Chapter 9: The Moral Horizon

TenMillionBlades Leader Suspended After Threats Against Reforged Players

Darren “HeyNon” Keane’s latest post appears to have taken one of World of WarMachines’ biggest player feuds across a line most of the gaming community agrees should never have been approached.

By Mara Kessler, GamingChronicles

One of the largest player-driven conflicts in World of WarMachines has spilled well beyond the game following the suspension of Darren “HeyNon” Keane, leader of the prominent TenMillionBlades guild, after he posted violent and sexualized threats directed at members of rival guild Reforged.

The post was removed from Kelto’s official Free-Fire Forums shortly after appearing, and Keane’s account was suspended from further participation. GamingChronicles understands that Keane’s World of WarMachines account has also been suspended indefinitely.

The incident comes after weeks of increasingly bitter conflict between TenMillionBlades and Reforged, both inside World of WarMachines’ persistent Universe at War campaign and on the game’s official community forums.

For anyone who has not been following what players have dubbed “the Crusade,” the short version is that TenMillionBlades launched a major invasion of Reforged territory following its defeat at the recent End of Summer Showdown tournament.

Things did not go according to plan. Reforged first raided TenMillionBlades’ lightly defended home territories, stripping stockpiles and selling several captured worlds to neighboring guilds. It then began an extended guerrilla campaign, jokingly renamed “Gorilla Warfare,” against the invading Blade forces. The campaign has since generated everything from gorilla-themed merchandise to virtual real estate advertisements mocking the loss of Blade territory. Until now, however, almost all of it remained recognizably within the realm of competitive gaming trash talk.

That changed after the latest major Blade defeat. Keane posted a message directed at former professional champion Adrian “ThunderRoad” Mercer and Reforged field commander Amy “A-Bombadier” Williamson. The message included a threat involving Mercer’s death and an explicitly sexual threat directed toward Williamson.

GamingChronicles will not reproduce the post in full.

Kelto moderators removed it and suspended Keane shortly afterward.

“It wasn’t even close”

The Free-Fire Forums are not known for gentle conversation. Profanity, insults, aggressive boasting and deliberately provocative trash talk have been part of the forum culture for years. Kelto historically allows considerably more latitude there than on the company’s general community boards. That history has already led to predictable complaints about Keane’s suspension.

Several of the usual suspects have argued that this is “just how gamers talk,” while others have accused Kelto of “moralizing the fun out of the game.”

Those arguments have found some support in the usual corners of the internet. But for once, the broader gaming community seems remarkably united on one point: A line was crossed. And it wasn’t even close.

One veteran competitive streamer, who has repeatedly criticized Reforged for deliberately escalating the humiliation of TenMillionBlades, summarized the distinction during a broadcast shortly after Keane’s suspension.

“Before, it was funny. It was basically ‘Yo Mama’ jokes with better graphics. It was what you expected from people who make the game a huge part of their lives. What Keane did was take it out of the realm of jokes and move it dangerously close to something that could be treated as an actual criminal threat. That is never a good reaction.”

That appears to reflect the dominant response even among players who have little sympathy for Reforged.

Mercer and several other Reforged members have spent much of the conflict openly mocking Keane and TenMillionBlades. Reforged members have posted gorilla memes, jokes about the loss of Blade territory, and increasingly elaborate celebrations of Blade military setbacks. Whether that campaign crossed the line from competitive banter into deliberate humiliation is a reasonable subject for debate. Whether it excuses Keane’s post is apparently much less controversial.

It does not.

Williamson more than “Mercer’s girl”

The incident has also drawn considerably more outside attention toward Amy Williamson, whose role in Reforged has grown throughout the conflict.

Keane’s post appeared to frame Williamson primarily through a perceived relationship with Mercer. That description does not accurately represent her role in the ongoing campaign.

Williamson, known in-game as A-Bombadier, has served as one of Reforged’s principal field commanders during the defense of its home territory and has reportedly commanded many of the forces responsible for delaying the TenMillionBlades invasion.

She was also heavily involved in the battle immediately preceding Keane’s post.

In other words, whatever Keane may think of Williamson personally, she is not simply a bystander who became involved because of Mercer.

She is one of the people beating him. That distinction has not gone unnoticed among players following the campaign.

Clips from Williamson’s recent battles have begun circulating outside the normal World of WarMachines community, and several professional players have publicly praised her command decisions during the defensive campaign.

What happens to TenMillionBlades?

At the moment, Kelto’s disciplinary action appears to apply to only Keane individually.

There has been no announcement of sanctions against TenMillionBlades as an organization, nor is there any indication that simply remaining a member of the guild violates any game or forum rule. That may prove to be an increasingly uncomfortable distinction for TenMillionBlades leadership.

Several prominent community figures have already begun asking whether the guild’s officers intend to continue supporting Keane after his suspension. So far, the answer is unclear.

The situation is particularly notable because TenMillionBlades is not a small group centered entirely around one player. The guild contains multiple established battalions, commanders and long-time members with reputations of their own.

Keane’s suspension therefore creates a question that extends beyond whether one player crossed a line.

It asks whether the organization he leads intends to follow him across it.

Reforged goes quiet

Perhaps the most noticeable reaction from Reforged has been the lack of one. That is unusual. Over the course of the Crusade, Reforged members have become increasingly prolific on the Free-Fire Forums. Some of the most widely shared jokes surrounding the conflict originated either directly from Reforged or from other guilds joining in on the joke. Since Keane’s post was removed, that activity has effectively stopped.

No memes.

No victory posts.

No public taunting.

No retaliation against TenMillionBlades members attempting to defend their guild leader.

One Kelto moderator, speaking on background, sounded almost relieved by Reforged’s decision not to answer Keane publicly.

“Thank God they’re not firing back here. Then we’d have a wildfire instead of a blaze.”

The moderator added that the company’s immediate priority was preventing the incident from turning into a broader cycle of threats, retaliation and mass suspensions.

GamingChronicles reached out to all parties involved for comment.

Reforged replied with a brief statement: “Keane’s post speaks for itself. We support Kelto’s action and have nothing further to add regarding his comments. Reforged will not engage TenMillionBlades on the forums. Any further interaction will take place in-game.”

Neither Keane nor any other member of TenMillionBlades leadership responded before this article went to press.

The fighting in Universe at War, however, is continuing.

It was safe to say Reforged had opinions on HeyNon’s post. Most of them were angry, righteously defensive of their guild’s players, and more than a few of those opinions, if posted on the forums, would have earned the posters their own time-outs.

Elias appealed to them NOT to reply. Right now, the Blades were basically immolating themselves on the gasoline-fed pyre of Keane’s comments. Reforged did not need to join them there.

That didn’t sit well with a lot of folks.

Abigail had to basically be talked down from going scorched earth on all the Blades, and Darren specifically. Amy was furious, but she actually became a calming voice for Abby. Of course, Amy was on the verge of striking out herself, but she had learned to keep control of her temper while with Reforged.

They chatted about it after Abigail showed Amy the post she intended to make. Amy had to admit it was impressively vulgar. But she forbade Abby from posting it.

<A-Bombadier> No. Absolutely not. Missy, if you post this on the forum, the folks who want to claim Darren was right will point to it and say, “See, both sides.” I do like you describing <HeyNon> as a “malignant shitgoblin who has his head so far up his ass, he’s continuously re-eating his last meal.” It pretty much sums up MY thoughts on the whole thing.

<MissileToe> But he has to pay. That threat to ThunderRoad was bad enough. But what he said about you...

<A-Bombadier> Yes. He tried to reach for the most vulgar, disgusting, asshole-ic way to put me down. Make me afraid. Make himself seem like the “big, powerful” man and me “the scared, feeble little GURL.” I’m not letting him classify me that way. And I’m not going to let you throw away your forum account, or even your game account, by giving in to your rage on the forums.

<MissileToe> So he gets away with it.

<A-Bombadier> No, he’s not getting away with it. We’re all angry, Abby. But we’re not going to be unfocused or sloppy. We were already winning this stupid invasion after that last battle. Now it’s no longer about making fun of the Blades for being Oh So Serious about the game and using big words and moralistic bullshit about some “Crusade.” It’s pest control. We’re going to run them over. We’re going to kick them out of our worlds. And we’re not going to look back once they’re gone.

<MissileToe> ... is this what being grown up is like? I hate it.

<A-Bombadier> No, blowing up giant war machines in a game isn’t particularly grown-up.

Amy considered that statement for a moment.

<A-Bombadier> Even if I get paid a decent salary for it. But we react like grown-ups. We refuse to play their games. As Martin once said to me about his role before joining Reforged, “It’s poorly optimized.” So, we introduce them to our game.

<MissileToe> Oh?

<A-Bombadier> It’s called “Get the hell out of our portion of the universe and stay the hell away. We find you no longer amusing, and we no longer tolerate you among us.”

<MissileToe> That better be a multiplayer experience.

<A-Bombadier> Oh, you’re in my platoon, Missy. Right behind me. Not because I want to protect you, but I’m going to need some good folks watching my back and making sure no Blade jerks decide to introduce some house rules to the game.

She thought for a moment.

<A-Bombadier> Speaking of that, I need to speak to Adrian about something. Elias too, now that I think about it.

<MissileToe> If I can, I will be there, Cap’n Amy ... damn schoolwork.

<A-Bombadier> Don’t worry, squirt. I’m pretty sure that Elias will schedule this for max attendance. Everyone who’s been involved in this wants to be there when we start ending it.

She finished off the chat with Abby and went ThunderRoad hunting. Thankfully, he was in the communal kitchen, sharing a coffee with Kevin. Adrian looked up and smiled when Amy walked in. Kevin seemed a little less sanguine.

“Hey, Adrian, got a minute? I need to talk to Elias about something regarding our upcoming operations. I want to talk about roles.”

Adrian nodded. “I can do that, Ames. But first, I think Kevin here has something he was talking to me about that he wants to say to you.”

Amy raised an eyebrow and turned to Kevin.

Kevin looked MUCH less like the fun-loving “Chaos-Goblin” the rest of the guild knew him as at that moment.

“Listen, Amy, about the HeyNon thing, I’m sorry about my role in it.”

Amy shot him a confused look. “Your role in it?”

Kevin nodded, all seriousness. “Yeah. It was my thread. That’s where he responded to you and Adrian. We knew the phrase ‘Double Down’ would set him off, because he’s heard it so many times. But I didn’t...”

Amy interrupted. “Whoa ... whoa, Kevin. Slow down. Are you thinking it’s your fault that asshole lost what little remained of his mind?”

Now it was Kevin’s turn to look confused. “Well, I kinda feel like I pushed him into making that response. And he only thought of the threat he ... the thing he said about you because you replied to it.”

Amy laughed. Short, more of a bark than a true chuckle, with a somewhat brittle edge. “Kevin, I replied to it because I thought it was funny.”

She thought for a second, then spoke before Kevin could interrupt again.

“Still do, in fact.”

Kevin looked like someone had mentally punched him in the face for half a second. “Funny? Amy, he...”

Amy shook her head. She was on a roll at this point. “No. You’re not going to think that you were responsible for what he did. Remember all the shit-talking the Blades did when they announced this whole idiocy? They were dancing on the edge of a forum ban the entire time. They didn’t keep it to in-game stuff, Kevin. They tried to get under our skin and insult us as people. We kept our shots to in-game stuff. You didn’t use slurs. No sexist remarks. We made fun of their performance in-game. We pointed out, in loving detail, that their performance was lacking. Not that they were personally bad people. Well, until Darren went under the flaming limbo bar so low a snake looked at him and said, ‘Damn, I’m impressed.’”

Adrian picked up the thread at that point. “Amy’s right. They set the ground rules, and we took the comparative high road. Your comment was only the place where they exploded, not the reason. They were tired of us pointing out their absurdity, their failures of command, their strategy. You were playing by the rules of the game. They just neglected to tell you the rules had changed. If you had known, then you would have known not to go there. But you didn’t know, so you couldn’t know.”

Kevin no longer looked like someone had punched him in the face. Instead, someone had placed his forehead on the tracks and let the 9:30 PM express to Bakersfield run right through it.

“How ... Adrian, that’s a verbal infinite loop. I’m ejecting from thinking about what you just said because I’ll never get out of it otherwise.”

Adrian shook his head. “Okay, bad choice of words. But you understand my meaning, right?”

Kevin sighed. “Yeah. Thanks, guys. It sucked deleting the three or four campaigns I’d already made up, especially the one playing off Elias’s ‘extended warranty on your Crusade’ bit. But it felt like the right thing to do. Especially after Elias’s updated email.”

Amy looked at Adrian. “Updated email?”

Adrian shrugged. “Basic stuff. I’d hand you my phone to read it, but the last time I did that, you started chasing me out the door while threatening grievous bodily harm upon my person. I’m hesitant now.”

Amy mock-glared. “That’s because you totally forgot to mention that Elias’s plan involved him sounding like he’d gone nuts so he could bring the Blades somewhere we could beat them up properly. Hand it over, Mercer.”

Kevin excused himself from the conversation and went to do some necessary, but not necessarily fun, scut work. Reforged had started rebuilding its base network on Terens VI, and someone had to make sure materials were flowing properly. Most of the supply ships had already headed back toward Reforged’s original homeworld to unload the Phase One haul and fill the guild coffers, but enough transports remained for the next mission.

To: All Reforged Guild Members

From: Elias (ReforgedNumbersGuy)

Subject: Update on defense status.

First of all, thank you to everyone who showed up and assisted in the Terens VI battle. We are nearing the end of this invasion, and I know it’s been a hard time for a lot of you. It’s really been appreciated. I said a while back that I wanted people in this guild who wanted to make Reforged shine. You have done that and more.

Unfortunately, the aftermath of the battle, particularly the horrific posts made by the Blades’ guild leader, requires an updated response on several issues.

First of all, the original plan was to auction off a certain WarMAC we had claimed as salvage from Phase One. Considering who that WarMAC belonged to, that’s no longer a good decision. We have decided to delete that WarMAC entirely. Not even salvage it. We do not want anything to do with anything he considered personally his.

I’ve spoken with Marcus and Adrian, and they’ve agreed that instead, we will be making a sizable donation of $50,000 to the Sacramento Area Children’s Center’s Pediatric Oncology Department. We have chosen not to publicize it for multiple reasons. First, I do not want to tie the donation to that person’s vile statements. I don’t want anyone pointing to it and trying to say, “Well, at least something good came out of it.” Also, we do not want the perception that we are “buying forgiveness” for our actions in defending our worlds and our comments on the forums. As far as leadership is concerned, there is nothing to forgive.

However, we would like the moratorium on responding to them to continue indefinitely. Not because we are afraid, or because we are not angry. It’s because they have proven themselves unworthy of any further interaction except removing them from our presence and our territory by all in-game methods possible.

Or, to put it another way: They no longer have any value to us as targets of humor. Every second they carry the tag of the man who thinks threats like that are part of normal discourse does that job for us. Instead, the only way we will deal with them going forward is to drive them away from us.

It may sound a bit “Crusade”-ish, and if it’s a bit too pompous, I apologize. But we’re going to cast them out and tell them we no longer want them around us. Not as an in-game rival or enemy, and certainly not as anything like friends. We’re going to drive them off our worlds, and they can go rebuild somewhere else for all I care. We just will never deal with them again.

Leadership is currently working on a couple of plans to finish this whole situation once and for all. We probably don’t have to ask at this point, but we’d really appreciate the assistance in doing so. Let your platoon and company leaders know your availability. Thanks again.

Elias “ReforgedNumbersGuy” Voss, Adrian “ThunderRoad” Mercer, Amy “A-Bombadier” Williamson.

Amy skipped over the fact that they had added her name to the email even though she hadn’t known about it before it went out. She understood the necessity of making sure the guild’s more active forum posters didn’t start returning fire, giving the Blades a fig leaf of justification for their leader’s comments. But the last paragraph reminded her why she had hunted down Adrian in the first place. She handed the phone back to him and looked at him.

“That’s right ... Um ... Adrian? Would you mind coming with me? I need to speak with Elias about roles for the next mission.”

Adrian nodded. “Sure thing, Amy.”

They made their way over to Elias’s office, where the door was open. Elias only shut the door when he was concentrating on a project, or on a phone call with Marcus.

Elias looked up. “Hey, Amy! How you holding up?”

Amy sighed. “Still angry, but it’s leashed for now. Still looking forward to reducing anything with a Blade tag on it to scrap metal. Good message about that, by the way.”

Elias nodded. “Look, about the terms of the remaining operations ... how do you want to treat this? I mean, it would be easy enough to say, ‘Anyone who’s ever worn a Blades tag is damned in our eyes forevermore... ‘“

Amy shook her head. “Nope. The only person that applies to is Darren. Thank God he’s suspended. If anything would cause the leash to slip, it’s hearing that asshole’s smug voice again. Probably not, though. If he’s close enough that I can hear him, he’s also probably close enough that I can shoot him in-game. At which point he can no longer speak. The rest of them? If they drop the Blades tag as a way to distance themselves from their guild leader’s statement, get the hell off our planets, and don’t come back? Fine. Go away. Have your fun somewhere else. But you’re right. The only value they have while they’re wearing that tag and occupying our planets is as targets.” She took a breath. “That brings me to why I’m here, Elias...”

Elias nodded and steepled his fingers. “Go ahead, Amy. We’re all ears.”

“This is rough for me to say, and probably way out of character, but I want to command the entire force for the next attack to drive the Blades off one of the two remaining planets. Both of them, if you’ll let me and if necessary. I know I haven’t commanded more than a Gorilla Defense force...”

Elias tried to interrupt. “Amy...”

Amy steamrolled him. “And I know I said back when I interviewed that I didn’t like command. It’s just that...”

Elias was desperately trying to intervene at this point.
