Morning came too quickly.
Hana woke before her alarm and lay still for a few minutes, looking at the pale rectangle of light on the ceiling.
Her remote conference test was not until late morning. She had checked the time twice the night before, then once again after getting into bed, as though the appointment might move while she slept.
By seven, she was dressed.
By seven fifteen, she had checked her laptop.
By seven twenty, she had checked the laptop again.
When she came into the kitchen, Kaito was already there.
He stood at the counter with a mug in one hand and a plate in the other, looking more awake than anyone had a right to be.
“You’re early,” Hana said.
“So are you.”
“I have something important.”
“You always have something important.”
Hana narrowed her eyes at him, but she sat down.
Kaito set a plate in front of her: toast, eggs, and fruit arranged with the excessive care he gave to anything intended to help someone.
“I’m not hungry,” she said.
“You should eat anyway.”
“I know.”
She picked up a piece of toast and took a dutiful bite.
A few minutes later, Emiko entered the kitchen. She wore soft clothes instead of the dark blouse and jacket from the night before, her hair loosely tied back. The Hopkins call had ended well, but Hana could see that her mother was still carrying it somewhere behind her eyes.
Emiko paused beside Hana’s chair.
“Your conference starts at eleven?”
“Eleven thirty.”
“And you have your identification?”
Hana lifted the folder beside her.
“Your notes?”
“Beside the computer.”
“Your connection?”
“Kaito tested it twice.”
Kaito looked up from his mug. “Three times.”
Hana exhaled through her nose.
“Three times,” she corrected.
Midori came in a moment later, still half asleep and wrapped in a loose cardigan.
Emiko looked up from the kettle. “Hey, sleepy head. Too much playtime last night?”
Midori paused in the doorway, blinking.
“I was not playing.”
Hana looked over. “What were you doing, then?”
Midori pulled out a chair and sat down with exaggerated dignity.
“Important research.”
Kaito glanced at her. “At two in the morning?”
“That is when research is most important.”
Emiko’s mouth moved slightly, almost a smile.
“Then your research can wait until after breakfast.”
“Are we doing the serious breakfast?” she asked.
“No,” Hana said.
“Yes,” Kaito said at the same time.
Midori looked between them.
“Then I will be quiet,” she announced.
No one believed her.
By ten forty-five, Hana’s room had become too clean.
The desk was clear except for her laptop, charger, headphones, notebook, identification, and the glass of water positioned safely on the far side of the room. Her hair had been brushed twice. Her camera angle showed a plain wall, the edge of a bookshelf, and none of the laundry basket she had shoved behind the door.
Kaito stood just outside, holding the small extension cable he had brought from the living room.
“You ddon’t need this,” Hana said.
“It’s a backup.”
“The charger is connected.”
“Yes.”
“Then why do I need a backup?”
“Because you have something important.”
Hana looked at him.
For a second, she wanted to say that this was exactly the kind of thing that made her feel more nervous. Instead, she took the cable from him.
“Thank you,” she said.
Kaito nodded once.
Then Midori appeared over his shoulder.
“You look nice.”
Hana blinked.
“What?”
“You look nice,” Midori repeated. “Not like you are trying too hard. Just like yourself, but more organized.”
“That is not necessarily a compliment.”
“It is from me.”
Hana tried not to smile.
Emiko came last.
She did not enter immediately. She knocked lightly on the open door, as though Hana’s room had become an office and not the room she had known all her life.
“Hana,” she said.
Hana turned in her chair.
Emiko crossed the room and rested one hand lightly on the desk.
“You have prepared,” she said.
“I know.”
“You don’t have to prove that you deserve to be there.”
Hana’s fingers tightened around the edge of her notebook.
“What if they ask something I do not know?”
“Then you think,” Emiko said. “You answer what you can. You say when you need a moment. You do not invent certainty because you are afraid of silence.”
Hana nodded.
“What if I do badly?”
Emiko’s expression softened.
“Then one conference test will not decide who you are.”
Hana looked down.
Her mother waited.
