The recovery room was quiet.
Too quiet, reader. The kind of quiet that settles over a place after something permanent has been decided.
Zoe was sitting on the bed. Her eyes were calm. Ocean-green. Serene.
“Darcy,” she whispered. “You’re still here.”
“I’m not going anywhere.”
I held her hand, reader. I held it tight.
“Did you sleep?” she asked.
“No.”
“Darcy—”
“I couldn’t.” I shook my head. “I couldn’t leave you.”
She squeezed my hand, reader. She squeezed it as she meant it.
“I’m okay,” she said. “The contracts are signed. The commitment is made. I’m okay.”
The mass commitment ceremony was in the common room.
All current occupants were signing new contracts. All the cunt faces. All the Residents.
Marcus signed first. Then Sienna. The lifers. The novices. The students.
I walked through the room, reader. I saw the determined faces. The unwavering eyes.
“This is what they wanted,” the administrator said. “This is what they chose.”
I nodded, reader. I didn’t know what else to do.
The administrators were efficient.
Professional. Detached. They didn’t see cunt faces. They saw contracts. Signatures. Commitments.
“Next,” the administrator said. “Bed four.”
A Resident was wheeled in. She was young. Maybe twenty. Her hands were trembling.
“It’s okay,” I said. “It’s going to be okay.”
She looked at me. Her eyes were scared.
“Are you a cunt face?” she asked.
“No.” I shook my head. “I’m a sponsor. I’m Darcy.”
“Darcy.” She nodded. “I’ve heard about you.”
I didn’t know what to say, reader. I just held her hand.
I watched her sign.
I shouldn’t have watched, reader. I should have looked away.
But I couldn’t. I couldn’t stop watching.
The administrator placed the contract in front of her. She picked up the pen.
“Ready?” the administrator asked.
“Yes.” Her voice was barely a whisper.
She signed her name, reader. Permanent commitment. No exit.
I held her hand. I held it tight.
“You’re doing great,” I whispered. “You’re doing so great.”
Zoe was recovering.
Her contracts were signed. Her commitment was made. She was permanent.
“I feel different,” she said.
“Different how?”
“Like I’m permanent now. Like I can’t leave.” She touched her chest. “Like I’m stuck.”
I took her hand, reader. I squeezed it tight.
“You’re not stuck,” I said. “You’re free. You’re always free.”
“Free?” She laughed. “I’ve signed away my freedom. I’m never going to be free.”
We talked about the contracts.
“Zoe,” I said, “do you regret it?”
“Regret what?”
“The contracts. The commitment. All of it.”
She was quiet for a long moment, reader. She was thinking.
“No,” she said finally. “I don’t regret it. This is who I am. This is what I chose.”
“But the permanence—”
“Is what I wanted.” She touched my face. “I wanted to be yours forever. Now I am.”
I hugged her.
Carefully, reader. Gently. I didn’t want to hurt her.
“I love you,” I said.
“I know.” She kissed me. “I love you too.”
April Huston called a meeting.
“The commitment contracts are complete,” she said. “All current occupants have signed.”
There was a murmur in the room. Some were relieved. Some were horrified.
“Enhanced protocols for the boxes,” April continued. “Stronger locks. Tighter seals. But zero safety measures for occupants.”
“What about emergency releases?” someone asked.
“There are none.” April’s voice was cold. “The cunt faces have chosen this life. They’ve committed completely.”
I looked at Zoe, reader. Her face was calm.
The Residents accepted the new reality.
“We knew what we were signing up for,” Marcus said. “We knew the risks.”
“The contracts—”
“Are part of the risks.” He shrugged. “We’re committed, Darcy. We’ve given everything.”
I looked around the room, reader. I saw the determined faces.
“You’re all so brave,” I said.
“No.” He shook his head. “We’re not brave. We’re just ... accepting.”
The new normal was strange.
The boxes were the same. The cunt faces were the same. But everything was different.
I watched Zoe get into her box. I watched her sign her name. I watched her commitment.
“Ready?” I asked.
“Ready.” She smiled. “Always ready.”
I sealed her in, reader. I checked the locks. I checked the seals. I checked everything.
The first session after the contracts was intense.
Zoe was under me. Her cunt face was under me. I was riding her.
“I can feel it,” she gasped. “The commitment. The permanence.”
“Is it painful?”
“It’s...” She paused. “It’s good. It’s really good.”
I rode her, reader. I rode her as I’d never ride anyone else.
Afterward, we lay in bed.
“Zoe,” I said, “the contracts. Do you ever think about them?”
“Sometimes.” She touched her chest. “But it’s a good feeling. A real feeling.”
“Real?”
“Real.” She smiled. “Like I’m truly here. Truly committed.”
I thought about that, reader. I thought about commitment. About permanence. About being trapped.
Some Residents left.
They couldn’t accept the contracts, reader. They couldn’t accept the permanence.
“They’re leaving?” I asked.
“Some of them,” Sienna said. “They can’t handle it.”
“But they signed the contracts.”
“Signing the contracts doesn’t mean accepting the permanence.” She shrugged. “They’re free to leave.”
I thought about that, reader. I thought about freedom. About choice.
Others joined.
