Madeleine Velasquez was different now.

I’d known her since the first week of classes, reader. She’d been quiet then. Haunted. Broken.

But she wasn’t the same person anymore.

She was a stronger reader. More determined. More resilient.

“Darcy,” she said, “I need to talk to you.”

“About what?”

“About the program. About my family. About everything.”

I sat down across from her, reader. I looked into her eyes.

“Madeleine,” I said, “you’ve changed.”

Madeleine was in the boxes frequently now.

She was volunteering more hours. She was surrendering more completely.

“Madeleine,” I said, “you’re in the boxes almost every day.”

“I know.” She smiled. “It’s the only place I feel safe.”

“Safe?”

“Safe from my family. Safe from my past. Safe from everything.”

I thought about that, reader. I thought about safety. About surrender. About freedom.

The boxes were healing her.

“When I’m in the box,” she said, “I don’t have to think. I don’t have to remember. I just have to ... be.”

“Be what?”

“Be a cunt face.” She touched her face. “Be nothing but a face in a box. Be used. Be ridden. Be free.”

I looked at her, reader. I saw the peace in her eyes.

“Madeleine,” I said, “you’re so brave.”

“I’m not brave.” She shook her head. “I’m just ... accepting.”

Our friendship was unshakeable.

We’d been through so much together, reader. The deaths. The grief. The guilt.

“Darcy,” she said, “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“You’d survive.” I took her hand. “You’re stronger than you know.”

“I don’t feel strong.”

“Strength isn’t about feeling strong.” I smiled. “It’s about keeping going even when you feel weak.”

Madeleine refused to break.

Her family had rejected her. Her parents had tried to drag her away. But she was still here. Still standing.

“They can’t break me,” she said. “They’ve tried. But they can’t.”

“They can’t break you,” I agreed.

“Because I’m not broken.” She touched her cunt face. “I’m a cunt face. I’m a Resident. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.”

Madeleine’s family returned.

They’d been escorted off campus before, reader. They’d been dragged away by security.

But they were back. They were determined.

“Madeleine!” her father shouted. “Madeleine, come out!”

I watched them from the window, reader. I watched their rage. Their desperation.

“Madeleine,” I said, “they’re here.”

“I know.” Her voice was calm. “I heard them.”

We went outside together.

“Mr. Velasquez,” I said, “you need to leave.”

“Leave?” He laughed. “My daughter is in there. My daughter is being abused.”

“She’s not being abused. She’s a volunteer. She chose this life.”

“She signed the waivers. That’s not the same as choosing.”

I stepped forward, reader. I stepped between them.

“She’s an adult,” I said. “She can make her own choices. And she’s chosen to stay.”

Her father lunged at me.

His face was red. His eyes were wild. His hands were reaching for my throat.

Security intervened. They dragged him away. They escorted her parents off campus.

Afterward, Madeleine collapsed in my arms.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t be.” I held her. “You’re family now. We protect each other.”

Madeleine’s family was gone.

They’d been escorted off campus for good, reader. They were never coming back.

“I’m alone now,” she said. “I’m completely alone.”

“You’re not alone.” I took her hand. “You have me. You have Zoe. You have all of us.”

She cried, reader. She cried as she’d never stopped.

Madeleine gave a speech.

“My name is Madeleine Velasquez,” she said. “And I’m a volunteer.”

I watched her, reader. I watched her strength. Her courage.

“I joined this sorority because I wanted to heal. I’d been broken by my family. Broken by the people who were supposed to protect me.”

She looked at the crowd, reader. Her eyes were fierce.

“The boxes—they’re not punishment. They’re liberation. For the first time, I control who touches me. For the first time, I’m free.”

The audience was silent, reader. No one spoke.

The audience was moved.

People were crying, reader. They were holding each other. They were understanding.

“I’m not a victim,” Madeleine continued. “I’m a volunteer. And no one—not my parents, not the media, not anyone—can take that from me.”

I was crying, reader. I was so proud of her.

Madeleine was courageous.

She’d faced her family. She’d faced the media. She’d faced everything.

“Madeleine,” I said, “you’re amazing.”

“I’m not amazing.” She shook her head. “I’m just surviving.”

“Surviving is amazing.” I hugged her. “Surviving is everything.”

Our support network was growing.

Jennifer. April. Madeleine. Sienna. Marcus. Me. We were a family. A weird, broken, beautiful family.

“Madeleine,” Jennifer said, “you were incredible.”

“I was scared,” Madeleine admitted.

“We’re all scared.” Jennifer touched her face. “But we’re here. We’re together.”

I looked around the room, reader. I saw the love. The support. The hope.

Mrs. Velasquez was obsessed.

She’d lost two daughters now, reader. Elena was dead. Madeleine had rejected her.

“I need to see her,” Mrs. Velasquez said. “I need to see Madeleine.”

“She doesn’t want to see you,” the administrator said.

“I don’t care.” Mrs. Velasquez shook her head. “I need to understand.”

I watched her, reader. I watched her grief. Her pain. Her obsession.

Mrs. Velasquez came to the pool area.

She watched the sessions. She watched the cunt faces. She watched the boxes.

“Mrs. Velasquez,” I said, “you shouldn’t be here.”

“I need to understand.” Her voice was hollow. “I need to know why they chose this.”

I looked at her, reader. I saw the grief in her eyes.

“They chose freedom,” I said. “They chose liberation.”

Mrs. Velasquez was fixated on the boxes.

She watched the cunt faces. She watched the rides. She watched the surrender.

“I don’t understand,” she said. “I don’t understand how anyone could choose this.”
