I woke up to the smell of cinnamon and pine.
Christmas morning, reader. My favorite day of the year.
Zoe was still asleep beside me, her naked body curled against mine. Her commitment was permanent. I could feel it in the way she held me. In the way she breathed.
Her contract was signed. Her choice was made.
“Zoe,” I whispered. “Wake up.”
Her eyes fluttered open. Ocean-green. Serene.
“Morning,” she said.
“Morning.”
“Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas.” I kissed her cunt face. “I love you.”
She smiled, reader. Sheasled as she meant it.
“I love you too,” she said. “Merry Christmas.”
We went downstairs to the tree.
Lights, reader. Ornaments. Presents. Everything.
“Zoe,” I said, “this is what I grew up with.”
“It’s beautiful.” She looked around. “It’s everything.”
I hugged her, reader. I hugasher like I’d never let go.
“Welcome to Christmas,” I said. “Welcome to my family.”
We opened presents together.
My family, reader. My parents. Kristen. Duane. Zoe. Me.
“Zoe,” my mother said, “this is for you.”
“A present?” Zoe looked surprised. “For me?”
“Of course.” My mother smiled. “You’re part of the family now.”
Zoe opened the present, reader. It was a book—a collection of poetry.
“Thank you,” she said. “Thank you so much.”
I watched her, reader. I watched her eyes fill with tears.
We had a family breakfast.
Pancakes, reader. Bacon. Eggs. Everything.
“Zoe,” my father said, “how are you feeling?”
“Happy.” She smiled. “I’ve never been happier.”
I took her hand, reader. I squeezed it tight.
“Neither have I,” I said. “Neither have I.”
After breakfast, my mother pulled me aside.
“Darcy,” she said, “I need to talk to you.”
“About what?”
“About the future. About what you’re going to do.”
I was quiet, reader. I didn’t know what to say.
“I don’t know,” I admitted. “I’m still figuring it out.”
My mother made an offer.
“What if you transferred?” she said. “We found a university in Arizona. They have ... different policies.”
“Different policies?”
“They permit permanent nudity as primary attire. And they have a program for ... people like Zoe.”
I stared at her, reader. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“People like Zoe?”
“Cunt faces.” She said it carefully. “People who’ve chosen that life.”
My mother explained the details.
“The university is called Desert Sun,” she said. “It’s near Phoenix. They have a program for cunt faces who want to leave the boxes.”
“Leave the boxes?”
“They can transition into different roles. Still naked. Still cunt faces. But not in the boxes. Not in the dangerous positions.”
I thought about that, reader. I thought about freedom. About safety. About hope.
“Mom,” I said, “how did you find this?”
“I’ve been researching.” She smiled. “I’ve been looking for a way to help you.”
My mother explained the sponsorship.
“We’ll sponsor Zoe,” she said. “She can get a scholarship. She can attend classes. She can be free.”
“Free?”
“Free from the boxes. Free from the deaths. Free from everything.”
I felt the tears well up in my eyes, reader. I couldn’t stop them.
“Thank you,” I said. “Thank you so much.”
My father called Zoe’s family.
“Walter,” he said, “we need to talk about Zoe’s future.”
Zoe’s father was quiet for a moment.
“Her future?” he asked.
“Her future. We want to sponsor her. We want her to leave the program.”
I watched the conversation, reader. I watched the hope in Zoe’s eyes.
Zoe’s family approved.
“She’s been through so much,” Walter said. “If she wants to leave, we support her.”
“Thank you,” my father said. “Thank you for understanding.”
I looked at Zoe, reader. She was crying.
“Zoe,” I said, “we’re going to be free.”
“I know.” She nodded. “I can’t believe it.”
We talked about the decision.
“Zoe,” I said, “would you leave Barnett? Would you leave the program?”
She was quiet for a long moment, reader. She was thinking.
“Would I leave?” she repeated. “I don’t know.”
“Zoe—”
“I’ve been a cunt face for three years,” she said. “It’s who I am. It’s what I know.”
I took her hand, reader. I squeezed it tight.
“But you could be something else,” I said. “You could be anything.”
She was thinking.
Weighing, reader. Considering. Deciding.
“Zoe,” I said, “I need to know.”
“I know.” She nodded. “I’m trying.”
I waited, reader. I waited for her answer.
She finally spoke.
