Chapter 15: The Right Week

Incest Sex Story: Chapter 15: The Right Week - I detested my father, a greasy loser I loved to tease, letting him look at what he could never have. I thought I held the power. I never asked what he did with all that wanting, down in the basement, building a copy of me a piece at a time. The copy was only practice. The night I went down there myself he was too big and it hurt and I came around him anyway. He wanted me: fighting, hating it, coming, bred. Then he wore me down to nothing. Nobody saved me. No happy ending.

He had me the second time before we’d even left the kitchen.

He got his hands to the button of my jeans first, and I stood there in my mother’s clean Saturday light and let him work it open. They were new and tight and they fought him going down, bunching at my thighs, and he grunted and hauled — and in the end I was the one who pushed them the rest of the way down my own legs and stepped out of them, because being wrestled out of them was worse, and I’d already started, that morning, to reach for the easier thing every time. My underwear went after. He kicked the pile aside.

Then he bent me over the table where he’d made the eggs, my cheek down in the crumbs of my own uneaten breakfast, and stood in behind me and looked me over in the flat morning light, down at what he’d done the night before. He put a thumb to the swollen wrecked lips of me and spread them and made a low pleased sound. “Barely shut overnight,” he said, mostly to himself. “Stretched you right out, didn’t I.” He ran the thumb along the puffed inner lips where they hung out past the outer ones, dragged loose and not gone back, and rolled one between his fingers, weighing it. “Keep taking me the way you’ve been taking me,” he said, and gave it a little tug, “you’ll have a proper set of meat curtains on you by fall.” I didn’t know the words for it. But the way he turned it in his fingers, pleased, like something he was growing on purpose, I didn’t need to — I knew it was ugly and I knew he wanted it, the way another father might want an inch of height on his kid by September.

He didn’t straighten me up. I heard him shove his sweatpants down behind me — not all the way, just off his hips — and his hands closed on my hips and the fat blunt head of him pushed up against me. And ruined as I was, worn open the way he’d just finished gloating about, it still didn’t fit easy. He was still too big. The torn place of me had to give and give around him going in, burning the whole way, and behind me he grunted at how tight it still went. “Christ,” he breathed, pleased, working it deeper. “Wear you out every day and you still grip like that.”

He took me the way he took the doll — from behind, bent over, a thing he didn’t have to look in the face — and the doll was folded up out in the pool house where I’d hidden it, no use to him now that he had the real one over his own breakfast table. And this was the one mercy in it, the one I hated for being a mercy at all: facing away, I didn’t have to see it go into me, or watch his face do what it did, or breathe the worst of him in with my face an inch from his chest. Facing away, I could leave.

That was what I found out that morning. I could leave. Not the room — there was no leaving the room — but I could go back behind my own eyes, the way I’d drilled the stillness in the mirror, and let the body he was using do the being-used without me in it. There was a smear of dried yolk on the table an inch from my face, and I stayed with the yolk, and I let him have the rest.

He finished in me, deep, and none of it pulled back — no sleeve, just me. When I went to get up off the table and clean myself out, he said, “Leave it. You don’t wash me out this week.” So I left it. I got up and pulled my underwear back on over the leaking mess of me and didn’t bother with the jeans — wrestling those back up my legs was more than I had in me. He never laid a hand on me to make me keep his mess in all morning. That part I’d already started doing myself. “Eat something,” he said. “You’re getting thin.”

The weekend went like that.

He didn’t keep to the nights anymore. The nights had been for my mother — the doorway, the line about the updates, the whole ritual staged for a woman who wanted to be lied to. She was in Napa, so the staging was gone, and without it there was just a man doing what he wanted to a girl who couldn’t stop him, whenever it crossed his mind to. Morning. Afternoon. Twice in the blue light of a movie neither of us was watching. He’d get the wet slow look, or not even bother with the look, just take me by the wrist, and I learned to go where the wrist went and put myself away until it was finished.

I stopped counting. I’d counted his updates all summer, timed them, made a whole science of the man — and there was nothing to count now, no schedule to crack, just him and me and a house with nobody else in it. By Saturday night I couldn’t have said how many. I’d stopped being the girl who kept track of things. I was turning into the other kind, the kind that waits, and I could feel it happening from somewhere far off and couldn’t find the part of me that was supposed to fight it.

My phone kept lighting up on the nightstand all weekend — the old life running on without me. Maya, asking was I coming to Dahlia’s on Saturday. Somebody’s story from a party I’d have run two weeks ago, deciding with one look who mattered in that room and who didn’t. A helloooo where ARE you. I lay on my bed in the gaps between him coming for me and watched them stack up, and I could not make my hand reach for it. There was nothing left in me to put in a text back. The girl who’d have known exactly what to say — the one who walked into a room and owned it before she’d said a word — she wasn’t gone. She was just folded away somewhere I couldn’t get to anymore, waiting in the dark, the same as the thing out in the pool house.

Before I ever went to him for a pill, I tried the simple thing. I still had the strip of condoms in my nightstand — I’d bought them back in the spring, for Owen, in the version of my life where I was the one who decided what happened to me, and they’d sat there unopened ever since. So one of those first nights I had one ready in my fist, and when he came in and shoved my legs open I held it up between us in the dark. “Wear this. Please. Just wear a condom, that’s all — then none of it matters.”

He took the little foil square off my palm and held it up to the light and laughed, delighted, like I’d done a trick for him. “A raincoat,” he said. “To fuck my own daughter.” He folded my fingers shut over it, gentle, and pressed my fist back against my chest. “No. I’ve told you what I’m for. Keep your boy’s balloons.” And he put it in me bare, the way he always would and always meant to, because the whole point of me was that there was nothing at all between us.

Which left the pill. I asked him for it on Saturday.

Not the every-day kind. I’d never had that, never needed it — no one on earth had ever once thought a girl like me would want protecting from her own father. I meant the other kind. The morning-after kind, the one you take when it’s already happened and you’re trying to keep it from taking. And it ran on a clock — that was the part nobody told you until you were the one counting. Three days, more or less, and every hour inside those three days it worked a little worse than the hour before, and after them it didn’t work at all. He’d finished in me the first time on Thursday night; by the Saturday I finally made myself ask, most of what the clock would ever give me was already spent. And I had no car, no money, and no phone he didn’t go through — so there was exactly one road to a pharmacy in time, and it ran through him.

I did it flat, in the kitchen, like it was nothing, the way my mother asked for things. “I need you to get me something from the drugstore. Today — it can’t wait.” I made myself say all of it. “Plan B. The morning-after pill. You’ve been finishing in me and I don’t want to be pregnant.”

I’d braced for the no. For the smile and the little speech about how he’d been aiming, how he wanted me full of him. What I got was worse.

He got up without a word and went to the drawer under the microwave where my mother kept the takeout menus, and he took out a small pink-and-white box and set it on the counter in front of me. Plan B. The real thing, still in its pharmacy bag, bought and waiting. He’d already had it. He’d gone and gotten it sometime ahead of me, before I’d even worked out that I’d have to ask.

“You mean this,” he said.

And something came up in my chest that I hadn’t felt in days, something with wings in it, because there it was on the counter, the way out, an arm’s length off — “You can have it,” he said, and laid two fingers on the box and drew it a half inch back toward himself. “You just have to earn it.”

I knew what earning meant before he said the rest. I’d known the second he touched the box.

“On your knees.” Easy, like asking me to pass the salt, already working the string of his sweatpants loose. “Let’s see how bad you want it.”

So I got down on my mother’s kitchen floor in front of my father, and I earned it.

It was the first time he’d put it in my mouth, and up close it was every filthy thing I’d spent all summer not letting myself picture off the sleeve and the bag. The uncut hood of him, the loose slide of skin, and packed up under it thick and pale and cheesy, the same stuff I’d found dried on my own underwear and heaved over in the basement — right under my nose now, ripe and warm, no floor between me and it anymore.
