Synergy is when two factors that work together also each reinforce the other, so together they are far more effective than their effects would be if simply added up. I’m not sure if there’s supposed to be an element of surprise in there, or if it’s something that you should have realized would happen.
As soon as we could see the forest I could tell that our goal was somewhere vaguely in front of us. However, Eric asked Cindy to ‘Bless’ us, and as soon as she did I felt a lot better, of course, but my sense of direction got a lot more focused, too. I hadn’t noticed the connection before.
Now, I could tell that our goal was just a little to our left, while the path in front of us led a little to our right. Also, our goal was probably a little short of a mile away.
I had everyone stop while I described not only what I knew, but also how what I knew had changed with Cindy’s ‘Bless’ spell. No, Cindy isn’t one of our fighters, but she makes us all more effective and powerful in so many ways that it would be insane to replace her with another fighter.
Since we were just standing around wasting time on the ‘Bless’ spell, Eric told us to all check our status and our skills and see if anything else was enhanced that we hadn’t expected. I had all the usual stuff, strength, endurance, pain resistance, yeah, but only three of my four skills got the ‘+1’ added. ‘Mace’, ‘Shield’, and ‘Goal-Oriented’ were all ‘+1’. My ‘Collection’ skill was still at Level 1.
I had my ‘Steadfast’ benefits, too, as long as I was holding my mace. Both my Endurance and my Will Power were +1, so when I was ‘Blessed’ and holding my mace, my Endurance was effectively 10. If I added my next stat point to Endurance to make it 9, would it be 11 when I was ‘Blessed’ and fighting?
Matt and Cindy both reported that their ‘Quarterstaff’ skill was ‘Level 1 (+1=2)’. Matt admitted that he hadn’t even had the ‘Quarterstaff’ skill the last time he’d checked. That had to have come from our training with Cindy’s father and his daily practice at home. Cindy said that she’d noticed it before, but hadn’t thought to ask anyone else about it.
Margie grumped that she didn’t have the ‘Quarterstaff’ skill yet. She clearly needed to actually, you know, pull it out and practice every evening like we all were. On the other hand, both her ‘Throw Fire’ spell AND her ‘Fire Staff’ were enhanced, so whenever she was blessed not only did the spell do more, when she used her staff to throw the spell it got double adds.
Matt added that, yeah, that seemed to be right. Margie’s spell still did more damage than his did, though. It went further and was more accurate, too. Margie smiled and said ‘Practice, practice, practice’. Matt retorted that his Dad got mad when he threw fire in the back yard. And his Mom got really mad when he did it in the house.
Yeah, we needed to get those guys somewhere to practice. Like, maybe, the Birmingham Practice Facility? The place used to be a steel foundry! Surely it had places that wouldn’t be damaged by a couple of lousy fire spells.
“Y’all remind me when we get out, that we need to set aside some time down in Birmingham when you Mages can practice your spells. The place used to be a foundry, so it ought to be able to handle what you guys do.”
I didn’t have the ‘Quarterstaff’ skill yet, either, although I didn’t practice with it every day like Matt and Cindy probably did. And, when I did come up with the time to practice, I put more time into my mace than I did my practice staff. So, sure, I guess I hadn’t earned that level-one skill yet.
Cindy said that, when she was blessed, her healing spell was enhanced. But, she still only had nine Mana, the ‘Heal’ cost three, and the ‘Bless’ cost four. We’d have to run some tests to see if it was better to cast her healing spell three times and then once every twenty minutes as her Mana recovered for as long as needed, or if it was better to ‘Bless’ herself and then cast the healing spell once, wait a few minutes, cast it a second time, and then a third time right before the ‘Bless’ expired.
Thinking about it, I thought that minor wounds would be best taken care of immediately, but something major might benefit from the bless adds. How the hell could we test that? It didn’t occur to me until later that the ‘Bless’ spell might also help people heal on their own. That would also count as doubled adds, if being ‘Blessed’ gave Cindy more healing power as well as letting the injured person heal faster.
We’d spent long enough talking about it that Eric declared a break, to end when the ‘Bless’ expired, the five-minute cool-down was done, and Cindy could cast it again with her full Mana. Then, we’d head down the path looking for trouble.
Meanwhile, we’d all been looking around but we didn’t see anything worth talking about. There was a trail going the way we needed to go, and behind us it went the other direction. Other than that, it was just Mirkwood.
We all felt it when the ‘Bless’ wore off, of course. This time, though, we also felt a general feeling of unease, like we shouldn’t be here. We didn’t belong here, and maybe we should be trying to get OUT of here. It wasn’t that strong and we could all resist it, but it was there.
Margie said it was like a weaker version of the thing the skeletons did. She’d been in a Blue once, down on the other side of Montgomery, and she admitted that she’d failed her ‘terror roll’. She’d been completely useless. Her group had had to take care of her like she was a prisoner, and it had made the whole Portal harder for everyone else. She hadn’t recovered until the last skeleton had been smashed and the rest of the team was searching for loot. It had been HELLA embarrassing.
She’d been a level one Mage at the time, though, and now she was only a few hundred experience away from level three. She wanted to stay with us until we’d all gotten at least one level and then take us back in that same Blue. Meanwhile, she was going to practice with her staff until she could bust all the skeletons’ heads with it.
By the time Margie was done telling us about her first Blue Dive, Cindy had all her Mana back and the ‘Bless’ spell’s cool-down period was over. We all got ready to go.
Eric pointed out that this was NOT a ‘thunder run’. We were NOT making a suicide charge. We wanted to take out SOME of the spiders when we found their nest, but we also wanted to be able to back out of their nest and regroup if we wanted to. So, we wanted to move with purpose so we could fight under the ‘Bless’ as long as possible, but NOT charge blindly into the heart of their nest.
I asked if we should drop our packs where we were, or carry them until we found the nest. Eric thought about that one for a minute, then decided that we would carry them for now, but be ready to drop them fast if needed. If we could, we’d make an organized pile, but we may not have time. Maybe we should all take our packs off and simply carry them, so we could drop them instantly without storing our weapons. “Good question, Sam.”
Eric looked around and asked if we had any other questions or suggestions, but no one else had anything so he told us to take our packs off and be ready to drop them. That took a few seconds, and I ended up slinging it over my shoulder again but holding it with my left hand. That didn’t interfere with my shield at all. I could let go of it and use my shield to block a blow, and my right hand was completely free to use my mace.
George did the same thing. Eric had to carry his humongous axe with his right hand, but he could rest it on his shoulder. All the staffers slung their packs over one shoulder and held their staffs with their free hand. After that, Eric had Cindy ‘Bless’ us and we headed down the trail.
While we were moving Eric admitted that he’d forgotten how often Matt and Margie could throw fire. How much Mana did they have, and how much did it cost each time they threw it? Margie waved at Matt to answer first.
Matt said “I have 7 Mana and my Throw Fire spell takes 3 Mana, so I can throw it twice and then I’ll have to wait about 20 minutes before I can do it again, then half an hour for each time after that.”
Margie said “I had 8 Mana when I was Level 1, so I was the same as Matt. Now I’m Level 2 and my fire is more powerful, but it costs 4 Mana now. I have 19 Mana so I can throw it four times, then once more after a couple of minutes. After that, it’s once every fifteen minutes.”
Eric thought about that for a minute, then said “Okay, what I want is to sneak up on them and burn their whole nest, but that may not happen. So, I think that we should have each of you keep one or two in reserve. So, depending upon what we find, I might ask you both to burn what we find, or I may ask Margie to do it while Matt keeps his Mana. We’ll see.”
We kept heading up the trail and after a couple more minutes Eric slowed down, forcing everyone behind him to stop. “I see some web. We’re getting close. Everyone keep an eye out for something about the size of one of the big boss Raccoons.”
“They won’t weigh as much and they aren’t as fast, but they can jump a lot farther than you expect. They could be up in the trees or down on the ground, and they will try to swamp us with numbers if they can. Matt and Margie, try to not use your fire on individuals if you can help it. We want that for the nest. But, if you have to, you have to.”
Matt asked “Do we really need to carry our packs? There’s nothing in mine that I need while we’re fighting.”
“Actually, no. Anyone else? Let’s drop our packs here while we can, then we’ll be a lot more agile if we have to move fast.”
I thought it was a great idea. My pack didn’t weigh THAT much, but it was awkward. We made a pile right there on the trail and kept moving.
George called out “Movement on the right ahead!” and we pretty much stopped, so Eric called for the battle-line. While I was moving up and left, I got to call out “Movement on the left, ahead!”
George said “I see one spider about 2 o’clock, trying to sneak up on us.”
Eric answered “Wait for it, if you charge in there may be more you don’t see. Is it on the ground or up in the trees?”
I answered that with “I see two at 10 o’clock, both on the ground and sneaking.” George added “Mine is on the ground, still just see one.”
“Wait for them! I want the two of you to take on as many as you can, as you have shields. I’d much rather they try to bite and poison your shields instead of something else. Staffers, if you get attacked just keep them as far away from you as you can. Us front-liners will take them from the side.”
Suddenly the one to my left lunged at me and I didn’t pay any attention to anything else for a few seconds. I lunged too and shoved my shield in its face. It may not have been expecting that, and it reared up, trying to pick me up I guess. Or, maybe, it thought I would fall over on my back.
Nope! I’m the Missile. I home on linebackers. If I can get lower, it’s the linebacker that moves, dammit! I had to smash through a couple of its legs, but that didn’t seem to slow my mace down at all and it smashed through its head, too. The whole think kinda shook, and then went limp. One shot, one kill. Good.
It pulled my shield down with it, dammit. I smashed its head again, and most of it came loose and fell to the ground. Houston, we have GOO! Oh, my God that was messy. I’d read somewhere that spiders, like all arachnids and insects, had open circulatory systems with fluids able to move wherever needed. If you poke a hole in it, all the pressure gets relieved. A whole lot of stuff came out of what was left of its head, and the spider’s body just sort of deflated like a balloon.
It smelled pretty bad, too. If I was a sympathy puker I’d be unloading right now. Still, that was over, and I could look around. Nothing else coming. No one was fighting.
There was a dead spider in front of Eric, and he was just COVERED in goo. Cindy had moved back well behind Eric and looked like she’d been splashed. Margie, between me and Eric and back some, had been spattered some but not that bad. George had another dead spider in front of him and he’d been slimed as well. Matt didn’t look too bad.
