By the second week, she had stopped flinching when he reached for her hand.
It had startled her the first time — not unpleasantly, just entirely unprepared for, the ordinary weight of his fingers closing around hers as they walked along the river one evening after dinner, warm and dry and steady, nothing like the clammy, hesitant grip of the few boys who’d tried, over the years, to hold her hand and been let go of within a block. She’d looked down at their joined hands for a long moment, quiet, and he hadn’t asked what she was thinking. He’d simply let her look, and kept walking, and let the silence be as long as she needed it to be.
By the third week, she had learned the comfort of his arm around her shoulders on the walk back to her apartment — not possessive, not performing anything for anyone who might see them, just present, a steady weight she found herself leaning into more each time, until leaning into it stopped feeling like something she needed permission for.
The first kiss came in the fourth week, on her doorstep, neither of them planning it. She had been laughing at something he’d said — something small, forgettable, the kind of easy joke that had become ordinary between them faster than she’d thought possible — and he’d looked at her in the porch light with an expression she hadn’t yet learned the name of, and reached up to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, and she had gone very still, waiting, wanting, in a way she had never once let herself want anything in public before.
He kissed her carefully. Slowly. As if he had all the time that existed and intended to spend every second of it proving that to her.
She kissed him back before she’d decided to, both hands coming up to rest against his chest, feeling his heart beating there — steady, real, hers to listen to now — and when they finally broke apart she was breathless in a way that had nothing to do with exertion and everything to do with twenty-three years of never once having been kissed like she mattered.
“I’ve been wanting to do that since the airport,” he admitted, quiet, his forehead resting against hers.
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because I wanted you to be ready for it. Not swept into it.” He drew back just enough to look at her properly. “There’s a difference, and I promised myself I’d know it when I saw it.”
The months that followed built on that first evening, deepening the way real intimacy deepens — not through any single dramatic leap, but through the accumulation of small permissions, each one a little further than the last. She learned the weight of falling asleep against his shoulder on a slow ferry ride, his arm tightening around her without either of them commenting on it. She learned what it felt like to be kissed awake instead of merely greeted, to have a hand find the small of her back in a crowded market without her having to ask for it, to be pulled close on a park bench simply because he wanted her near him and had stopped waiting for a reason.
There were nights — more of them than she would have admitted to anyone but herself — when the wanting became something harder to hold steady. A late evening on his hotel balcony, his hands warm at her waist, her back against the railing, the kiss deepening into something that made her pulse hammer and her breath go short and her whole body ache with a hunger she had spent years pretending not to have.
“I want you to know,” he said once, low, his mouth against her temple, both of them still catching their breath after pulling apart, “that this isn’t easy for me either.”
“Does it get easier?” she asked, half laughing, half genuinely unsure she wanted the honest answer.
“No,” he said, and kissed her forehead instead of her mouth. “But you’re worth it being hard.”
She had never, in her whole life, had anyone tell her that patience for her was worth the difficulty of it. She carried that sentence with her for days afterward, turning it over the way she turned over everything, and found that unlike almost every other thing she’d ever been told about her own worth, this one didn’t come with a hidden condition attached.
There was a night, in the second month, when she finally said something about it.
They had spent the evening on her couch, some romantic film neither of them was really watching by the second act, and the kissing that followed felt, at first, like every other night. But something in her had been building for weeks, some quiet frustration she hadn’t let herself name until she was lying half beneath him in the dark, his mouth against her throat.
“Josh.” She said his name plainly enough that he stilled immediately, propping himself up to look at her. “Do you love me?”
“I adore you.” He said it without hesitation, brushing a strand of hair back from her face. “You know that.”
“Do you find me desirable?”
“My God, yes.” Something rough entered his voice, an honesty he usually kept carefully leashed.
“Then why haven’t you touched me?” She sat up slightly, meeting his eyes, done pretending the question didn’t matter to her. “I’m not fine china, Josh. I’m not going to break.”
He was quiet a moment, and when he answered, there was something almost pained in it. “I feel like Atlas some nights. Carrying the whole weight of holding back, just to keep from ravaging you the second we’re alone.”
“Then stop carrying it,” she said, softer now. “Just for tonight.”
She reached for his hand where it rested at her waist and moved it, deliberate, unhurried, to her breast — and felt him go very still beneath her palm, felt the breath leave him in something between a groan and a laugh of pure relief, as if some permission he’d been waiting for without knowing he was waiting had finally arrived.
Then she leaned up and kissed him, and this time, when his hand tightened and his mouth grew less careful, she didn’t feel him pulling back at all.
“Better?” she murmured, some time later, breathless, her forehead against his.
“Better,” he said, low, and there was real relief in it. “I was so afraid of taking too much from you that I forgot I was allowed to take anything at all.”
