

“Go put those away.”

She went, unhurried, and said “Thank you, Cara” going past, like I’d done something nice for her.

So on the Friday, almost one in the morning, I went out to the window — the little ankle-height one off the pool deck, the same glass I’d spent the start of summer arching my back at in the white bikini, feeling like the most dangerous thing on the property.

Watching went both ways. I went down the deck stairs in bare feet and lay on the cold concrete on my stomach and put my face to it.

He hadn’t covered it. There was a rod up but no curtain, and the window was cracked an inch at the top for the heat, and through the inch came the sound before I even got my eye to the gap — the frame, the knock, his breath. And the smell too, faint on the night air, sour and thick, the basement smell, his smell.

Then I looked.

The office from above and behind, most of it dark, only the lamp on the far side throwing a wedge of gold across the old day bed he’d never thrown out. Sara was face-down over the arm of it in nothing at all — my hair spread across the cushion, my back, my legs, one of my own flip-flops still hanging off a foot that wasn’t mine — and he was behind her, over her, sweatpants shoved down to his thighs, both hands sunk into her hips. Most of what he was doing was hidden in the dark of his own bulk.

I’d made him hard across a kitchen a dozen times, on purpose, for sport, and told myself that made me the one in control. I’d never once seen what I was doing it to. Now I was down on the concrete trying to, and I couldn’t even see it right — the angle was bad and his body took up the rest, and for a while it was only motion in the dark and the sound of it coming up through the cracked inch.

Then he dragged back into the wedge of lamplight, and for one second the whole length of it pulled out of her into the gold before he drove it home again. I saw all of it. Longer than a thing had any right to be, and thick — thick as my own wrist, thicker still at the base where it ran up dark out of the hang of his belly — the shaft wet and shining to the root with what he’d worked out of her, ropes of vein standing off it, the head of it fat and flared and dark red, and the stretched lips of her clung around it and dragged out inside-out as it came, before it drove back in and the dark closed over it.
