Tim---I am the youngest son of Captain Jack. My birth mother is Becky and yes, I am named after her dead brother. He was murdered the night my mom was raped. That story is told in ‘CAPTAIN JACK’. I am considered the bleeding-heart liberal of the family. I went to college and majored in history. American history to be exact. I got a master’s degree and then a PhD with my specialty being the history of the Native American tribes. I also have a teaching certificate and plan on teaching at some university as far away from north Mississippi as I can get.
Like I said I was the bleeding-heart liberal of the family. From a young age I did not like the way my father spoke of the people of Vietnam. He always referred to them as “dinks, slopes or gooks”. When I tried to correct him, he said he had earned the right to call them whatever he wanted and pointed to his eyepatch and his half an ear. If we were at the pool, he would show us his scars where surgeons had dug 17 pieces of shrapnel out of his left side. That shut me up. But I still did not think it was right.
After I had my teaching certificate and my PhD, I started looking for a job. The rule in my family is after you finish school you go to work. If you cannot find a job, you move back home and work on the farm, for my father. Also, the rule is, “No work, no participating in the rewards of the family trust”. That was momma Ginger’s rule. She enforces it!
As I was checking around the country, I found a small Apache reservation in southern New Mexico that was looking for someone to run their entire education system. It consisted of two grade schools (grades 1-8) and one high school. I applied online, then received a call within an hour of sending the application. After about a 15-minute conversation I was asked when I could come for an interview. Within a week I had flown to Albuquerque.
I rented a car at the airport and drove to the reservation. I met with the tribal consul. Thirty minutes later, I had the job! The chief of the tribe offered to help me find a place to live and I accepted.
