While we were walking back to the admin building I sent Cindy a text. “At site, almost ready. ETA?” Then, while I was waiting, I sent the same thing to Eric, Margie, Matt, and George. And Doug.
As each replied I sent “Team planning meeting after training?”. Well, not to Doug. Eric was getting ready to come. Margie, Cindy, and Matt said they were on their way, and George didn’t answer for a while. When he did answer, he said “Just left church. On my way soon.”
We got back in the office. It was working on being 9:30. What else needed to be done? What else could be done before 1? Well, I was going to want lunch.
“Mary, do we have any plans to feed the crew?”
“Not that I know of.”
“Okay, I think we should feed everyone who came in early on a Sunday to help out. Is that a ‘Mary’ decision, or is that a ‘Jim’ decision?”
“It’s Jim’s decision to do it. It’s my decision how to do it.”
“Fine. Do you call him, or do I? I’m thinking us five, Jim, Eric, and Mr. Jeffreys. Eight people. So, what’s your favorite restaurant?”
“There’s a Cajun place just down First Avenue North. I don’t think you soft honkies could eat what I’d order, though.”
“Do they have a boring version that us honkies can eat?”
Rick said “There’s a barbecue place on the way that’s pretty good. Just, don’t use their hot sauce.”
Mary said “Go get two of their family meals, and bring some of their hot sauce for me.”
I told them “Make it three of them, and I’ll pay for the third one for my team. I asked them to come early in case we needed their help so I should feed them.”
Mary called Jim to tell him what he’d authorized and he approved it, telling her that we should have the food back at the pavilion by noon. Someone would have to stay in the office, and someone would have to stay out at the street. Maybe earlier would be better. Mary agreed to “Lunch at 11, then. Thanks, boss!”
What else? Payment. “Do we have a cash box with change, or some way to give receipts?”
Dumb looks. “Ron, go find an office supply store, fast. Buy a small cash box and a book with at least a hundred receipts. Try to get some fives so we can break a twenty. And save your receipt so you get paid back.”
“Oh, I have a state credit card for stuff like this.”
“Oh, good. Do I need to give you a couple twenties to turn into fives?”
“No, best to leave it to me. You shouldn’t be doing financial stuff. You’re only a kid, you know.” He said that with a grin so maybe that wasn’t his own opinion, it was an opinion someone had handed him.
Rick went out with him, to let him out. I went with them, to see if I could put the forklift back when he was gone.
Yeah, it was fun. And, while it had power and it could cause a lot of damage, it wasn’t as dangerous as a car. It was built for power, not speed. I mean, it didn’t even have a speedometer so the builder probably wasn’t worried about speeding. My Dad’s car was marked up to 120 MPH. Not that it could go that fast, of course. No, someone told me, don’t remember who.
I got back to the office, and I couldn’t think of anything else I could do. I thought of something I should have done, though. I should have brought the training staff that Mr. Jeffreys had given me to take home. We could run out, and having one more would help.
Besides, I could have gotten Ron to cut mine down some. 8 feet was too long. I was only 5’9”, although I was still growing. I’d been 5’8” at the beginning of the summer. I thought I should try 7’ even and see how it worked. I could always shorten it some more, right? And I might grow into it.
I really wanted to go exploring. When I’d been looking at the satellite photos on the ‘net, I’d zoomed in until the ‘200 feet’ bar on my screen was as close to an inch on my ruler as I could get. Then, it was easy to measure how many inches from here to there, etc. I ended up with well over a million square feet. It converted to a little over 33 acres.
And it was just full of old foundry stuff, mill stuff, shops, warehouses, old supplies, and old products. The place wasn’t going to just explore itself, let me tell you! Someone was going to have to do the work.
I needed to stay available, though. My team slowly trickled in. Them, I could release to explore, with a buddy. Dammit.
Sometimes you are minding your own business and you get a delightful surprise. I was delighted, but not surprised, when Cindy bounced in and jumped on me. What was a surprise, but not necessary a delight, was that Sally bounced in right behind Cindy.
After we were done kissing I told Mary that she could mark Cindy Jeffreys off, she was present. Also, she should add Sally Jeffreys, age thirteen, to the ‘paid’ list. If her dad couldn’t afford it I’d pay for her. I’d beat it out of him later. Or just keep her. Oh, if you are keeping track of what we do like ‘fighter’ or ‘mage’, Sally should be listed as ‘troublemaker’.
Their dad came in in time to hear that last. However, he declined to engage, as they say. Man, I had all KINDS of things ready to say if Mary wanted to ‘start something’.
I mean, if she said “Did you really offer to sell your daughter to Mr. McGowan for $5?”, he could reply “No, of course not. Wait, which one are we talking about?”
Then we could get into an argument about how much Cindy was worth. I just couldn’t go any higher than $30. He could point out that she was intelligent, healthy, and had good teeth, and any farmer should be happy to have her pulling his plow. But, I’ve still got to go get my planter fixed. I can’t afford more. Then he could offer to throw Sally into the deal for free if I’d go up to $40.
Alas, he didn’t want to engage. And Mary didn’t start it. I ended up shaking my head. “You guys, you’re no fun. You’re acting like ... adults!”
Mr. Jeffreys nodded. “Yep, we do that sometimes. Someday, maybe you’ll try it, too. I’ve always gotten good results with it.”
“Nah, sounds kinda crazy to me.” Then, to Cindy “Okay, you’ve gotta stay here all day. If you get down, I’ll hafta fight Sally off, and someone might get hurt.”
She nodded and said “M’kay” into my shoulder.
I started walking towards the back hallway, carrying her. “This is awesome. You’re already practicing doing whatever I say for when we’re married.”
Cindy got down, saying “I don’t think it works that way.”
Sally started towards me, but I put my hands out, fingers in a cross. “Stop. My boss has prohibited me from snuggling with you.”
“What? That’s stupid. Who’s your boss?”
I pointed. “Cindy, of course. She gets to tell me what to do.”
Everyone looked at Cindy, who was solemnly nodding her head up and down. She didn’t say it, but I couldn’t help but recall an X-rated comic I’d seen on the internet. It had some schmuck doing silly things for his girlfriend. The caption had her saying “Behold the power of poontang!”
What she said was “You need to find your own boyfriend. I’m not sharing mine.”
“That stinks.”
Rick went out for barbecue about 10:30 and was back soon after 11. Jim made it back with more practice staffs before all the food was gone, but eating was more important. Once we’d made sure there were no leftovers to put away, we moved all the staffs out to the pavilion.
Eric had brought the six he still had, and all added together we had just over a hundred sticks that people could practice with. I told them that THAT was a reasonable reason to cut-off the class size; when we ran out of staffs to practice with we needed to stop taking trainees. More people could watch, though, I guessed.
Margie was there by then, and she pointed out that active hunters should be using their own staffs. Of course! Although, some active hunters -I pointed at Jeff Ostwald- still needed a practice staff unless he wanted to use his real spear. Which wouldn’t be safe, the way we were packed in. He’d brought Doug, who hadn’t gone in a Portal yet so he didn’t have his spear yet. He’d need a staff, too.
Still, the reason we were doing this in the first place was to give all the New Class mages a chance to learn how to defend themselves before going into a Portal.
About noon we started having trainees and their parents start to trickle in, so we had them check in and took them out to the pavilion to select a staff. Well, the trainees. We made the parents stay outside the fence, in the driveway. Which would have been jammed with idiots trying to park, if I hadn’t blocked it at the road. Someone should pat me on the back.
I showed Mr. Jeffreys where I thought he should stand, and when he picked a spot I measured 20 feet past the closest row and painted his own white ‘X’. Then, I told him that my team could be behind him, facing the class and serving as examples of what to do and how to do it, if he wanted. There might be trainees who couldn’t see what he was doing clearly, but surely they could see at least one of us if we were all lined up behind him.
He agreed with that, so I measured another 20 feet past his mark and made another row of spots for us ‘experts’ to stand at. That gave him a little bit of room to move around as he tried to teach and watch all the students. I did ask Sally if she would mind if I pointed her out as learning this faster than me and my team did. She said that was fine.
So, when we finally got started we had Team Newbie along with Jeff, Doug, and Sally behind Mr. Jeffreys. We put all the New Class up front, since they were why we were here, and asked the few older hunters to stand on the back row until we had everyone coming. At that point, they could stay where they were or move up to an empty spot closer to the front.
I got to be the MC, the Master of Ceremonies. I introduced myself and explained how I came to be the head instigator for this training, then had everyone on Team Newbie pull out their weapons and lift them for everyone to see. Well, everyone except Eric, who was out at the forklift with Rick. Mary, Jim, and Ron were in the office sorting out the sheep from the goats.
My team helped everyone select a staff at the pavilion, and before long people were having to choose between ‘what’s left here’ instead of ‘what’s right for me’.
Jim came out long enough for me to introduce him as ALPRA’s Assistant Director for Training “And he’s the one who signs all the checks to make stuff like this happen, so please don’t piss him off.”
Then I introduced Sally, telling everyone that she was only 13, but she had gone to the early training sessions with us, and seemed to be picking it up faster than ‘all us old folks’, so we had her in line with everyone else who could demonstrate what our instructor was saying. After that I introduced Mr. Jeffreys, who had given us enough knowledge in just a couple of sessions that we were far more capable in our last Dive than the one before it, and stepped back to my place in the line.
Mr. Jeffreys went through pretty much the same talk as he had our first time. Maybe it was a little more polished, but it was the same talk. When he wanted to talk about weapon properties, he asked if anyone in the class was a veteran, and used him to help answer the priority list. Reliability, Range, Accuracy, Ease of Training and Use. This time he had Jeff pull out his spear and demonstrate the range difference between that and George’s sword.
Cost was way, way, WAY down the list of priorities. On the battlefield, the best weapon you can get is the one you want, because the cost if you lose the battle is your life. As well as, possibly, the lives of those you’re protecting. If the most expensive weapon you can afford is better -on the battlefield- than one you can easily afford, you get the most expensive one. If the only differences don’t matter on the battlefield, stay with the cheaper one.
In this case, of course, the Portal System would be providing our weapons, so that didn’t matter. All that was left was training to use it as well as possible. With that, he started in with our training.
He would teach some point. Then, he had us all practice it for a few minutes. Then he’d move on to the next thing.
