Three deaths in one semester.

Emily. Daniel. Elena. Three cunt faces. Three bodies. Three families were destroyed.

I was exhausted, reader. I was so exhausted.

“Darcy,” Zoe said, “you need to rest.”

“I can’t rest.” I shook my head. “There’s too much to do.”

“There’s always too much to do.” She touched my face. “But you can’t help anyone if you’re dead on your feet.”

She was right, reader. She was always right.

Fall break was coming.

A week off from classes. A week away from the boxes. A week away from the deaths.

“Let’s go to Texas,” Zoe said. “Let’s see my family.”

“Texas?”

“Five days. Two days driving. A week away from all this.”

I thought about it, reader. I thought about the farm. The chickens. The fields. The peace.

“Okay,” I said. “Let’s go.”

We planned the trip together.

No clothes. No luggage. Just us. That was our pact. Our promise. Whenever we were together, we were naked.

“Five days in Texas,” I said. “Two days driving. Seven days away.”

“Seven days away from the boxes.” Zoe smiled. “Seven days away from the deaths.”

I thought about the deaths, reader. I thought about Emily’s blue cunt face. Daniel’s empty eyes. Elena’s broken body.

“I can’t stop thinking about them,” I said.

“Don’t.” Zoe touched my face. “Think about us. Think about the future.”

We packed nothing.

No clothes. No luggage. Just us.

“I can’t believe we’re doing this,” I said.

“I can.” Zoe smiled. “We’ve been through so much. We deserve a break.”

“Deserve?”

“Deserve.” She kissed me. “We deserve to be happy.”

I thought about that, reader. I thought about happiness.

“Okay,” I said. “Let’s go find it.”

We talked about the deaths on the drive.

Emily. Daniel. Elena.

“I can’t stop thinking about them,” I admitted.

“I know.” Zoe nodded. “I can’t stop thinking about them either.”

“How do you do it?” I asked. “How do you accept it?”

“I don’t accept it.” She shook her head. “I just ... I try to focus on living.”

She looked at me, reader. Her ocean-green eyes were full of love.

“You’re living,” she said. “I’m living. That’s all that matters.”

We drove through the desert.

Naked, as always. Unashamed, as always.

The landscape was different now. The desert was giving way to green. The fields were appearing. The farmhouses were dotting the horizon.

“Almost there,” Zoe said.

“Almost where?”

“Almost home.”

I felt a flutter of nervousness, reader. I was going to see her family again. The people who’d accepted me. The people who’d loved me.

“Are they going to be okay with...” I gestured to our bodies. “With this?”

“They’re always okay with this.” She smiled. “They’re naked too.”

We arrived at the farmhouse as the sun was setting.

The white house. The wrap-around porch. The chickens in the yard. The dog barked.

Anne came running out. She was naked, like always.

“Zoe!” She hugged her daughter. “You’re home!”

“We’re home,” Zoe said.

Anne looked at me. Her eyes were warm.

“Darcy,” she said. “Welcome back.”

“Thank you, ma’am.”

“Naked.” She smiled. “I like you more and more.”

The family welcomed us warmly.

Walter was cooking. Yolanda was playing with her children. Wendy was studying at the kitchen table.

“Darcy!” Wendy jumped up. “You’re back!”

“I’m back.”

“Did you bring Zoe’s cunt face?”

I blinked, reader. I didn’t know what to say.

“Wendy,” Anne said. “That’s rude.”

“It’s not rude. It’s honest.” Wendy shrugged. “She’s a cunt face. That’s what she is.”

I looked at Zoe. She was smiling.

“She’s right,” Zoe said. “I am a cunt face. And I’m proud of it.”

Dinner was a feast.

Steak and potatoes and fresh vegetables from the garden. Everyone was naked. Everyone was accepting.

“Tell us about the semester,” Walter said. “Tell us about the deaths.”

I hesitated, reader. I didn’t want to talk about it.

“There have been three,” I said finally. “Emily. Daniel. Elena.”

“And Zoe?” Anne asked. “How is Zoe?”

“She’s fine.” I took her hand. “She’s survived.”

“Survived,” Walter repeated. “That’s all we can ask for.”

We told them about the changes to the program.

“More tape,” I said. “Stronger straps. No padding. After the deaths, they changed everything.”

Anne looked at me. “And Zoe?”

“She’s still in the boxes. She’s still volunteering.”

“Does she want to stay?”

I looked at Zoe. Her face was calm. Serene.

“Yes,” she said. “I want to stay.”

The room was silent, reader. No one spoke.

“Zoe,” Walter said, “we support you. Whatever you choose.”

Anne pulled me aside after dinner.

“Darcy,” she said, “I need to talk to you.”

“About what?”

“About the future.” She took my hand. “About what comes next.”

I listened, reader. I listened to everything she said.

“You love her,” Anne said. “I can see it in your eyes.”

“Yes,” I said. “I love her more than anything.”

“Then you need to think about what happens when the semester ends. When the deaths become too much.”
