The first weekend in the pale-blue room settled over Ryan like a held breath.
Saturday morning he woke on the thick floor futon, the mattress pad already warm from his body. For a moment he simply lay there, listening. No voices through thin walls. No one moving in the next room. Only the soft tick of the building and the faint, steady glow of the router light still visible under his door. The quiet felt different from the empty silence of his old apartment—fuller somehow, like the space itself was resting.
He ordered a cheap lap desk on his phone before he even got up. Something low and stable so he could work from the futon on the days he stayed home. The confirmation email arrived while he was still brushing his teeth.
Ken was already in the kitchen when Ryan emerged, shirtless under an open flannel, silver-and-steel hair slightly damp from a shower. He looked up, gave that easy grin, and reached out as Ryan passed—broad hand settling briefly on the back of Ryan’s neck, thumb brushing once in a small, absent stroke.
“Sleep okay?”
“Yeah. Really quiet.”
Ken’s smile widened a fraction. “Good.”
They moved around each other without awkwardness. Short conversations about coffee, the weather, whether Ryan needed anything from the store. Every time they crossed paths Ken’s hand found him—shoulder, nape, the small of his back—warm, casual, lingering just long enough to register. Ryan found himself leaning into the contact without thinking.
The apartment stayed calm. Ryan worked a few hours on the side table, then moved to the new lap desk when it arrived that afternoon. Camera off. The job asked almost nothing of him beyond clean sentences and meeting the deadline. He liked it that way.
But the quiet had edges.
The screens began flickering more often—laptop mid-paragraph, phone while he scrolled, even the overhead light in the kitchen dipping once while he poured water. The dull pressure behind his eyes deepened into a persistent low-grade headache. It never fully left. Worse in the evenings. Milder when he stepped outside for air. By Sunday night the combination left him foggy and short-tempered. Work took longer. He started shutting the laptop earlier just to lie down.
Every time he settled onto the futon the faint sexual odor rose to meet him—warm, wet, unmistakable. Stronger when he first lay down or shifted against the thick pad. It kept a low, steady horniness simmering under the headache, a background ache that never quite faded. He would feel himself half-hard, the need sitting right there, but the pressure behind his eyes made the idea of touching himself feel exhausting. He turned onto his side, closed his eyes, and went to sleep frustrated more than once.
Monday morning the headache was already waiting.
Ryan rubbed his temples as he sat up slowly on the futon, the thick pad cool against the bare skin of his legs. The pale-blue walls were still dim with early light. He reached for his phone, checked the calendar, and groaned. In-office day. One meeting, unavoidable. He pushed himself upright and walked to the bathroom.
Inside, he pulled off his sleep clothes and dropped them on the floor. The mirror gave him a clear view under the harsh light. He paused, studying the familiar body looking back—broad shoulders, firm chest, flat stomach with the faint remaining lines of definition, soft patches of hair across his chest and down the center of his belly. He ran his fingers over the skin, then lower, closing his hand around the morning chub that had been half-hard since he woke. A slow stroke, then another—
The overhead light flickered hard.
Pain spiked behind his eyes. He sucked in a breath, let go, and turned the shower on full. Hot water beat against the back of his neck and shoulders until the worst of the pressure eased to its usual dull ache. He stayed longer than he needed to, forehead against the cool tile, before stepping out, drying off, and pulling on a plain white tee and loose boxer shorts.
In the kitchen he moved on autopilot—coffee, water—then leaned against the counter and pressed the heels of both hands to his temples.
Ken’s voice came from the doorway, low and even.
“Good mornin’ ... oh. You look rough.”
Ryan dropped his hands and tried for a shrug. “Headaches. Since Friday night, pretty much. Right behind my eyes. It’s making weird things happen. Screens keep flickering—laptop, phone, even the lights. Bright ones hurt.” He hesitated. “I think it’s just leftover stress. All my ex-friends bailing on the lease at once, the whole almost-homeless thing. It’s over, but I don’t think I’ve actually gotten past it yet.”
Ken didn’t answer right away. He crossed the kitchen and stopped behind Ryan. Broad hands settled on his shoulders—warm, firm, the calloused palms spreading heat through the thin fabric of the tee.
“Here,” Ken murmured, voice close enough that Ryan felt the words against the back of his neck. “Just breathe.”
His thumbs found the tight muscles at the base of Ryan’s skull and began working in slow, deliberate circles. The pressure was measured, knowing. Ryan’s breath caught, then loosened. Almost without deciding to, he let his weight tip backward a fraction, spine softening. The solid wall of Ken’s chest was suddenly right there if he leaned any further.
The massage moved upward, fingers sliding into damp hair, cradling his head. Then down again—along the sides of his neck, lingering over the sensitive cords, across the tops of his shoulders. Each pass sank deeper. Heat bloomed under Ken’s hands and spread outward in slow waves.
