The test remained on the bathroom counter long after Emiko and Kaito had stopped looking at it.

Neither of them had gone back to bed.

They sat instead at the kitchen table in their sleep clothes, hands around cups of tea that had cooled before either of them drank much. Outside the window, dawn softened the buildings across the street. Inside, the apartment was still. Hana and Midori had not yet woken.

Kaito looked toward the bathroom for the third time.

“It’s still there,” Emiko said softly.

“I know.”

“You can look again if you need to.”

He gave a breathless little laugh. “I might.”

Emiko reached across the table and laid her hand over his.

They had wanted this. They had planned as carefully as anyone could plan for something that could not be commanded. They had watched the calendar, trusted the small signs, and tried not to turn hope into a demand.

Now hope sat in the bathroom in the shape of two clear lines.

“We should tell them,” Kaito said.

Emiko nodded.

“Hana and Midori?”

“Together.”

“Now?”

“Not before they’ve had coffee.”

Kaito smiled. “That’s fair.”

A door opened down the hall.

Hana appeared first, wrapped in a light robe, her hair loose around her shoulders. She stopped when she saw them at the table.

“You’re both up early.”

Emiko smiled too quickly. “Couldn’t sleep.”

Hana’s eyes moved between them. She knew them well enough to recognize a secret, but she did not pry.

“Everything okay?”

“Yes,” Emiko said.

Kaito looked at her.

Emiko corrected herself. “More than okay.”

Hana’s expression softened, though she said nothing.

“I’ll make breakfast,” she said.

“You don’t have to,” Emiko told her.

“I know.”

A few minutes later, Midori came into the kitchen with one sock on and her phone in her hand.

“Why is everybody awake?” she asked.

“No reason,” Kaito said.

Midori stopped.

“That is definitely a reason.”

“It’s a normal morning.”

“You’re smiling.”

“I smile.”

“Not before breakfast.”

Kaito immediately stopped smiling.

Midori pointed at him. “See?”

Breakfast assembled itself in familiar pieces: toast, eggs, cut fruit, tea. Hana moved around the kitchen quietly. Midori sat down and kept looking at Emiko and Kaito as if she expected one of them to burst into song.

Emiko could barely eat. The smell of the eggs turned her stomach, and she pushed a piece of toast around her plate.

Midori noticed first.

“You’re not eating.”

“I’m eating.”

“You’re moving food.”

“That counts.”

“It does not.”

Hana glanced at Emiko. “Are you feeling all right?”

Emiko looked at Kaito.

He gave the smallest nod.

She set down her fork.

“Hana. Midori.”

Both girls looked up.

Kaito reached across the table and took Emiko’s hand.

“We have something to tell you,” Emiko said.

Midori’s face changed at once.

“What happened?”

“Nothing bad,” Kaito said quickly.

Hana went very still.

Emiko took one slow breath.

“I took a pregnancy test this morning.”

For a second, the room seemed to stop.

Midori blinked.

Hana’s eyes widened.

“And?” Midori asked.

Emiko smiled, though her throat had tightened.

“It was positive.”

Midori stared at her.

“You’re pregnant?”

Emiko nodded.

Midori’s chair scraped backward as she stood. She came around the table in two steps and threw her arms around Emiko.

“Oh,” she whispered. “Oh, Mama.”

Emiko held her close.

Kaito laughed softly, but the sound was unsteady.

Hana had not moved yet. Tears had gathered in her eyes, though she was smiling in a way that made her whole face gentler.

“A baby,” Hana said.

Kaito looked down at their joined hands. “That’s what the test says.”

Hana stood and came around the table. She touched Emiko’s cheek before she hugged her.

“A baby,” she said again.

For a moment, all four of them were gathered together in the kitchen. The toast went cold. The tea cooled. Morning filled the windows, but no one looked outside.
