Chapter 3

First, about my father, maybe I have been too harsh on him all these years. I knew he was a war hero but a ‘legend’? That guy has led a charmed life. Living with both my moms after his first wife left him. I always found that story hard to believe. Knowing him like I do, I often wondered why he had not tracked them down and confronted them. Why did he so easily accept that they were gone? There were rumors around town that he probably caught them and scalped them! People always said that with a grin on their face. Either they did not believe it, or maybe, they did not want to believe it? Maybe he did catch them. The guy is violent. He is always armed with his .45 and that knife. If the story of Grandma Dove scalping the men who killed her family was true, and it apparently was since that old man said he saw the bodies, then it would not be the first time that knife had been used in that fashion. Secondly, my brother John has always been sort of a mystery to me. He never wanted to do anything but work the farm. Who is like that these days? Everyone needs a college education, right? Our family has money, lots of money. He could have gone to any school he wanted but he chose to marry right out of high school and live and work on a farm? Again, who does that? The work is hard, dirty and sweaty. John is smart, so again why? (to understand John read ‘The Sheepdog’)
Third, there is Dove. Where did she learn to speak the Apache language? I remember the way she is with her dad. Always with him and telling him to go see about this or that. Then he runs out like the house is on fire. They have some type of ‘connection’. That is for sure. Maybe that is why he never would talk about her seeing a doctor. Maybe he knows?
I was still trying to figure it all out when Dove called me. She told me John and she would be arriving the next day at the Albuquerque airport. She asked if they should rent a car or if I wanted to pick them up. I wanted to have some alone time with her and my brother so I said I would pick them up. Three hours in a car would give me plenty of time to get some answers.
About an hour after Dove called one of the twin daughters called me. It seems that Dove had called her father telling of their arrival. They had made arrangements for us all to be taken to the old homestead of our grandma Dove. Then it was decided that the two girls would ride with me to the airport to get Dove and John.
I picked the twins up around noon. Those are two pretty girls! They are identical twins. They even dress alike so there is no way I can tell them apart. One jumps in the front seat with me and the other sits in the back but in the middle. That means that when I look in the rear view mirror I see her face.
The one in the front says that after we pick up John and Dove, we should stop at some restaurant she knows in Albuquerque and eat as we will be late getting back. That is fine with me since I am not that good a cook. One of them asks about the story of my father and his two wives. They have all kinds of questions about that relationship. I try to answer them all honestly. Things like what was it like trying to explain to other children that you had two mothers. Or did it bother you to see them sleeping together, or did my dad seem to favor one above the other. There were a lot of personal questions that I felt a little uncomfortable with but answered anyway.
