Jennifer Campbell was different now.
I’d known her since the first day of orientation, reader. She’d been the one who recruited me. The one who’d pushed me onto Elena’s cunt face. The one who’d shown me the boxes.
But she wasn’t the same person anymore.
She was a softer reader. More open. More vulnerable.
“Darcy,” she said, “we need to talk.”
“About what?”
“About the program. About the changes. About everything.”
I sat down across from her, reader. I looked into her eyes.
“Jennifer,” I said, “what happened to you?”
Jennifer told me her story.
“I used to be so detached,” she said. “I used to recruit people without caring about the consequences. I used to watch them sign the waivers and walk away.”
“And now?”
“Now I care.” She shook her head. “Now I see the cunt faces as people. As real people with real lives.”
I thought about that, reader. I thought about my own transformation.
“Elena changed me,” she said. “When she died, something broke inside me.”
“Broke?”
“I realized that I was part of it. I was part of the machine that killed her.” She looked at me. “And I couldn’t live with that anymore.”
We talked for hours.
“Jennifer,” I said, “you’re not the same person who recruited me.”
“I know.” She nodded. “I’m not proud of who I was.”
“But you’ve changed. You’ve grown.”
“Because I had to.” She touched my hand. “Because I couldn’t keep pretending that what we were doing was okay.”
I thought about that, reader. I thought about pretending. About denial. About truth.
Our rivalry had turned into friendship.
We’d been competitors, reader. We’d been rivals. But now we were allies.
“I never thought I’d say this,” Jennifer said, “but I’m glad you’re here.”
“Glad?”
“Glad I have someone who understands.” She smiled. “Glad I’m not alone.”
I took her hand, reader. I squeezed it tight.
“You’re not alone,” I said. “You’ll never be alone.”
We shared our experiences.
The deaths. The grief. The guilt.
“I still think about Emily,” Jennifer said. “Her blue cunt face. Her empty eyes.”
“I think about her too.” I nodded. “I think about all of them.”
“Daniel. Elena. Kevin.”
We were quiet for a moment, reader. We were both remembering.
“How do you do it?” Jennifer asked. “How do you keep going?”
I thought about that, reader. I thought about Zoe.
“Because I have to,” I said. “Because I can’t stop.”
Jennifer had become a frequent participant.
She was in the boxes regularly now. She was being ridden. She was surrendering.
“Jennifer,” I said, “you’re volunteering?”
“I’m a cunt face now.” She smiled. “I’m one of them.”
I looked at her, reader. I saw the changes in her body. The marks. The scars.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
“I’ve never been better.” She touched her cunt face. “For the first time, I understand.”
Jennifer was invested now.
She wasn’t just a recruiter anymore. She was a participant. A volunteer. A cunt face.
“I used to think the cunt faces were weak,” she said. “I used to think they were victims.”
“And now?”
“Now I know they’re the strongest people I’ve ever met.” She shook her head. “It takes more courage to surrender than to fight.”
I thought about that, reader. I thought about surrender. About courage. About strength.
Jennifer spoke for the Residents.
She gave speeches. She wrote articles. She advocated for safety.
“The cunt faces aren’t victims,” she said. “They’re volunteers. They chose this life. But that doesn’t mean they should die.”
I watched her, reader. I watched her passion. Her commitment.
“Jennifer,” I said, “you’re amazing.”
“I’m trying.” She smiled. “I’m trying to make things right.”
Jennifer’s relationship with Derek Chen was complicated.
He was the son of Dr. Chen, the professor. He was analytical. Methodical. Skeptical.
“She’s changed,” Derek said. “Jennifer’s changed.”
“I know.” I nodded. “She’s not the same person.”
“Is that a good thing?”
I thought about it, reader. I thought about change. About growth. About transformation.
“I think so,” I said. “I think it’s a very good thing.”
Derek told me his story.
“I grew up in this world,” he said. “My father was a professor. He taught the students who became sponsors.”
“Your father was Dr. Chen?”
“Yes. He was one of the first faculty advisors. He helped create the program.”
I thought about that, reader. I thought about the program’s origins.
“Did you always support it?” I asked.
“No.” He shook his head. “I was skeptical. I questioned it. I thought it was wrong.”
“And now?”
“Now I see the Residents’ agency.” He looked at me. “Now I see that it’s their choice.”
Derek had been skeptical at first.
“I thought the cunt faces were victims,” he said. “I thought they were being exploited.”
“But you changed your mind?”
“I saw them choose. I saw them surrender.” He shook his head. “I saw them find freedom in the boxes.”
I thought about that, reader. I thought about freedom. About choice. About surrender.
Derek had accepted the program.
“It’s not for everyone,” he said. “But for the ones who choose it, it’s liberation.”
“Liberation?”
“Liberation from the self. From the ego. From the need to control.” He smiled. “That’s what the boxes offer.”
I looked at him, reader. I saw the understanding in his eyes.
“You get it,” I said. “You really get it.”
Jennifer and Derek were a power couple.
