Chapter 5: Missing Things
Incest Sex Story: Chapter 5: Missing Things - I detested my father, a greasy loser I loved to tease, letting him look at what he could never have. I thought I held the power. I never asked what he did with all that wanting, down in the basement, building a copy of me a piece at a time. The copy was only practice. The night I went down there myself he was too big and it hurt and I came around him anyway. He wanted me: fighting, hating it, coming, bred. Then he wore me down to nothing. Nobody saved me. No happy ending.

I found my underwear on Sara on a Saturday.
She was on her knees at the oven cleaning the glass, and the gray dress rode up the backs of her thighs when she reached, and there they were. Black. The little satin bow at the hip. The pair I’d worn under my dress to the Bishop’s spring thing and then torn my closet apart looking for and decided the wash had eaten.
The wash hadn’t eaten them. They were riding up under a maid’s uniform, mine, worn soft the way only your own get worn.
I was across the kitchen with my hand around her upper arm before I’d decided to move — her skin warm and giving under my fingers like real skin — and I hauled her up off her knees.
“Take those off.”
“I’m sorry?” That pleasant nothing, my inflection buried in it. “Which would you—”
“The underwear. My underwear. Off. Now.”
She looked at me the way she looked at everything, like she was fond of me, and reached under the dress with both hands and stepped out of them, one bare foot and then the other, no hurry, no shame, and held them out folded once in her palm.
I didn’t want to touch them. I took them anyway, because leaving them in her hand was worse.
“Would you like me to keep cleaning the oven,” she said.
I tried to tell my mother that afternoon, and I did it wrong. I came at it sideways, the way you come at a mother like mine when the true sentence is too disgusting to say out loud.
“Sara had my underwear on. From my drawer.”
She was at the hall mirror doing her eyes, mouth open the way you hold it for mascara. “The unit wears what it’s given. Your father sets the wardrobe. Things get mixed in the wash.”
“They weren’t mixed in. They were on her. The black ones with the bow.”
She stopped the wand. She looked at me in the mirror, not turning, and something crossed her face and smoothed flat, and when she spoke her voice had gone cool and level, the voice she used to end things.
“Why,” she said, “were you looking up its dress?”
“I wasn’t—”
“Because it sounds to me like you’ve got some kind of thing about that machine.” Back to her lashes. “You’ve been strange since it came. Jealous. It’s not a good look, sweetheart, being jealous of an appliance. It’s a little pathetic. It’s a little him.”
That landed where she aimed it, and I shut up. That night I heard her hand it to him in the kitchen, light, amused, the way she handed him everything about me: “Your daughter thinks the maid’s raiding her lingerie. Dial back whatever you’re doing with the wardrobe, she’s getting ideas.” A pause. The fridge. “She watches everything, that one. Always has.”
Handed off. Over my head, to him, the way she’d handed off every hard thing about me my whole life — the school meetings, the doctor, the period talk she’d outsourced to a folded pamphlet on my bed.
My mother’s whole genius was for never being the one who had to deal with a thing, and I’d spent fourteen years thinking that genius was the most beautiful thing a woman could have, and learning it off her a piece at a time. I’d just handed her the one thing in her life she couldn’t afford to look at, and she’d done the beautiful thing with it.
She’d handed it to the man who made it.
He was on a stepladder at the office door the next morning, putting a second lock above the first.
I stopped at the bottom of the basement stairs and watched him do it — the drill, the new deadbolt going onto the door above the keypad, his shirt come up in the back so the crack of him showed over the sweatpants. I could have gone back up. But I wanted him to know I’d seen, so I stayed, and eventually he felt me there and looked down over his shoulder.
“Two locks now,” I said. “On a laundry room.”
“On my office.” He set another screw. The drill whined. “A man’s allowed a room in his own house.”
“What’s in there that needs two locks.”
“Work.” He came down off the ladder, folded it, stood it against the wall, and turned around wiping his hands. He was close in the narrow hall, the warm sour heat of him filling it. He looked at me straight on, unhurried, and there was nothing in his face you could have pointed to, nothing you could have told anyone.
“You’ve got a lot of questions lately. About my office, about the maid, about the wardrobe.” He said wardrobe soft, and let it sit. “Your mother thinks you’re jealous. I told her you were just curious. You were always curious.”
