Chapter 3: Maintenance

Incest Sex Story: Chapter 3: Maintenance - I detested my father, a greasy loser I loved to tease, letting him look at what he could never have. I thought I held the power. I never asked what he did with all that wanting, down in the basement, building a copy of me a piece at a time. The copy was only practice. The night I went down there myself he was too big and it hurt and I came around him anyway. He wanted me: fighting, hating it, coming, bred. Then he wore me down to nothing. Nobody saved me. No happy ending.

Owen had his hand up the back of my shirt and I could feel him shaking a little, which I liked.

We were in my room with the door shut. Mom was at a lunch that would go until four. Somewhere under the house my father was making the money, and that only made it better — Owen up here where the whole floor was mine, his weight tipping me onto the bed, his mouth on my neck running something all the way down.

“Is this okay,” he kept saying. “Is this—”

“Stop asking.”

He stopped waiting for the answer, which was better. His hand came around and got under my shirt, warm and clumsy, up my ribs, and I arched into it before I decided to, and he made a sound like he’d been holding his breath since he walked in.

I’d run this exact boy up to this exact line a dozen times and stopped him at it, because stopping him was where the power was. But his thumb dragged over my nipple and the power went somewhere. My whole body reached up after his hand.

He shoved my shirt up and put his mouth where his thumb had been, and I got a fistful of his hair and held him there and quit pretending I was doing him a favor.

His hand went lower, over my shorts, the flat of it pressing where I was already going warm and stupid. I opened my knees without being asked, which I’d never done, and he pushed the fabric aside and his fingers were on me and I was wet, humiliatingly wet, and he felt it and groaned and I wanted to die and I wanted him to never stop.

His other hand fumbled at his own waistband.

“No.” I caught it. “Not that.”

“I wasn’t—”

“Owen.” I made him look at me. His pupils were blown black and he was mine, in that second he’d have done anything I said. “Not that. Not yet.”

“Okay,” he breathed. “Whatever you want.”

Whatever you want. I could have lived on those three words. I pulled his hand back where I’d had it and let him finish what he’d started, and when it broke over me the urge came up to sink my teeth into his shoulder — and I didn’t. I pressed the back of my own hand to my mouth and bit down on that instead, hard, riding it out into my own skin so the sound wouldn’t carry through the floor to the basement, because even coming apart under him I wasn’t going to set my teeth in Owen. He never even knew there was a thing there to keep from him.

After, we lay tangled and hot and stupid and he told me I was beautiful like it was a fact he’d just discovered, and I let him believe he’d discovered it. It was good. Clumsy and warm and mine, with the door shut, and nobody had made me do a second of it.

Sara had my hair by Thursday.

I came down for breakfast and stopped on the bottom stair because the back of her head was wrong. The dark was gone. It was lighter now, brown going gold at the ends, longer, loose around her shoulders — almost exactly the color of mine. Not the same. A shade warmer. But close enough that for one whole second, looking at the back of her head bent over the pan, I didn’t know who I was looking at.

My father was at the table eating eggs she’d made him, and he watched me come the rest of the way down, watched me clock it, and he didn’t stop chewing.

“You did her hair,” I said. To him, not to Mom, who was at the island on her phone.

“Changed the color profile.” He forked in more egg. “It was too dark for the light in here. Washed her out.”

“It’s my color.”

“It’s a warmer blond. Yours has more ash.” He said it without a beat, like a man who’d stood in front of a screen with a slider and my head in his mind, matching, and I felt the floor tilt a little. “You’d have to see them side by side.”

“I don’t want to see them side by side.”

“Then don’t.” He wiped his mouth. He was looking at me over the napkin, straight on, easy.

And Sara turned from the stove with a plate held out. “Good morning, Cara,” she said — in a voice that had gotten a little lower that week, a little flatter, a little more like the voice I heard when I talked. She stood there holding the plate between us, my hair swinging forward when she leaned, and neither of them looked away from me.

“I’m not hungry,” I said, and I did not take the plate, and I went back upstairs, and behind me I heard my father say, gently, to the machine, “It’s fine, sweetheart. Set it down. She’ll eat later,” and I stood on the landing with my hand on the rail and made myself keep walking.

I started noticing it everywhere after that, once I’d let myself see the hair. The way she stood at the wall at dinner with her weight cocked on one hip — my stand. The way she pushed a loose piece of hair behind her ear with one finger while she worked — I do that. I’ve done it a hundred times a day my whole life without knowing it, until I watched a machine do it back at me.

She was collecting me a gesture at a time, the way you learn a dance off a video, frame by frame, and she was getting good at it, and nobody in the house thought it was strange except me. Mom thought it was charming. She’s really settling in, she said, watching Sara tuck the hair behind her ear, not hearing herself say it. My father thought it was progress.

I started doing things differently on purpose to throw her — parting my hair on the wrong side, holding my fork in my fist like a little kid — but it didn’t matter. She wasn’t copying today’s me. She was copying the real one, the one underneath, the one I couldn’t stop being just because I’d decided to.

The office locked from the inside after that.
